The WRC is the FIA World Rally Championship, a tough motorsport using rally cars on real roads around the world. Watch the best rally drivers battle on gravel and asphalt roads with mud, rain, dust, ice and heat! Watch high speed action as the rally drivers power slide and drift round narrow corners, go flat out over a big jump or through a watersplash, handbrake turn round a hairpin, survive a big moment, or have a massive crash! Rally requires maximum attack and careful tactics to become world rally champion.
Each rally has timed sections called special stages, on closed roads. Drivers complete these stages as quickly as possible. A co-driver reads pace notes that explain the hazards ahead. Rally drivers use the same rally car to travel to each stage on public roads, following normal traffic regulations. The crew which completes all the stages in the shortest time is the rally winner. Championship points are won using the same scoring system as Formula 1. The championship is administered by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body.
Over 30 countries have hosted WRC rallies. Rally Monte Carlo, Rally Argentina, Rally Finland, Rally Portugal, Tour de Corse on Corsica, France, Rally Sardegna on Sardinia, Italy, Safari Rally in Kenya, Acropolis Rally in Greece, Rally New Zealand, Rally Australia, Rally Japan, Rally GB, Rally Catalunya, Rallye Deutschland, Rally Mexico and many more.
Some of the world's greatest drivers have won the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, like Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz, Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Petter Solberg, Ott Tänak. The list of world rally champions includes many Finnish rally drivers like Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen, Ari Vatanen, Marcus Grönholm, Hannu Mikkola. French drivers have had success with Sébastien Ogier, and 9 times world champion Sébastien Loeb. Famous drivers from other motorsports have come to try rally driving like Ken Block from Rallycross, and Robert Kubica and Kimi Räikkönen from F1.
Car companies compete for the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers awarded to the most successful WRC constructor. Winners include Citroen, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Peugeot. Ford have had success with the Ford Escort, Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta when the M-Sport team won in 2017.
The 1980's featured the iconic Group B rally cars like the Lancia 037 and Delta S4, Peugeot 205 T16, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200 and Audi Quattro.
Japan dominated the 1990s with the Mitsubishi Lancer, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Celica and Toyota Corolla. Toyota returned to the WRC in 2017 with the Toyota Yaris WRC, winning in 2018. Hyundai won in 2019 and 2020 with the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. Find out about the latest winners and champions at www.wrc.com

Why do you have a Shakedown stage before the rally starts?
@f1racing_24
@f1racing_24 3 года назад
It's primarily meant to help the drivers have a feel of the rally stages at competitive pace and hence fine-tune the settings on their cars for the actual competitive stages
@varski76
@varski76 3 года назад
For drivers to test the setups for the cars and for many this is the first time on the surface they are going to drive for the weekend not all have the resources to have a proper test days. So that is the reason to make sure everything is in order for the upcoming rally (setup and the overall cars condition).
@zwjna
@zwjna 3 года назад
@@f1racing_24 Well, not so fine-tunning, since all the stages need special, often very different setups. I remember a team principal saying that "shakedown is useless nowadays" (he wanted the qualy format back, if I recall correctly, which indeed would also work to get a grip of the rally's conditions.)

It's a shakedown run. No need to drive full out, there's no clock. They do it to get a feel for the cars setup and the conditions of the stage. *there is a clock, I was wrong in saying that.

He's doing Scandinavian flicks for the most part. Sometimes the difference in grip from one side of the car to the other could be making the car unstable, and ultimately that's also the driver's driving style - useful to feel the grip below, for example.

@@xXturbo86Xx Only thing you have to do , is reading the opinion of..... Walter Rorl , Ari Vatanen , Carlos Sainz , Harry Selstrom , Jean Todt , Jean Ragnioti , Tommy Makinen , Roger Clark , Hannou Mikola , and some co-drivers like David Richarts , Nicky Grist , Dereck Ringer , L.Moya , Gunar Palm , J.Vial , H. Lindon and many many others..... It is obvious my friend that you have not ever "followed" the "REAL Acropolis" rally of that era... When the rally was crossing the whole Greek "mountains" for 4 days AND nights(have you ever seen a night SS??) , the services were taking place at the end of some SS's , and the mechanics of some teams managed to change 4 shock absorders , a complete rear suspention "Atlas"(Ford Escort MK II) , and front and rear braking system , in 22' (Vatanen - Richards) !!!!... Note that at that era , most of the SS surface was without "make-up" and the gravel was real gravel with stones like a kids head.... Now all "rallies" are just "rally sprints" just for money... Participations ?... Over 140.. Final in time list ?... 15 , 28 , 32 !!!!... "Factory teams" ?... Over 20 , and not 2(Toyota & Hyunday with a "smell" of Ford).... Which one do you prefere my friend ??... ACROPOLIS RALLY , or so called , "Acropolis Rally Sprint" ???... And the MOST important.. SPECTATORS ???.... About 15 to 20+ THOUSAND people each SS !!!... Even if it was 3.30 after midnight !!!!.... My best Regards my friend... From an ex co-driver 72 yo now !!!!... W.R.C , F.I.A... Do you "read me"?????... Thank you....
