Dad, infact this is said to be based on true story. This was a clash between the vaishnavites (who worship narayana) and the saivites(who worship Lord shiva) . The king chola at a point makes all the people to follow and removes all the identity of vaishnavism (the idol here) . Since nambi (kamal's character) denies to follow, he is tied to his idol and thrown into the ocean.
Hi Ken, In this movie Kamal Hassan plays 10 different major roles. The plot in the above scene is : During the 12th century , there used to be conflicts between who is the supreme God, Shiva or Vishnu between Shavites(followers of Shiva) and Vaishnavites(followers of Vishnu ). Once the Shaivates became the rulers, they are trying to remove the Vishnu idols from the temples to prove their dislike towards Vishnu. However Kamal Hassan is a Vaishnavite in this movie and protests against the idol of Lord Vishnu being removed. Upon request from his wife, the king commands Kamal Hassan to praise Lord Shiva to be let free. However Kamal Hassan praises Lord Vishnu instead. The frustrated King command his men to drown him in the ocean along with the Idol. And no , Kamal Hassan doesn't get saved. He dies by drowning.

This scene is based on a true story which happened long back. Those days in India there were conflicts between Two group of People. One was those whose were worshipping Lord Shiva and the other was those who were worshipping Lord Vishnu. In this part, The King Chola and Rangarajan belonged to Lord Shiva side and Lord Vishnu side respectively. As king he wanted to show his power and make the other group to follow Lord Shiva. So he tried to take the Lord Vishnu idol out of temple which might be considered as a shame for Lord Vishnu Sided people. Rangarajan tried to save that. But he failed as a single man. King had an idea to drown the Idol into ocean. Before that he wanted Rangarajan to say the slogans of Lord Shiva. If Rangarajan said the slogans of Lord Shiva, his life would be spared. Else he would be tied with the idol which was going to be drowning in few minutes. Om namo Narayana - Lord Vishnu's Slogan. Om nama Shivaya - Lord Shiva's slogan. When Rangarajan took his breathe to say the slogan, everyone including the king were expecting the Lord Shiva's slogan. But Rangarajan didn't give up on his God and Shouted the Lord Vishnu's Slogan. The scene you watched is opening sequence of the movie. It portrays the historical clash between two sects of Hinduism, namely Siavam and Vainavam. Saivam celebrates Lord Shiva as supreme and while Vainavam, Lord Vishnu. The one on throne above the elephant is a Chola King, a fiery follower of Lord Shiva, has just conquered the region and removes idol of Lord Vishnu from the temple probably in order to replace it with a Shiav Lingam. (Think about the crusade wars between Spanish and Arabs, and how they conquered and constructed churches and mosques to incorporate their supremacy. Same is going on here). Kamal here opposes the progressings, while the Chola King, heeding to kamal wife's plea, offers him to live if he accepts Lord Shiva as one god, which he eventually refuses and has been ordered to death. The small boy, Kamal's son, who circles Kamal with a pot filled with water, is a ritual performed to the deceased before the body is cremated. Many opposed to the opening scene of this movie, may be many didn't want to realize how harsh the history has been. The scene you watched had several minutes cut out, in order to have a smooth release in theaters.
Hi, This actually is the initial part of the entire movie. This part of the movie comes as part of the story. The main story line of this movie is that a research scientist discovers a bio weapon which if released out, can kill almost half of the world as it's an air bourne synthetic virus. After discovering this, the scientist finds out an ex-CIA Agent gone rogue and is trying to steal this and sell to a black market. To save the virus from ending up into wrong hands, the scientist himself steals it. While escaping from the lab, he gets chased into an airport where he's left with no option but to leave it inside a courier cargo which is heading to India. So he somehow manages to come to India and tries to find the cargo before it gets dispatched. The reason being, the virus if exposed to heat, can start leaking. So it always had to be kept in cold condition. The whole movie travels around the hero Kamal Haasan trying to save the virus while the villain Keeps chasing them. The reason for this historic episode will be revealed in climax. I do not want to be spoiling it for you. So u better watch the whole movie. BTW, the movie name Dasavatharam means 10 character/ lives of lord Krishna. The movie was named as it is because kamal haasan had acted in 10different characters in the movie. 1) Rangarajan nambi(12th century character) 2) scientist 3) ex-CIA agent 4) George Bush 5) old lady 6) japanese guy 7) the tall guy 8) the investigating officer 9) the dark man(social activist) 10) pop singer And to explain this scene: The whole sequence is pictured to be happening in 12th century. During this time there were 2major group of people and beliefs. 1 who worships lord Shiva and the other group worshiping lord Narayana or Krishna. In the scene, the king of the country who is a devotee of lord Shiva orders his gaurds to demolish all the temples of lord Krishna within his empire inorder to make the people worship only Shiva. But, the Rangarajan Nambi(the lead care taker of that temple and a great devotee of lord Narayana/Krishna tries to fight the soldiers. But eventually outnumbered by the king's gaurds, he gets caught. In the conversation happening between himself and the king... The king commands the Rangarajan to utter the praising words for lord Shiva in order to let down the beliefs of Rangarajan. His wife, family and his child everyone begs him to just say the words and save his life. But, after a deap breath, he cries out loud. When everyone including the king was hoping ge would say Om Nama shivaya(praise the lord shiva), he cries out Om Namo Narayanaya(praise be with lord Narayana). As a result, the king orders the guards to punish him and tie him to the idol of lord Narayana and dump it into the sea. That's what u'll be seeing in the entire song. The reason behind why they show this 12th century episode in a sci-fi movie will be revealed to us in climax. It's to show that every thing that happens around the world has it's own reason. To give you a background....this whole movie is based on “Chaos theory”...this scene is the conflict between saivas and Vaishnavas (two major classification of Hindusium once upon a time). The one who threatens Kamal is the king. He belongs to saiva and wants to move the Vaishnava statue out of that temple and Kamal is trying to protect that. Later as Kamal was caught the king commands him to say saiva name which Kamal refuses. So the king puts him into ocean. Keeping all this apart Kamal relates this scene with the tsunami happened in 2004 using chaos theory.... In this movie he has played 10 roles 🙏🏼 a must watch movie I would say

The movie then fast forwards to the present day, where the 9 other characters come into play, and the finale is where this historical portion ties in the whole plot. Basically, it is a science fiction movie that is based on the Chaos Theory. You should watch this movie at least 3 times to get the whole jigsaw put together. If you can see only the god, you'll not feel the pain A mind that believes in Ashtaksharam (Om Namo Narayanaya) cannot see Panjaksharam (Nama Sivaya). Same way, we vaishnavites will never worship towards lord Shiva. We strong Vaishnavites will not lose our dignity to Shaivaites. But the plot for this whole scene is based on the history which took place during the chozha(chola) dynasty. The history between people who worshipped Lord Vishnu and people who worshipped lord Shiva. Here the character portrayed by Kamal Hassan is Rangaraja Nambi. Rangaraja Nambi is worships lord Vishnu and he tries to save the idol from being destroyed. The king worships lord Shiva and wants everyone to do the same. So as you can see in the scene. He's brought out alongwith the idol and there's a small talk like little bit of Hindu mythology. Then he gives one last chance to say "Om nama Shivaya" (hail lord shiva) but instead he says "om namo Narayana" (hail lord Vishnu). Finally he's sunk alongwith the idol. The lady and the kid who cry are his wife and son in this scene. The lyrics of the song are intense and meaningful written by Vaali. No this song was not sung by Kamal Haasan. But he has sung another song in this film.

In olden days, Temples were made only to Lord Shiva.....And Lord Vishnu is like a tenant in Lord Shiva’s temple. But during those days, there was a long lasting fight between Vaishnavites and shaivites, on who’s god is powerful....So, Shaivite kings....to humiliate Vaishnavites, doesn’t allow Lord Vishnu inside Shiva temple as tenant.... This scene is the extraction of Lord Vishnu statue from Lord Shiva’s temple by a shaivite( one who follows lord shiva) king.And Kamala hasan ( Vaishnavite) is brave enough to try protecting the idol, whereas other Vaishnavites were afraid to act against their shaivite king. Hey Dad. This move is highly a masterpiece as firstly Kamal had acted in 10 roles simultaneously. As everyone in the comments may have already told you: First 20 Minutes: This is the clash between Saivites (people who only believe that Lord Shiva is the supreme god) and Vaishnavites (people who believe that Lord Vishnu is the supreme god) in the 12th Century, and Kamal is a Vaishnavite, and so although he is forced to say the Panja Atcharam "Om Nama Shivaaya" a saying said by Lord Shiva followers proving that Lord Shiva is the only best god, however he says the Atcha Atcharam "Om Naamo Naaraayanaaya" a saying said by Lord Vishnu followers, as he is loyal to his believed god Vishnu. Because of this the King (Kulothunga Chola II) planned to punish Kamal (Rangarajan Nambi) by making him sink in the ocean with his loved idol of Vishnu. The rest of the film: Soon, they show Kamal as Govind, a biotechnologist, in 2004. He is completely opposite to how he was portrayed in the 12th century. This is depicting "after life". He is an athiest, who denies the existence of any god. The rest of the movie is Fletcher (another Kamal), trying to steal the vector-virus (bio-weapon) from Govind, and how the other characters (Kamal's multiple roles) contribute to the stealing of the vector-virus issue and chase. (Kamal roles: Rangarajan Nambi, Govind, George W. Bush, Christian Fletcher, Shingan Narahazi, Balram Naidu, Avtar Singh, Krishnaveni Paatti, Vincent Poovaraghan, and Khalifullah Khan Mukhtar). At the end when Christain Fletcher snatches the vial containing the virus from Govind, he opens the Vector-Virus and the virus starts spreading in the ocean, however at the right time a tsunami comes and prevents the virus from spreading. The end: Kodhai (Asin) and Govind (Kamal) are talking. [Kothai also depicts 'after life', as she was the wife of the Kamal in the 12th Century] Kodhai talks about how god is true, and gets angry at Kamal for not believing the existence of god. And for that Govind replies saying that "I never said god is not true, I am saying if god exists it would be good", and then the camera zooms out revealing that they are behind the the sunkel idol in the 12th Century (with Rangarajan Nambi's skeleton) near the ocean. This indirectly proves the 'chaos theory', talking about how, because of the sunken idol, after many centuries, the tsunami in 2004 was formed at the right time preventing the virus. Indirectly trying to convey the audience that it was because of Lord Vishnu, for the prevention of the deadly virus. Bonus: + Since god never saved the religious (Rangarajan Nambi) Govind's past life, god saved him through all obstacles when he was an athiest in his current life (Govind). As you may have noticed, whenever Govind escapes from Fletcher, there is always an easter egg/hidden detail showing that it was because of Vishnu/Murugan/Shiva (Sticker/Car Brand Name), and how god saved him. + Lord Vishnu has 10 Avatars according to Hindu Mythology; Kamal's ten roles also represents Vishnu's 10 Avatars and the characteristics. Kamal Hasan is indeed a very versatile actor. In this movie, he played in 10 characters. It is 1 extra compared to 'Nadigar Thilagam" Sivaji Ganesan who played 9 characters in the movie, Navarathiri. He is considered as the encyclopedia of acting where Kamal and most of the Tamil actors learned their acting from. You should check him out. About this scene, it dates back to the 12th century when Hinduism was still not unified. Hinduism consists of 6 separate religions that teach the same ideology. But during that time period, the King who was a Saivite wanted to remove all temples of the Vaishnavites. The story here is that Kamal was a Vaishnavite trying to protect one of these temples. Remember to keep your mind wide open when watching Kamal Hasan movies. He likes to include so many puns and references throughout the movie in all his movies. For this scene, you can see an eagle came and sat over the place where they hung him. The eagle (Garuda) is claimed to be the vehicle of Lord Narayana (The idol that Kamal is trying to protect). To show the eagle here is like showing that Lord Narayana Himself came to help him. Get the pun? The word-play is also very heavy in this song and one needs to really understand Tamil to get the real meanings behind them.

So he tried to remove the deity(statue) from the temple. But the priest(Kamal haasan) of the temple doesn't give up and tries to protect. The king gives him chance telling him that he is going to sink the statue but the priest can go home. But the priest still doesn't give up. So the king sinks the statue with the priest. Remember all this happened in the 12th century in southern India.

He played as Jesus Christ (crucifixion part only) in 'Annai Vellankanni' (1971). Shivaji Ganesan the great actor (tamil) played 9 charaters. Dad, you look like Kamal hassan in 'Sigappu Rojakkal'. This location showed in this scene is presently called Chidambaram ( Thilai) and have many more names. Where Lord Natraja(Shiva) is the Main deity in the temple who perform shiva Thandavam and to see the performance, Lord Vishnu and others came there. There are two faction of devotes. Once who pray shiva and once who pray Vishnu. So the king portrayed here is a chola and they r shiva devotes. so they are forcefully converting the other faction. Those place are huge devotional and tourist attraction nowadays the temple and the river the mangrove forest. Till date u can find a bit of conflict among those two faction all around India. while the general public feels both gods are same. And bty that's my hometown 😁😊.

the temple here is chidabaram where shiva as nataraj and vishnu as govindaraj both worship together and both diety leaves happly until the vaishnav starts calling shiva as demi god (you can also find written today in iskon books that shiva is demi god) this angerd the king kulothunga chola 2 and he ordered to throw the govindaraj statue along with his childhood friend nambi in ocean then the temple where two gods where living happily one was left behind alone and other was order to leave so heart breaking
