I have difficulty understanding how Peiper could be considered a war criminal. He was a good and intelligent officer, followed orders as all good soldiers must do. His unit was also the “Tip of the Spear”, which defines the attitude and focus of the battle group. There were in no position to take prisoners and tie up their own troops guarding prisoners or escorting them to the rear. Allied soldiers did the same starting upon the landings in Normandy, although rarely published. Murders of unarmed German troops by American soldiers occurred in Dachau by the Thunderbird division with no penalties handed out. Thanks for posting the video, very informative.

In Dachau there were KZ-guards, not troops!

@@robertomeneghetti6215 Robert, if you read the after action reports, there were convalescing German troops in that group, not all KZ guards. Thats why the prosecution of the commander of the division was buried by the 3rd army commander (Patton). Army JAG wanted to prosecute but was ordered to bury the evidence.

Hermann Priess: After the war, Priess was convicted of war crimes for his involvement in the Malmedy massacre and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. He was released from the Landsberg Prison in 1954 and died in 1985.

Very little has changed over the last 79 years to that part of Belgium.

Good video - are you aware of the Chenogne massacre carried out by the US 11th Armoured Division, 1st January 1945. Here, 80 German POWs were massacred by order.

I did a quick search on this. WOW! I shall bring this up when I do the vid on Malmedy. My intent is to put that together over the holidays. I've started reading the court transcripts.

Sad you point out the wrong massacre field - and what are your sources? Beautiful scenery though!

The German soldier at 1:56 who then turns toward the camera is in most of WWII type documentaries. Has he ever been identified?

I will look at my After the Battle book as it provides a study of the whole filming sequence.

The author, Jean Paul Pallud, who spent years interviewing battle participants and civilians in the area, studied the captured footage. He discovered all the camera angles but could only identify one of the Germans, and it was not our guy. He labeled troops that appeared in multiple shots as "Soldier X" and the like. By the way, this footage was taken at the Poteau crossroads, which is now unrecognizable with the area's development. It is also unfortunate that the Poteau museum is now defunct.
