Kangaroo 1982 Sun Electronics Mame Retro Arcade Games 

I had completely forgotten about this game. Good memories for someone who grew up in 80s arcades.

An amazing game for 1982...platform gaming, fighting and cute graphics

Quite simple to the present day but in its time it was pure luxury.

Man, I loved this game! I wish they had a Mac and PC version. It was the bomb!

I realized that this game is a clone of Donkey Kong except that the American version is by Atari. I can tell that Sun Electronics is Sunsoft and did the Japanese version of Kangaroo. This explains that the kid Kangaroo said ママ!(mama!) meaning MOM! in Japanese.

haha, I was just watching some nature show and they showed Kangaroos sparring, I then remembered this arcade game. Looked it up and found this, awesome. Memories, and yah I never realised it said ママ! hahah, I too studied Japanese in college and well, now I know, Thanks for the memories.

Remember playing this at a local store, the upright console was like this generic build with no graphics displayed on it, they’d change the game every now and then, Popeye was another game on it.

I always wondered why they didn't finish translating the game. Some of the joeys at the very start of the game say ママ (mama) in Katakana. Was it an oversight or done on purpose? I used to wonder what that was as a kid, then I saw the game a few weeks ago after having been studying Japanese and busted out laughing; I'd totally forgotten about it for years. Anyway, for some reason I really like this game. But, just as with another of my arcade favourites, Berzerk, I absolutely suck at it.

Wow! Thanks for bringing back the memory of an old arcade game I had forgotten. I was watching the video on the Popeye game when I saw this thumbnail! Does anyone remember a game where you went to different planets and fought the aliens? You would start on one planet,finish it then go on to the next planet. I thought it was Solar Quest but I found that and it's not it. Does anyone know the game? It was a shooter game that moved left to right if I remember correctly.

Loved this game.

There's an emulator called Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, or MAME. I have MAME32 v .103. You have to download the ROMS seperately. Just look for the game in MAME, then google the directory name of it and add .zip. I.E. shamsho4.zip is for Samurai Showdown IV, kangaroo.zip is Kangaroo.

@IgnatzKolisch Yeah, you'd think someone over there would've noticed it or was it a problem of not changing the sprites without reprogramming the whole thing when it was exported.

You'd think it wouldn't kill either Sunsoft or the US licencor to simply alter the graphic to say "mama" anyway, though perhaps there wasn't enough space to add it in well enough, and it only last a couple seconds on the screen anyway I suppose.

I had a hard time playing 🎴 this game.

does the tune/tone from the bell at 0:52 have any particular name? I know it's common to hear in cookoo clocks, etc.

Got a question for you - the arcade version of this doesn't have the constant background music - it's the kangaroo's hops. Any way to tweak it to work correctly on MAME?

Kind of vague unfortunately.. I'll need more details. Is it a shooter, where the screen scrolls from left to right like Scramble? How old are we talking? It almost sounds like Gyruss or Halley's Comet but those scroll upwards.
