Kanoa won it fairly and squarely by a country mile.Flores had one decent wave which simply wasn't enough. Congrats Kanoa, well deserved and very well done !
I'm really happy for Kanoa. This kid has lots of potencial. The entire event he looked like he got in sinc with himself. Worries free, just surf and enjoy. Beautiful. So beautiful. Congrats Kanoa.
Kanoa killed it, insane surfing, this is the type of final i like to see. jeremy surfed incredible aswell, stoked for the little grom tho, he deserved that
Honestly don't get why people are attacking Igarashi and the fact that he won. You don't have to agree but blame the judges not him. Plus, it's not like he was bad, he was kinda really good
Even though Slater had some sick barrel rides he just didn't catch enough waves to show the judges enough solid turns and carves. Kanoa was more consistent and caught more good rides and shredded more open face. I think Igarashi legitimately beat Slater but if those barrels rides were scored differently it could have gone the other way which I wouldn't agree with because Igarashi was more consistent throughout the whole heat.
Kanoa was great in the final. Flores only had the one excellent wave. My overall complaint of the contest is they underscored barrels in general. Barrel riding is (and always will be) the most exciting part of surfing.
Kanoa did a great job, I like how he did a careful approach, he’s precise in his moves he knows his wave and rather than being impulsive he’s more of a consistent type. He’s not as flashy as other top surfer but he does deserve the title and the hype and i really hope to see more of him in the future!
Flores'8.93 is by far the best wave of the heat. Those two turns are sick ! In what world Kanoa wins that final ??? Judges ask for critical turns but they give him a 9+ for a couple of floaters...
No doubt that Konoa's floaters were sick and his turns too ! But I agree that Jeremy was underscored in this heat. And I'm far from being the only one...
Flores made the same mistake as slater did, if he wasn’t sitting so deep waiting for those barrels that never were, a couple of Flores waves that he paddle into were begging for some big first turns. Too deep and wrong place wrong time.
Paulo Eclectik the judges were scoring big first moves on that section, followed by good combos not those kinda shallow barrels, what the women’s final and check out Steph Gilmore 10. And compare the differences to Kelly’s and Flores battle. All they had to do was change their tactics tho rail surfing.
Igarashi is the new kid in town. Flores' mistake was not connecting to the inside section, a big walled-off bowl, on his first wave. Igarashi is smart as well as hot.
Even Igarashi’s trainer admitted Flores’ first wave was better than Igarashi’s... and about that last tube... Great event anyway, Igarashi’s probably going to be a title contender right along with Medina Florence and co :-) and good to see Flores back, hope he won’t screw his season after that.
Nah!! Not really. Kanoa should have lost even against slater!! Slater found amazing barrels and tha was hard to do it... Kanoas surfing was cliche...just turns and snaps...i did not see one only barrel from kanoa...and to find a barrel was hard...just to magic surfers...flores and slater was the best of keramas...
I love the surf community and definitely love when parents and other family members cheer on their surfer but my God was igarashis party laying it on thick
Kanoa's surfing was quite safe. Essentially his board and fins did a lot of the work I believe, however Jeremy's surfing was extremely radical and always positioned at the most sucky part of the wave making each manoeuvre extremely difficult to pull off. It was close, however Jeremy was the rightful better surfer in those conditions on that day..and should have taken away that trophy.
I thought he was American citizen but gets to ride for Japan maybe Kelly can ride for Syria and other surfers just pick a country to be fair to other surfers
Flores (like Slater) were robbed big time so a Japanese could win an Asian contest with the Tokyo Olympics on the horizon. Most veteran surfers like Slater and Flores were surfing for Sunny but WSL judges stopped most people's dream. It was so mesmerizing to watch them powersurf and gettin barrelled like they were posessed by Sunny's fighting spirit. Slater vs Flores should have been the final but judges screwed up pro surfers legacies again and again.
Very well said. It's funny, I don't "perform" when I surf, but I like dealing with changing waves and I was inspired by the way they were both responding to the individuality of their waves. Slater vs. Flores needed to happen.
Na Kanoa outsurfed him fair and square, also don't you think it's weird how Kanoa claims Japanese when hes spent his whole life in the states I find it a little dishonest and a bit gimmicky
I think Hawaiians are setting the tone to claiming your heritage. Tatiana WW is from Hawaii but chose to rep Brazil. Lets hope JJF doesnt feel like he needs to claim America or else the Hawaiian flag will never get another world title.
