Awesome video. Back when KC dreamed big and built for the future. KCI and Truman Sports Complex plus Kemper all at the same time.

Now it’s a new airport, new women’s soccer stadium, downtown ballpark by end of decade, and chiefs will have new digs within the next 10 years. They will build in on the old Kauffman Stadium site.

History is about to repeat itself with the new terminal, built for travel needs for today and in the future.

Love the old planes and airlines. Miss them much. The terminal design was brilliant but made obsolete by hijackers and terrorists. TWA had a huge influence on its design but bailed out when security upgrades became necessary. Hence the move of its major hub to St Louis.

I've heard that they nearly went with the landside/airside design used at Tampa International Airport but decided the people movers connecting the airsides to the main terminal would be too costly. Of course, Tampa is considered one of the best airports in the country today, and the new circular terminals were obsolete the moment metal detectors and x-rays were required for security screening. I wonder what MCI would look like today had they gone with the Tampa-style design. Would TWA have kept their hub here instead of moving to St. Louis?

In the early 1980's, TWA asked Kansas City to invest in a major airport redevelopment plan that would have greatly expanded the terminal buildings with expanded check-in areas, dedicated security checkpoints, terminal connection structures, additional restrooms and retail spaces, and moving walkways to make it easier for connecting passengers to make connections. They also wanted major changes to terminal C to handle more widebody jets. However, the city said no because MCI's construction ran over budget and was still underwater; and TWA didn't have the capital resources to do it themselves. As a result, TWA focused on St. Louis and merged with Ozark. A few airlines tried building a hub at MCI (Braniff International, Braniff 2, United, Eastern, and USAir), but due to how the terminals were constructed, it was a very inconvenient design to support a true airline hub.

Now a new one is being built half the size

From what I was told is that Saint Louis built a bigger airport and took all the international flights from KC.

@@raha243 St. Louis Lambert Airport is smaller than KCI, it’s a 1 terminal design just like KCI will soon be. British Airways has expressed interest to flying to KCI once the new terminal is complete

But it's being used at half capacity. So it works out in the end. It's also possible to build a 2nd terminal identical to the new one on the other side of the airport where Terminal D would have been.

Why does the ATC Tower look so different? He said it was completed in this film, but it looks nothing like that. Did it get rebuilt again after 72?
