When I worked in geotech engineering, a company that I used to work for worked on a couple of NASCAR tracks where water was getting under the asphalt and lifting it because of drainage issues. It's pretty wild. What they just did was in the top surface, race tracks are well over a foot thick. At least they caught it before it totally delaminated.

How does water get under the asphalt layer? Aren’t there sufficient drained layers underneath the asphalt to wick the water away? That sort of hydrostatic pressure buildup is exactly why sub-base and base course material are coarse aggregates, I would have thought.

@@Kickstart500 my Milwaukee still out powers and outlasts my coworkers Dewalt though, Dewalt has came a long way in the last 5yrs though especially with battery longevity. Just had to replace my first Milwaukee battery a few months ago that was 6yrs old, my old Dewalts were lucky to last much over a year and were heavy. He is still using the same batteries he bought almost 3yrs ago so they have stepped up

Called a weeper. From buildingspeed site: "Weepers exist because asphalt is porous, sort of like floral foam. When rain hits asphalt, it doesn’t sit on the surface: It seeps down through the track. Asphalt tracks aren’t asphalt all the way through: The track starts with the native dirt, on top of which are placed layers of finely ground rocks and stones. If there is enough rain, water collects below the track. If there isn’t enough downward drainage, there is nowhere for the water to go but back up through the track. If the water comes up in a banked turn, it runs or ‘weeps’ down the track."

Only thing is the dirt normally used under tracks is red clay and normally not the native soils that absorb water, packed red clay is nearly impermeable. Plus they are drilling below a seam thats likely not sealed/adhered to the adjoining section very well either

The drill is a hammer/driver combo which allows it to be able to drill holes up to 1/2 an inch in diameter in many different materials including concrete and asphalt. Pair that with a 6ah Flexvolt battery and damn near nothing will stop it

reminds me of this track i went to for a nationals race in my dwarf. it was in Tuscaloosa, and had cracks ALL around the track with a spring seeping water through all the cracks. wasn't wet, but damp. actually, it mighta been a bit wet. it was SO much fun, closest i ever got to running on dirt. i had the pole in the second heat, qualified 2nd fastest. then, it starts pouring down rain... never got to go back, i was so disappointed.
