What are your favourite desktop speakers (perhaps a pair that aren't quite as expensive as this Kanto package!)?

I just received the YU2 and Sub 8. I wasn't expecting them to sound this good together. They blow the Razer speaker they replaced out the water. Also SO much better than 2 paired Apple HomePod minis.

I ordered the sub6 as well, I haven’t received it yet but I was starting to wonder if I should have got the 8. But your happy with the 6? I’m also running the Kanto Yu2

@@grimer1805 I think the sub 6 is perfectly sufficient for my gaming setup. I am above another bedroom and wouldn’t want more. However my wfh setup with edifier R1280 dbs and T5 subwoofer is half the price and sound better imo.

Nice review. I'm pleased with the YU2s. Especially the lack of a big hiss, it's only barely audible, which is critical for me for nearfield computer desktop use. Vocals are a bit recessed, and you have to turn the volume up high, but the sound is clean, clinical, detailed. I also have the sub 8 which really adds the bass needed for a better overall experience including movies and/or gaming if that's your thing.

I recently bought the kantos, and I agree, they like to be driven, they need to be at least above 50 percent, if not they just sound too low, but over 50 or 80 its a huge sound, Ive been playing some games and the boom sound is awesome.

Mark, Purchased these after your review and am enjoying them as I work on my computer. I’m surprised you didn’t recommend using a better DAC with these as the speaker DAC is lacking. I’m using an Audioquest Dragonfly Black out of the M1 iMac and the mini-Jack aux input into the speakers. They sound fantastic! Love the channel and all of your reviews that seem to routinely open my wallet😉😀

Curious why set the sub xover at the very bottom of the YU2 abilities instead of going up away from that little guys floor capability and let the sub do a better job of that?

I have these. First I'm kinda dissapointed with the sound, then I tinker with EQ a bit (reduce the bass a little) and add a cheap Edifier T5 sub. The difference is huge, I'm happy with the sound now, very suitable for my use case.

I've been happy with my YU2's for the past 20 months, so much that today I bought a second pair for another workstation. I went without a sub for my near-bedroom workspace and they held up well, but I'm getting one for the other space. I am considering the Jamo S 810 sub (10" 150W) as an alternative, it's a little bit cheaper at around $160 USD vs $180 USD for the Sub8 (on sale).

As you mentioned, can I connect another sub to this pair of speakers right? I'm asking this because where I live I cannot get the sub6-sub8 from Kanto, but I would love to add a Sub to the sound system. Which one do you recommend?

Another desktop-powered speaker system that is worth considering, Mark, is the Peachtree 24 model. They have 24-Bit/96kHz USB and Optical digital inputs; full-size 1/4 inch RCA L/R analog inputs switchable between AUX and built-in PHONO - no need for a separate outboard preamp to listen to vinyl. They also have Bluetooth and have a subwoofer output for additional bass. Additionally, you can choose your input and control the volume from the IR wireless remote control or right on the front panel of the speaker. The remote control is perhaps their most useful feature because I find that their tone controls fix the sometimes dreadful sound quality when one is listening to RU-vid downloads.

@@richardwright59 Although I can't do a direct comparison to the Yu2 active speakers, I can tell you that the Peachtrees sound their best below 85 db and then they start to distort. (But I never play them so loud because I use them as my desktop speakers - and they are excellent!

Yes, of course. But do buy a sub with a phase shift switch, as subs and speakers from another brand could be opposite polarized. Also, a sub with variable cross-over.

It's January 2022 so I'm late to the party. If you see this Mark may I ask how you connect your Kantos? I've run YU4s for the past eighteen months connected to a Zen DAC via Audioquest RCA cables. MacBook Air is the source. No conflicts at all between the amp in the DAC and the amp in the YU4s. The Zen's 'Power Match' is set to 'on'. YU4s work very well in a near field environment and are about the same size as the Edifiers in your review. I opted for the YU4s after a musician friend lent me KRK Rokit 4 speakers and balanced cables. Connecting the Rokit 4s with individual power cables and adapters, etc., cabbaged my head. The YU4s give me sufficient bass to make a sub-woofer unnecessary... for now. :) PS: The YU4s don't have that blue LED!

@@sirturd2954 I have no idea if anything has changed between the two speakers in the past 9 months. But I can say that the Bluetooth functionality on my A2's has been a bit unstable with the M1 Macbook Air that I got after working just fine with the old iMac they were previously used with.

@@melprophet1936 thanks so much for posting this! I’m looking for a setup for m1 pro and it seems Bluetooth issues is a thing across the board. I wanted to get the mx keys and mouse from Logitech since apple stopped making space gray (why!) but Bluetooth connection is reportedly spotty and the unifying receiver is usb a and not c. I usually don’t buy into new tech to avoid stuff like this but I really needed a new MacBook. Grrr 🥴

A good friend has the Sub8 and it sounds really good but if you're like me and like to exercise your speakers sometimes I think the YU6's are a better choice due to their increased power handling although there's also quite a price difference between the YU2's and the YU6's

I am curious at exactly what you mean by the Kanto speakers lacking that umpff in terms of having to have the volume turned up rather high at the speaker and your Mac mini? I’m a bit of an audiophile having worked for Harman/Becker and being exposed to truly outstanding audio, and have been looking at getting a pair of bookshelf speakers for my MacBook Air. I like the design of the Kantos and they would work great for me in my minimalist desk setup but if they struggle to output enough, maybe I should keep looking? I am not looking at shaking the foundation, my hime theater setup can take care of that nicely, but want quality sound reproduction. Having just a USB option isn’t that appealing but it does mean reducing the different types of cables. It’s too bad the other speakers, like you said, look like they came out of the late 80’s - early 90’s. Bluetooth Kanto speakers would be awesome.
@MarkEllisReviews

They just seem to need driving a fair bit, that's all. Still loads of headroom, though, so you won't have an issue. Would be nice if they had bluetooth, though.
