The reason why she wears a Korowai is because she is the leader, same with the Men. They also have to compete against other groups for that trophy too. Also each group performs different disciples: 1- Whakaeke(Entrance) 2- Moteatea(Traditional chant) 3- Poi( Women's dance involving balls in strings) 4 - Waiata-a-Ringa(Action Song)5- Haka, which your already familiar with, 6-Whakawatea(Exit) or Waiata Tira(Choral Song) optional which one you want to choose. With the song with pictures of ppl that passed away we honor & dedicate the song to those that had a huge influence to the group/school, lastly that's a Taiaha (maori weapon) that the men use during Haka

If you watch enough of them you will be able to tell the difference between good and great much like with dancing comps.. timing, singing, the songs themselves and the performance. Also you should watch one with Poi in it and maybe watch the adults ones 🙂

Every haka or song has movements that correspond to what they’re actually saying, that’s why every set has a different vibe. Haka’s are strong and loud because they’re a challenge to other people and songs are peaceful and calm because they’re telling a story. And everyone is so on point because they train almost everyday and weekends for these competitions

Many things determine if a kapa (group) is better than others, how their clothing looks, how it sits, if it’s clean ect. But the main thing is pronunciation of the words and how clearly the judges can make out what they are saying!

Love your content brother, I cherish your will to dig deep into our culture. I recommend reacting to Maori weaponry. The meaning and protocol behind the use of each weapon would really interest you. Also there a many short documentaries about the invasion of Taranaki, with the crowns objective being to destroy kingitanga (maori equivalent of royalty). I think you would be very interested in this side of the history, also the craft of carving and tattooing. Keep up the hard work my bro 👌

We compete at regional level (there are roughly 20ish regions in NZ with multiple iwi (tribes) within those respective regions). Some regions have 10+ competing groups and usually 2 or 3 groups make it through to nationals which fall on an off year. This is a high school group and this is a national bracket. A bracket encompasses 7 song-length items so usually groups train for 6 months or more out of the year. It’s both a sport, performing arts and it’s our beautiful culture. It depicts our warrior nature and history, our essence and who we are as people through story telling. We are all so passionate when performing is because we sing and haka about real things only. Usually a haka is an act of defiance or to express our pain/mamae of issues we as Māori face on a political, historical and cultural plane. The moves you see with the taiaha/rākau/stick are Maori weaponry moves, and we have many other weapons that are derived from carved wood or bone that our ancestors used in combat. We also have our own instruments made of these same materials. The face coverings are representative of whakapapa/geneology/lineage and many other things. We don’t have an ‘s’ in our vocabulary the word you asked about was - ‘tuki tuki’. The way that the bracket is judged is a point system and each item is worth 100 points roughly (some are non-aggregate items), and you get points removed for every mistake. There is one judge allocated to one item and they are chosen usually based on their prestige and kapa haka history. Points get removed for simple things like - someone not doing a wiri (shaking of hands), someone seen not stamping their foot (keeping beat - takahi), levels (if everyone’s levels are the same), pronunciation and annunciation of words, timing, how it sounds (if it’s flat or sharp). I love and appreciate that you watch these videos and as someone who does hakas and is a Maori, it’s entertaining to watch cultures meeting.

The reason why the wāhine (girl) is wearing a korowai is because she is the kaea or female leader, there are both a male and a female leader who both wear korowai. Also every haka is not the same, they all have different meanings behind them.
