Explanation of how kara cancels work and how you can take advantage of its special properties.

Some extra information: The kara cancels with lights in Street Fighter 2 Turbo (ST) are known as renda (連打) cancels. Renda means multiple/repeated hits in Japanese. Some of these kara cancels require inputs to be rapidly entered (sometimes in a one frame window). This action is commonly known as plinking. If people are interested, we can do a demonstration of some of the kara cancels shown in the video.

Definitely interested in seeing some more demonstrations. Keep up the good work! It would be nice if you shared more of the foreign names for these mechanics like this comment as well. Whether it is "foreign" due to other games/communities using different terms or another national language (including kanji if possible), I sometimes find that I'm actually aware of the mechanic but just didn't know what other people called it.

That does happen a lot. Researching this topic showed up a few different technique names based on the move that was being kara canceled. We'll continue to post this kind of info (and if it's in Japanese, we can definitely provide the Japanese characters as well).

Interesting. I'm assuming you can cancel the start up of A moves with B specials?

@@SeaLeafDojo Late reply but you can cancel down smash into any input special or move with Ken or Ryu, increasing the range of their moves

It's been in Smash since at least Melee, boost grabs are basically the same thing

I think the best Kara example in Skullgirls is Big Band’s Kara 5MK > H Brass. The extra distance he gains allows him to hit opponents a fullscreen distance away, rather than being just shy. This is useful in things like the Peacock matchup. However, I think it’s really cool you included SG in this video and the vial load Kara is something I could see actually be used!

Cancel a move with another one without hitting the opponent.

basically for example in 3rd strike when imputing a move then immediately to a grab the move is cancelled giving the grab more range than usual

Correct. The video does not give strong examples of timing for this which leads to confusion. Everyone I've shown this video to to try and explain karas to has watched it and walked away afterwards with no idea how to achieve what the video is trying to illustrate.

Amazing video. Can you help me understand what exactly happens at 5:20 and why one combo lands while the other doesn't? Hard to tell when the canceling happens

All these examples first show a move or combo without kara canceling and then with it. The SF2 Ken combo is kara canceling the third LK with his super.

@4:54 I’m a bit confused with guile’s Kara cancel light punch into flash kick combo, looking at the input tracker on the left, the Kara canceled light punch shows up after the kick input…

It works both ways. You can also input the third crouching LP before the K. Not sure the exact logic behind it but ST allows it.

I still can’t do N.Ken’s short short super! 😫 I very rarely get the full 7 hit combo. 8 LK (hold 8) LK Super motion then LK + LP I practised getting a 3 hit crouching short combo and use the same timing to do the short short super lk+lp. I don’t know what’s up with that.. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I wish I can give you some execution tips but all I can say is you just have to do it fast. 2 [hold] LK, LK, 36236 LK, LP This might help a bit but in my mind, I'm doing a very sloppy DP motion rather than the full double QCF after the second 2LK. So 2LK, [2]LK, 623LK,6LP (or 6236LK, LP). I'm playing on stick so I naturally get the 3 between the second LK and the first 6.
