A strange but fascinating cassette system with tapes encoded with a data track that generate text on-screen! This system is like the cassette version of CD+G Karaoke discs. Watch as we demo the system and go inside for a peek at the circuitry as well.
The databits channel is pleased to provide you with the best in new tech, vintage and oddity gadgets, media formats, repair projects, electronic experiments and restorations of thrift store finds. There are also many "how to" and instructional titles. The goal is to search through garage sales, antique malls and resale shops for gadgets you didn't know existed, electronic toys you had as a kid, stereo or turntables your parents used or a film projector your school used to teach you valuable lessons. Typically we produce one video a week with several trips to a thrift store per month. Sometimes, through research, an item is searched for on ebay and purchased for review. A list of some of the most popular items watched here on the channel are: record cutting on various materials, DLP television repairs, VCR's, Camcorders, turntables, record players, records, car reviews and dictation equipment.

Looking at the jumpers above that first unpopulated section it looks like there was an AM/FM radio model as well as an AUX input option.

Possibly the MIDI is for output of the lyric data. Because patent 4953039 that's mentioned on the B side of the cassettes, is about storing MIDI data on tape.

That "residue" is Sony Bond Glue. Over time it dries out, becomes conductive and corrosive. The term coined by several of us audio nuts has evolved into DSBG or Dreaded Sony Bond Glue. It's a common failure cause in vintage electronics.

Repaired a Sony Betacam deck recently, lots of LEDs on the front panel, each with a rubber-like shroud to support the LED and prevent light spillage. Almost every one had turned hard and corrosive. Entire LED leads disolved, circuit board traces disolved. Horrible mess 😭 It's a shame that so many faults/breakdowns are caused by aging rubber and plastic parts & glues while 99.9% of the machine could virtually last forever!

Was also thinking--wasn't that "single motor driving both tape decks" thing pretty common in dual-deck boomboxes back then?
@zidane2k1
@zidane2k1 7 лет назад
I wonder what sorts of corruptions you could get on the screen if you did that thing where you press the pause button slightly to lift the pinch roller off the capstan and make the tape play faster and/or unevenly.
@Lachlant1984
@Lachlant1984 7 лет назад
Good point. Also, this machine like many karaoke machines has a pitch control, I presume the pitch control adjusts the motor speed and doesn't apply any kind of digital signal processing or digital pitch control or time scale modification or anything like that, so, would adjusting the tape speed cause data corruption too?
@mbvideoselection
@mbvideoselection 7 лет назад
Lachlant1984 it sounds like there are plenty of timing/guard bits to enable it to decode at any intended speed.
@altebander2767
@altebander2767 6 лет назад
Since they used such a cheap drive, it's likely that the variations in tape speed are already bad without the pitch control. For this reason typical ways to record data onto audio casettes have a large margin of error when it comes to speed. Essentially they typically record some way to recover the clock from the tape. For more details I can recommend the book "TV Typewriter Cookbook" which the Author Don Lancester has put online on his website.

The MIDI output should be used for a player piano, which they did do with cassette at one point.

The harris chip is just a video sync generator, part of the video output circuit... the mystery motorola chips are likely just 68HC711 or some form of 6800 series MCU with a custom ROM. Very common for Motorola to custom number chips.
@BertGrink
@BertGrink 5 лет назад
It is certainly true that MCU manufacturers would use custom IC numbers for such preprogrammed ROM versions of their common devices.

The reason for only one motor in twin deck machines, is so that both tapes run at the same speed as each other, whether it's running slow or fast.

You can record MIDI information to tape using FSK (also used by modems and computer cassettes), so that is very likely outputting MIDI to be used on a synth for accompaniment. I'm guessing the MIDI FSK is on one of the "Side B" tracks and the lyrics FSK is on the other.

I recently bought one of those (a CD version) to a recycling place, where they recycle electronics. My niece and some friend of her's and a few others used it when it was new... for only a few years. Some years passed by with no use. The CD part of the unit doesn't close properly anymore. It made me think I might as well get rid of it.

That was absolutely stunning. Thank for making that video. :-) One wonders if there is a top-of-the-line version of that circuit board and ALL the empty sockets were filled with their designated components and all wired in.... what would that thing do?... what features?... definitely there would be more jacks in the back panel.. lol! :-D
@databits
@databits 7 лет назад
Yes, it needs more jacks on the back panel!! Like a Tape Out (instead of speaker out), a Line In for recording from CD, and a composite video out would be nice. And thanks for watching it!

I think the MIDI port would go to a teleprompter screen, often found at the front of the stage tilted at an angle facing the back of the state so the audience cannot see it but the person on stage can. Pure guess, but it is as good as any I guess.

Wonder if you could copy those tapes with a dual auto reverse tape deck, such as the Teac W-865R Double Auto-Reverse Cassette Deck.
@rawr51919
@rawr51919 7 лет назад
Jerry Spann You probably could, but you'll only get the audio. You would need to capture the output from one of these decks to get the lyric track.
@databits
@databits 7 лет назад
I would imagine you'd need a 4 track copy deck (one that copies both sides at once) to insure best sync with all tracks.
@jeffreylockett558
@jeffreylockett558 3 месяца назад
If you copied one of those cassettes on a dual cassette deck you would get the audio only and not the data for the on screen display, since the data for on screen display is recorded on the other 2 tracks of the tape where side B is normally recorded and most audio cassette decks are not designed to play and record all four of these tracks at once but there are a few exceptions. There are some cassettes duplication machines and a few home double cassette decks that are designed to duplicate both sides at one, basically playing and recording side B backwards while playing and recording side A forwards to save turning over the tape, or using auto reverse to record side B separately if the machine has auto reverse therefore saving time. They have four heads in one instead of just two for stereo. Some auto reverse machines that don’t rotate the heads to play the other side have these exact same heads and both heads and tape work in both direction. There is a way to copy one of those karaoke cassettes on a normal double audio cassette deck that might work however. Once you have copied side A to the end of the recording - not the end of the tape, stop both decks at exactly the same time, turn both the tapes over to side B even though you’re not meant to play side B, then from that exact same spot where you stopped both tapes (without FF or Rew Esther) synchro start recording there which will play and recorded the data for on screen display backwards, which should work as normal when playing in a Karaoke machine before having both played and recorded backwards when copying with cancell each other out. Just make sure that the cassette deck and the blank tape you use is of decent quality so that the data isn’t corrupted through.

If only it had used the DCC mechanism would have been better as the format actually carried the Title and Lyrics data and digital audio so someone missed the boat.

Not to be pedantic...well...ok...to be pedantic...😆...it's only a _graphic_ equalizer if the controls are sliders...and the controls form a graph of the "EQ curve". I'd guess that 99% of people say "graphic equalizer" without even thinking about what the words actually mean ☺️ no judgement 😁👍

i dont think that's midi .. more than likely a AV combo jack. you'd use an adapter that would split out the audio/video to the tv. think sega genises /megadrive

Why would it be labeled "Midi"
@robertgaines-tulsa
@robertgaines-tulsa 7 лет назад
You are kidding about thinking the machine was broken because you heard the data track, right? For someone with experience with classic '80s computers, I would expect you would be able to recognize that. It sounding like it had a higher bit-rate than my Color Computer 2 does have. At the very least, the text gives you something to look at while you are listening to music. They'll let you dub regular cassettes, but they'll be damned if they let you dub their data track too. Sure, you could just flip the tape over to dub the data track backwards, but you would have synchronization issues that would be a pain. I guess you could record the data track on a computer using 44.1kHz pcm. You might be able to get away with 22,050Hz depending on the frequency response needed to capture the data. I wouldn't use a lossy audio codec though. In my experience, it garbled up a CoCo2 data recording. I've never tried flac with that though. I don't think I even have one CD encoded with text. I think they have to be special karaoke CDs. European sound systems used to use a 5-pin din cable to transfer 2 stereo audio channels out and 2 stereo channels in for dubbing. It might of also been used for quadrophonic audio connections. My guess is that if it was labeled as MIDI that it wasn't for the analog audio.
@karlcloudy
@karlcloudy 7 лет назад
But if you dubbed side B backwards to another tape's side B, it'd be recorded backwards also, meaning it'd be the right way around when played normally on side A?
@matthewrichards88
@matthewrichards88 7 лет назад
mipmipmipmipmip syncing would be a problem, but how about a portastudio? Like one of those fostex ones that run at normal speed, you could dub the tracks in real time?
