There's a symbolism to a leader of the Revolutionary Army being a manifestation of soot. Burnt organic matter, typically associated with low-class peasants...rising up to strike the kings of the world down. The living soot thing reminds me of Fairy Tale's make magic. Being able to turn your logia ability into living-seeming things definitely seems like an escalation of mastery. While I could see Haki being involved, I imagine it's more of a devil fruit thing. I didn't think about it before, but soot probably has a great compatibility with the Mera Mera no Mi. I wonder if Sabo and Karasu have any combo moves?
It seems pretty likely that Sabo's power escalates his. Its like Crocodile fighting in the desert, he has way more of his element on hand and its way more effortless. So I see the idea there of putting the two together, especially as Karasu seems like he's very subtle with his abilities and that is probably worth its weight in gold to an organization that needs to hit and run or get in and out.
@@LupineShadowOmega i honestly don't think so. Remember when ace fought smoker, they really just collided together but didn't combine, ace even said they basically cancel out eachother and they could fight for days without someone winning
@@360gunner Well a couple of things. One, they were fighting, not teaming up. Two, Ace's power could technically escalate Smoker's by creating more smoke, but Ace was literally immune to smoke...so what would that escalation matter with it being ineffective. And again, they were fighting and not teaming up.
@@360gunner Even if the fight went on for days, Ace is gonna win regardless, I don't think pre-timeskip smoker even had haki or oda just nerfed him for the sake of the alabasta arc for him to not even use haki but yes, ace would win out of that 1v1 I don't think smoker has that stamina and endurance like ace does when him and jimbei fought for days it will not be for smoker, post time skip smoker got clapped by vergo mid difficulty even though he had haki so ace def wins in that fight at some point when smoker runs out of stamina to use his fruit, he's pretty much powerless without it which the 1v1 post-timeskip smoker getting clapped by 2 characters in one arc law and vergo proves it

I personally don't think Karasu's crow stuff comes from an awakening, I just think it comes from a different specialization. Almost every character we've met with logia's have been fighters, and they have almost solely focused their devil fruit training on honing their combat ability. Reflexively turning parts of your body into the element or creating holes so haki attacks pass through you, for example, is an extremely difficult task to train for and it's what most competent logia users use in fights, and requires an immense amount of focus, quick reflexes and probably some observation haki. Instead of training such combat feats, Karasu focused on his infiltration and spying abilities, his awareness while in his logia form. remember, a logia make the user become the element, the don't just summon it. A fireball created by Sabo or Ace is just as much part of their body as an inflated fist from luffy is, so since the full logia is part of the user, you should be able to train yourself (again, probably mixed with observation) to be able to spread your consciousness along your entire body, even when parts are separated. Flying as a flock of crows instead of as 1 whole person becomes as "easy" as moving each limb of your body in different directions in different patterns. Flying out multiple crows to different locations and listening from each one, feeling things touch them as if people are touching your skin (which they technically are doing), it's all just as impressive as other logia combat feats we've seen, it's just the first that was specialized in something not-combat.
Makes a lot of sense, especially since vergo stated it himself, turning into your element just spreads your body to a wider area. You don’t have to train much to feel certain sections of your body that you willingly spread in a vast area.
Also we have confirmation that ALL parts of your body can feel the presence of other people and the surroundings using observation haki from kinemon... he was aware of the presence of other people and could even fight (though not too well) using only his torso and lower body while the head was far away...
i cant wait to seem other upper limits and unique adaptations of observations haki . like you said combatants seem to get future sight. but things like sanjis long distance feamle sensing, enerus long distance sensing, usopps lo0ng distance senses, and queen otohime ( the fishmen queen) reading emotions seems sick.
By your logic if one snuffs a fireball from Ace or punches an Akainu magma fist from the sky, or destroys/attacks/damages emissions from a logia in general, then the user should receive damage. We know this does not happen. So, I disagree that the emissions generated by the fruit are part of the user’s body.
@@jordanmorris5194 The thing is logias can GENERATE their element. So those instances you are referring to are likely not part of their body as much as splitting apart by Karasu is. It is not mutually exclusive. They can make their element without it being part of them and also make their element as part of them.
After seeing Karasu Fruit in action again that now knowing that it's a possible Logia. It's making me now think that Prince Grus's Clay Fruit could be a Logia as well. Since the way that he uses his Devil Fruit is similar to how Karasu uses the Soot Fruit to make Crows. Honestly I wouldn't mind it honestly I've been wanting to see more Logias.
@@RyanYoxo That's simple Prince Grus Clay Fruit can be used to make People out of Clay, but I think we can guess he can also make Animals out of Clay as well, or anything really. And since Karasu can make Crow since Soot has mass unlike most of the other Logias that have been shown, but who knows maybe isn't Logia it's just a guess. But that could end up not being the case.

Karasu design and DF power is a reminder of a dark past, the *BLACK DEATH.* The plague mask that he wear and the animal crow have something thing in common. They are both associated with death. I believe the reason why Oda chose Karasu DF to be soot is because during the Black Death. People are dying so fast that the only way of getting rid of all the corpses fast enough is by burning them, and body are organic matters. During the Black Death, crows are known to be hanging around infected corpses and eating them. I believe Karasu is the head doctor of the Revolutionary Army.
Well you have to remember that soot can and does start fires. You clean your chimney both to clear it for the flow of air, but also because particle build up could be flammable. So Sabo being able to ignite the soot probably would work and depending on how much Karasu gets to decide on its consistency you might effectively get fire that sticks to targets or hot soot that clings like tar. It would not be something you'd want to get on yourself.
Karasu is the example that devil fruit abilities are much more dependant on the desires and cognition of the individual than the limitations of the ability itself. For example: Another use of the Gum Gum Fruit would be to entangle and choke out opponents like a boa constrictor, but Luffy didn't ever touch upon that ability. Only people like Luffy would not develop that side of his abilities and instead focus on using the durability of rubber to do superhuman things. Doflamingo uses his threads to manipulate but his ability could easily be used to make fancy clothes for people. Maybe some else would be able to make colored threads instead of only white threads. Otama's fruit could easily end up creating a situation similar to the one the Toy Toy Fruit caused in Dressrosa, but that doesn't happen because Otama isn't evil. Edit: another very obvious examples would be the Art Art Fruit, which can definitely be way more than what it is, the Kilo and Ton fruit that would be perfect for brawlers and finally Brook's fruit that could've resurrected him fully, had he not been unfortunate, but then he wouldn't be able to walk on water and all that jazz.
Makes me think of Gecko Moria. If he wasn't so depressed and lazy he could just consume a lot of shadows and become super powerful. Also if he specifically use shadows of fast people he could run super fast, grab an ennemy shadows and snip it under the sun to instakill most people. Won't work against strong haki users most likely but still...
Doffy could also use his ability to strangle someone's heart and no one would be the wiser on one hand, on the other, medical usage to reattach limbs possibly or stop fatal injuries to a degree.
You know what, I’d recruit karasu to my basketball team. So we have: 1.) Luffy 2.) Bellamy 3.) Sanji 4.) Kuma- center with awesome passing ability 5.) Doffy- cheating. Literally just to cheat 6.) Karasu- communication and bird’s eye view Oh and 7.) Yasopp or Usopp (for those threes)
I think it makes a lot of sense that Logia awakening is the persistence of their elements, whether on micro or macro scale. It covers both of what the Admirals did at Punk hazard and what Karasu is doing now. Maybe those elements also have small form of sentience. We saw that with Akainu's Magma Dog and even one of the attacks Aokiji did back in Marineford.
Karasu is one of my favorite designs and I really hope we see more and enough to the point I can play him in a game haha Like a pirate warriors or something.
0.0 soot prints, in situations of extremely heat and or fire. It can leave the permanent imprint of a image in an object. Shaping his soot makes a lot of sense, and being able to imbue them into object makes a sense as well.
On the topic of combo attacks with Sabo and Karasu, there is a phenomenon called a smoke explosion. It’s when fire ignites components of smoke that haven’t been entirely destroy by the fire. It then combines with the oxygen in the elevated space and often leads to an explosive reaction.

Another reason for why Karasu uses crows could be due to the many stories or mythos about why crows are black. I have seen many different stories online, but here's one I heard when i was little.( that i probably missremember) Of the all the animals of the world, none is more beautiful than the crow. With its feathers colored in every hue of the rainbow; none dare question its title. Proud did the crow perch above the creatures of the land, seeing none as its equal. Though as time went on the forest began to change. Snow was falling long past the end of winter and the animals that inhabited the forest became fewer and fewer. The crow fearing this winter would never end and that the animals would never see its feathers again. The crow picked up a branch and flew to the sun. After lighting the branch, the crow rushed back to the forest and melted all the snow. However, the "soot" from the burning branch and stained the feathers of the crow permanently black. The other animals rejoiced now that the snow melted and returned to the forest. The animals were happy that the forest was back but they noted something was missing. The crow, ashamed of its new feathers, hid its self away. Many of the animals, after seeing nothing but white snow for what felt like decades wanted nothing more than to see the spectacle of color that was the crow's feathers. For the crow it felt like nothing had changed after the snow melted as its loneness was still far to great. Thus it decided to show its self to the rest of the animals figuring it was better to laughed at than alone. But once the animals saw the crow, again they rejoiced as if the snow had melted twice. Happy that there friend. the crow, shocked by their response, asked don't you see my feathers. the have lost there color. A deer replied, I personally never cared for your colored feathers whilst you cawed at us from atop your perch. but now that you come us on equal ground I couldn't be happier to see you. something like that, sorry if its cringe. but yeah, tldr, crow make fire stick. "Soot" make crow black.

There is another devil fruit that functions similar to "Soot Soot fruit. In punkhazard smiley could turn into little pieces in order to cross the lake and also in EP:597, Cesar's battle with Luffy some of those pieces could act independently and they followed Cesar's orders to cling to Luffy's body. I was hoping Karasu's fruit would explain Smiley's case, but maybe it's something else. Loved the puns!
The first thing I thought of when I saw the Soot-Soot fruit was Dojo Kanojo Cho from Xiaolin Showdown; specifically the episode where he tries to establish what his power is, and after recognising he can't claim to have the power of fire (Kimiko's power), he says he has the power of soot, much to the amusement of everyone in the group. Little did they know the power that the soot holds haha!
Soot is ingredient of traditional Japanese ink and even can be used for painting on its own so I'm curious if this is mechanic how Karasu creates these crows. Also, soot is flammable and can be source of dust explosion with just a few sparks. Karasu and Sabo working together are extremely deadly.
Maybe there's an aspect of soot being carbon? so he's maybe trained to have a proficiency in making carbon-based life (eg crows) Thats complete headcannon but it could maybe explain how he's able to make living things and split his body up so well
Wasn't Moria able to shape his shadows into bats? I feel like that isn't necessarily the natural form of the shadows it's more of a moria flavor choice, I feel like it's the same for karasu
I like to think that carasu is the “doctor” of the revolutionaries and can create crows because he knows their exact anatomy. Since real crows have the capability to copy human speech and since he copies them perfectly, they can also speak
Doflamingo is another example of "streaching it" like, I understand that strings have to do with puppets, but being able to control people that well, or the string double, or even the bird cage. Those abilities have to do a lot more with Doflamingo's personality than with simple strings
@RealLifeIronMan smoke is carbon attached to gasses like oxygen, while soot is a build up of carbon particles. Soot can travel on smoke for a short time but it eventually attaches to a surface.
These past chapters makes me wonder even more about not just what every character will do in the final arc but what kind of Special or Big Moment they will have...
The idea of having logia devil fruits crafting different objects from is cool. Like I have different ideas: Smoker having smoked clones Akinu with magma golems
What i think is, that Karasu has transceiver "inside" the soot crows, that he can communicate through with his mask. That's why the speechbubbles are not coming from the beak but from the body.
I think that the Admirals rely mostly on the strength of their Devil Fruits, their pure nature like 'ice ages', volcanoes etc. Soot is a by-product of Magma and Fire itself so it's not a 'pure element', so that's probably more versatility for people. Imagine having a 'soot shadow', the espionage capabilities that could lead to, a soot crow sneaking into a location, picking up information and if anyone tries to search for anything, it hides in the shadows. Magma is too heavy and can't fly. Light has to go in straight lines or bounce off surfaces. Ice must make contact with something and might have a limit to where it can reach. Soot is almost as light as a cloud, but can also float. But if you look at what volcanoes can produce, soot, ash, magma/lava, fire and heat...it can cause lightning in certain cases and even acid rain. That's just my thought process.
I like to think that conventional Logia fruits ( a la Akainu, Aokiji, and Crocodile) have a more bare bones powerset because of them being primordial elements. Whereas Fruits like Caribou's Logia just happens to have a pocket dimension within it and Blackbeard's Dark Fruit being the exact opposite of what we've been shown of Logia. Maybe there are different classifications of Logia like how Zoans have Carnivorous, and Paramecia have "subclasses" within that category?
I understand that Karasus ability seems pretty unique, but its actually not completely out of the realm. Its not really different than seeing other abilities making clones of the user in a way. Weve seen plenty of examples of different Devil Fruit abilities creating sentient beings or even clones. Examples, Robin Hana Hana no Mi allows Robin to create clones and even larger limbs of her body, Crackers "Biscuit" Fruit power, he was creating literal sentient biscuit soldies on the spot, and even recently Prince Gruces Clay Clay Fruit, he was making sentient clay monsters. Im sure there are others Im forgetting. The communication through soot though is interesting though.
2:45 Actually it kinda is we if i remember saw this in the games. Tho in canon? I believe we actually saw smoker do this in logtown. We also saw it in Monet partly. It’s stated multiple times that skilled logias can make faux living things,turn other matter into their element.
I like to think that if Karasu summons too many crows, he could lose control over them and die, as he thins out too much the level of his own consciousness to divide among them, until there's not enough to control them individually, so that he would just lose it that way. But, if his fruit actually is about the "soot" material, then this scenario is probably not possible.
I think it's kinda fun that puns are viewed as lazy in the english language(esp the US) while (according to my teacher at least) they are viewed as creative in (at least some) german speaking countries. Gives context to the "germans don't funny"meme

I'm late to the video but does anyone else remember the game Bioshock Infinite. My favorite power on that game was called Murder of Crows, and as its name implied, it summoned a hoard of crows to peck your enemies to death. You could also set your crows on fire to create a lethal storm of flames and talons.

I think that crocodile has a bunch of control over his fruit like Karasu, if you remember “desert La spada” he made his sand like huge blades and sables pesado witch is like a urus shock
Karasu could have two abilities where he removes his mask and can 1. CAWs a soot shockwave as an offense attack and 2. Breath a miasma of soot (as you mentioned) which is provided crowd control.
We have seen someone separate a part of there body and be able to talk through it. It was kinamon when law cut him in half and he talked with farts, and I think karasu talking through the crows may be a similar random ability.
