A pipe attack is a 2nd or 3rd tempo attack to the back row attacker who’s in the middle of the back row. A 2nd tempo set is basically when the spiker starts their approach when the ball is at the peak of its pass, before the setter has started to set it. 3rd tempo is slower than that, the Spiker starts their approach before the setter has touched the ball but after it’s reached its peak, right before the setter touches it. And so on, 4th tempo is starting your approach after the setter has touched the ball and is starting to set it, so you’ll have to catch up to the ball in the air. And then there’s 1st Tempo, which is what Hinata does, when the Spiker starts their approach before the pass has even been touched to begin with. And then there’s also technically a Minus Tempo, which is just being at the peak of your jump when the Setter sets the ball, which is a lot tougher than you’d think.
