It's cool that you really study biomechanics, etc. alongside your art. It's amazing how much more you can accomplish when you know about your own body, and your opponents. I find myself with a greater body awareness which has helped greatly in figuring my own stuff out, but sometimes it turns into a hyperawarness that can stress you out. That's when you have to learn a more taoist balance, to be aware and mindful without becoming hypervigilant, without it taking over your whole thought process.

I'm a martial arts nerd. And I love to learn all kinds of martial arts. I was searching for someone who can teach martial arts in a interesting way and then I found Jesse Sensei. He is the best teacher I have every seen. Belive me guys. His techniques are very good. I followed his tips and it improved my karate a lot. If you are looking for a good karate teacher in youtube , then I'll highly recommend Jesse Sensei for you. He is so humble and simple and teaches so well. Yes. It is also essential to break down the mechanical segments of a strike. For example Backfist, 1) the wrist 2) elbow 3) shoulder joint 4) shoulder rotation/upper body 5)hips 6) knees 7)ankles. Isolation of each segment to impact target, Then combine & connect segments together. Then the WAVE from ground up😳 I believe you will enjoy adding this to your seminars. As always, thank you for your video.

great subject ! i always like learning more that will help my poor ageing creaky body get better . doing those scapular push ups really help . I was also thinking while watching and realised why the whole one inch punch that Bruce lee was well known for . The power of it comes from not just the hips ,but that slight extension from the scapula to give a few extra centimetres of reach . I used to practice it at work when nobody was around on an open heavy door . just by experimenting by the difference of not using it first by muscle power , then using it by body mechanics , the door of the security hut will bang shut much harder . unfortunately I had to stop when i did it with a bit too much and the clock fell off the wall and broke , that cost me the price of a new wall clock and a rather interesting questioning from my boss how it happened .

Jesse sensei, great video, and for me, specially your explanation about knee/feet/toes alignment at 6:10. I suffer from an old ankle injury (playing basketball 🏀 , not from karate 👊), which induced knee troubles... Always my knees droping in...and getting remarks when demostrating kata...😯💦. I tried your advice...and it works! No knee colapsing inward! I'm going to emphasize it in my training. Thank you!!!

I think one of the biggest takeaways I’ve had from sports science is how in general internal rotation is bad and external rotation is good like when you were talking about the knee/foot relationship in stances. That one simple concept goes a long way no matter what sport you’re practicing.

Great video once again, I have two questions. First what literature would you reccomend on biomechanics. Second and you may contact me directly if you dont want to post the info, but what does it take to book you for a seminar( advanced scheduling, cost, venue, and any other stipulations required)? I'd like to do some fundraising with my dojo mates and try to make that happen. Stay awesome my karate friend.

About extending the pushups. Is that your scientific analysis. When I lead pushups I talk the same speal but about speed and working on their punching speed. I do remind them to remember form and techniques and not get sloppy. But it works for me so it was my own personal story.

Haha, a good comparison with a mountain! If you are at the foot of the mountain, you have a big choice of techniques, but if you're on top you have no choice anymore and only one or two techniques that really work for a life. That's the point of karate! Love your channel Jesse, keep up that work! Ossu!

Love your videos Jess. I'm following you from quite a while. I'm not a black belt in anything, but I did practice many types of martial arts including Karate. However, I'm quite aged now and more interested in the theory of it. When I read the word Biomecanics, an image jumped inside my head, but I had to scroll through the video to make sure about it and I almost anticipated what the content is all about. Interesting, though, that image didn't go away. The image of restricted , semi mechanical, built for perfection Karate movements. Isolated, a Karate blow seems very dangerous, but if put into action (or movement), the same concepts that give karate moves its power and precision, are the (Achilles Ankle) of the art. Bottom of the line: it doesn't work in motion like other systems do (Boxing, Thai Boxing, wrestling, even Judo) It seems like karate was meant to be a stop motion picture rather than an animation... I hope I was able to explain what I mean. Cheers

Thank you Sensei for another great video! One thing, did you learn the physiology from Okinawan Masters? Or did you take some kind of medical classes or ? You see I have some issues with my body. I damaged my right knee in an accident when I was young. I have a broken PCL on right knee and fasciotomy on right calf (almost lost it from knee down), tho I am starting very late, I plan to be lifelong Karate student/practitioner. Many of the things you said in this video resonated with me, I really love traditional Shorin-ryu Shorinkan, and I am taking things slow when my body needs it. I am 43 and I have 1 year of Karate, but I plan for the rest of my days to be Karate days. I would really love to have my dojo join one of your seminars. Domo arigato

Your mountain analogy really stood out to me. I am hoping to study Sports Science this year and am very interested in biomechanics. You mentioned that you are coming to Ireland, where will you come to? Also, I do not practice Karate. However, I find your information and attitude to be outstanding and I think that you apply the philosophy of martial arts very well. At the top, one can see the shared traits and experiences, but mainly one can begin to understand the mountain range and not just one summit or peak. Thank you for your videos.

Yesterday I got into a fight and I did the crane position ready to do the crane kick. My opponent thought that I was crazy so he went all out. He ran towards my and jumped to do a superman punch. I did my crane kick and we both clash. I hit him and he hit me. We bother got knocked out but I manage to get up before him. I think I could have done better if I have landed the kick faster.

Jesse sensei, you said that martial arts is a big mountain. Yes, it's true. What a coincidence with the theory of the Chinese matial arts as I learned it when I was a kid. The theory in Chinese is: 「一山還有一山高」。Translation in English, it means that a high mountain would have a higher mountain behind. In other word, we should be humble & never thought of we are the best of others.

Thank you for the informative video! :3 I’d really like to join one of your classes one day. I‘m wondering what your opinion is on hyperlordosis created by low Zenkutsu Dachi. Because I really struggle with keeping my hips straight in such a low position. My hip flexor is really well stretched, but I still can’t fix my hips. Is it normal to some extend, that the back is bending a little bit when doing low stances? Or should I train my core stability more?

I'd really liked the part where you explain scapular stability and how it relates to ROM and being able to support the force of an actual punch. Do you think that a makiwara would be effective for this, or is that more for accuracy and joint conditioning? The scapular push ups are great, thanks for that. I've been relying on a rowing machine, but that's really for the pullback and ROM.

I did karate (Wado ryu) when I was in my twenties, but haven't been for about 25 years (I'm 48 now). I reached 2nd kyu back then, and now I'm thinking of returning, so have been trying to re-learn some of the stances, punches, blocks, kicks, katas, etiquette and terminology so I don't look a complete noob. One thing I'm really struggling with though is deep stances (and getting back up therefrom) - my knees just don't seem to be able to support me anymore, and if I go too low, they end up buckling. Any suggestions or good advice, such as recommended knee exercises? Great video by the way - it's fair to say that your videos (and those of sensei Ando Mierzwa) have been the inspiration for me wanting to return.
