I do not think that the techniques are poor. Those hook kick techniques are the techniques that are responsible for the majority of knock down situations in the karate competitions, the reason is that it is a stealth technique relying on speed and you just need a little kick in the head for knock-down. On the contrary those are the real competition techniques with real life applications. Also the take-down technique 1:30 is a competition proven technique.
