Kudo (Daido Juku) is an extreme Japanese martial art with headbutts, groin attacks and grappling. The founder was a Kyokushin Karate master and Judo black belt. Today I'm sparring a female champion to see how effective it is. Enjoy!

It reminds me of the Food Network show: Throwdown with Iron Chef Bobby Flay. Flay can kick @ss in the kitchen but the show was more about highlighting various masters within the context of their respective niches. Oftentimes, Bobby would "lose" the throwdown but he was always very gracious.

@@phanthomboy3 I had to relearn a lot. To punch with your shoulder covering chin, not lowered, to move in a different stance and in a different way - in Goju Ryu technique and movement were more fencing like Interesting, I had to learn again how to parry, despite it was the main way to defend in Goju Ryu. And I had to relearn a lot more... Of course, I learned how to punch and kick in Goju, conditioned my body and it was very helpful, but in general traditional martial arts are very different from combat sports Goju Ryu was very helpful when I learned fencing, because the way you move in Goju Ryu is almost the same as in fencing, and I'm saying about not only eastern kobudo, but also European martial arts Even logic in some Goju Ryu kata is very fencing-like For example you punch with lowered shoulders in karate to make your body like a strong rigid structure. Your have to maintain same structure with a longsword. You can't cut or parry properly with raised shoulders.

Ne-waza hasn’t gone anywhere. Modern judo has plenty of ground game, it’s just not in the regulation competitions because IJF hates Judo.

There is a variant of Judo called "Kosen Judo" which developed in the early 1900s at the technical universities (called Kosen in Japan). It is more focused on the Newaza and allow longer time on the griund the standard Judo ruleset. The origin of BJJ can be traced back to Kosen Judo. There is a trend to rediscover Kosen Judo.

Kano Jigoro was teaching Kano Jiu Jitsu in Kodokan on 1882 (Kodokan was founded on 1882) Kano Jiu Jitsu = Kitō-ryū (For throwing techniques) + Tenjin Shin'yō-ryū(Ne Waza) + Kano own inventions + Pro techniques took from other Ryu Maeda took up Kodokan Judo on 1895 The truth is Kosen schools started holding judo competitions in 1898 (before Maeda left Japan) ( Kosen Schools was practicing Kano Jiu Jitsu and original Kodokan rules) But, Kano Jigoro found that many of the weak students tended to do Pull Guard to avoid getting thrown, and of course a big amount of ne waza fights. Kano was mad about that (Jigoro Kano was reportedly unsatisfied with kosen rules, and was quoted in 1926 as believing that kosen judo contributed to create judokas more proficient at winning sport matches at the cost of being less skilled at self-defense.) That's why, Kodokan changed its competitive ruleset, restricting ground fighting and entries in 1925 and replacing draws for decision victories or yusei-gachi in 1929. So, after the rules were changed, there are two different rules, Kodokan rules and Kosen rules (original Kodokan rules) After the rules changed in Kodokan, Jigoro Kano gave Kano Jiu Jitsu a name as "Judo". So, what exactly that Maeda taught to Gracie was Kano Jiu Jitsu. Now, people are confusing about Kosen Judo and BJJ is because the Kosen Judo is still preserve its original rules that is similar to BJJ rules, that induces the emphasis on ground techniques.

A friend of mine competed in the Kudo World Championship in Japan twice. He told me about the helmet-gloves combination that a lot of injuries usually suffered are on the thumbs because of that design, more than on the knuckles like people may think. But anyway, Kudo is awesome: a perfect blend of Karate and combat sports.

I train Muay Thai and most people would say Muay Thai is the most effective striking for any scenario it's used... But recently I've taken notice to Karate and Kudo and how they have *distinctively* different style of kick and punches from the boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai general realm of which generally steer more towards Muay Thai for striking combat. It's so cool to see there is another equally effective, completely different answer to MMA combat, that is heavily underrated and has style! And that would include Kudo, Judo, Karate, and even Taekwondo elements.

@@iaindonald7302Same thing I’ve seen but instead of Kudo. I came into contact of Sambo FIRST because, later I was introduced into Kudo. Sambo is also very underrated especially in the US and the way they blended Boxing/Muay Thai into some crazy standing Judo/Wrestling throws is amazing.

Kudo, in my humble opinion, is the most effective version of Karate simply because they spar and pressure test more. I can even see a lot of the bunkai applications happening in real time as they fight.

Kyokushin and Uechi ryu are at least as effective as Kudo if not more, but it will depend on the teacher and yourself how strong you will get. But I think out of all karate styles these three are the best.

@@Greatshadowfighter kyokushin is DEFINITELY not more effective than Kudo. Uechi ryu depends on the school, but the vast majority can't hold a candle to it. Kudo is literally Japanese MMA on steroids. Not much else comes close.

True in some ways, I've done a bit of Kudo. Keep in mind that kata aren't for street fighting or sparring but for self defense. There's a difference.

@@Thq-ff8wz Well, then you obviously didn’t practice or know much of Kyokushin. It’s literally regarded as the most brutal and hardest style out of all karate styles, because unlike in Kudo they don’t have helmets and have any form of protection in fights resulting in very battle hardened body. The attacks are also way more devastating as in Kudo. Uechi ryu is the most self defense orientated karate style focusing solely on simple but maximal effective techniques. Kudo has more techniques and covers a wider range of techniques as the other two like ground fighting but it focused too much on the combat sport aspect rather than the martial arts aspect hence its inferior to Kyokushin and Uechi ryu, because like MMA it trains soll under a rule set Systeme which is not realistic in a real fight.

Ollie also wasn't wearing a gi, although his dominance was given by his higher level of grappling. Vilius does grappling techniques as part of kudo, Ollie trains jujitsu as a separate art. On top of that MMA background will also include way more wrestling.

@@loristronci4897 I like to look at it as a street fight/self defense and what will work better, obviously when you walking around or doing your everyday thing you not wearing gi, so I feel like it was more realistic. At the same time if those two had to meet in a street fight Ollie could've most probably gotten knocked out from the head kick if they weren't wearing a helmet.

@@loristronci4897 There's a huge span of variation when it comes to the experience and skills in grappling of Kudo ka and they'll acknowledge it. There are those with specific training in wrestling or judo or sambo (combat sambo rules also being similar to Kudo) and those with just enough to get by and they can stall on the ground. This instructor looked to be in the 60-isj percentile of that and/or he wasn't going whole hog.

@@tenpennygrim5884I wouldn't say so. This just looks like a regular spar. You can tell he is holding back but she is also holding back, but in a more natural/comfortable looking way imo. In sparring you are not trying to hurt your opponent badly, but intense enough to acknowledge and feel where things land etc. anyway just saying he didn't give her an easy win and that this looks like a regular spar imo

Thank you Jesse for introducing Kudo to a wider audience. I spent several years exploring different martial arts, but never finding one that fulfilled all my wants, until I came to Japan and discovered Kudo. For me it has been the perfect blend of traditional martial arts philosophy with modern practical fighting skills. Really good to watch Jesse Sensei and I love the mutual respect everyone has. It is very positive and Kudo seems to offer very good balance with old and new together retaining the Budo spirit. The Female Teacher is very humble and yet lethal with excellent rhythm and good mastering of space where to get out and in for strikes. I really enjoyed watching this video! Thank you!!

@@herbertrealtorImo she was also holding back in force of strikes due to it being a sparring match, in which you want to avoid hurting your opponent badly but also maintain speed etc. Overall great match between them either way, but don't wanna take much striking cred from the Kudo lady

geezuz, this is great. some rly kind words at the end and this is, for me, what i thinking by myself. im not a kudo guys, im into classic ("traditional") taekwondo but these just names for something, ive joined a lot of martial arts classes in the past, and also was 9 years into shotokan and if there is a place with good ppl and a good atmosphere i would stay, doesnt matter what stand on the shield above the entry. if this dojo would be around my corner i would like to visited and enjoy it. rly nice video, as always.

Damn, that helmet is really good, also for other styles of martial arts. I train pencak silat, we teach attack to the eyes as integral part of our moves. That helmet would provide a more realistic training!

I've never seen Jessie not go light. The man always hides his skills when he spars. He is incredibly nice and humble. It's only when you see him demo a technique or a weapon that he turns it on. And hot damn when he does.

How would you compare Kudo to Kyokshin, Jesse? I have been a Kyokshin practitioner for 42 years, started when I was 5 and now I am 47. There are obvious differences but they are using head protection, leg protectors and very thin gloves, something I am not used to at all, neither am I used to fighting on the ground, so that would be a very huge difference. Kudo evolved from Kyokushin so there are many similarities , particularly in the budo mindset and in the formal structure of training practice. However the inclusion of grappling and head strikes makes it technically very different. The fighting range, the type of strategies and techniques employed etc. are very different to Kyokushin. But for Kyokushin practitioners it is a very comfortable MMA style to transition into.

I’ve heard of Kudo, it looks like a bit of Muay Thai with the elbows. In fact it seems to resemble the very old school Kyokushin which including throwing, elbows and much more. The ‘modern’ Kyokushin is more knockdown sport oriented

The founder of Kudo, formerly known as Daido Juku was the late Azuma Sensei who ranked 3rd if I recall well in one of the world open championship. For some reason, Azuma Sensei did not find kata interesting so he removed them from Kudo/ Daido Juku and decided to allow punches to the face, but to avoid bruises and/or broken noses he introduced the helmet which is by far the best in the world right now. So Azuma Sensei was a great Kyokushin fighter in his youth before founding Kudo, no wonder you see common points between Kudo and Kyokushin. Interesting to.note that Shidokan Karate, also founded by a former Kyokushin Figther, Ueno Sensei also introduced some Judo elements in his Shidokan like Shido boxing with no helmet though and some ground work and throws.

@@notevenalex It absorb a lot of damage. It doesn't prevent KO if the strike is HUGE, but this kick would have KD him, if it wasn't for the headgear. Also Oliver really goes hard, when the Kudo guy went light on him, and was just trying to show him what style Kudo is. Also wearing a GI and not wearing a GI make huge difference.

I wanna say that just be simply watching your videos and ofc others in the martial arts community like Seth, wonder boy, icy Mike, Kevin lee, Jeff chan, Ramsey, rokas etc. watching all of you has giving me more of an understanding on the human body in terms of movement and fighting. Watching all the sparring training and technical breakdowns has made me body so much more usable, I haven’t taken much karate but I know boxing and your vids have allowed me to be able to handle my own agaisnt small time mma guys (no grappling) in the gym and just have fun fighting in sparring
