The Karelian Bear Dog (KBD) is a Finnish or Karelian breed of dog. In its home country, it is regarded as a national treasure. KBD will hunt a variety of animals. Its quick reflexes and fearless nature have made it very popular for hunting aggressive game, including bears, moose, and wild boar. It was the breed's ability to hunt and offer protection against a bear that earned the breed its name.

I was working up north in one of the oil fields up in northy in Canada, and whenever we had bear problems we had the bear dog guys that would come by with their Karelians. They'd use a male and female. Always in pairs. And those Bears would take off running. They take turns nipping at the Bears ass. They bear would spin then the other dog would take a bite until the bear was out of our work area. Pretty cool to see first hand.
@diane9247

The Washington State wildlife department has a team of Karelians to chase bears out of campgrounds and residential areas. Very effective! There is a YT video about them, which you can search.

I agree, Karelians in action is amazing. Animal control in Banff and Canmore use them to deal with bears and other large animals coming too close to campsites and towns. Scares the shit out of the bears and usually keeps them from coming back and needing to be put down.

My son has a Karelian, now about 12 years old. He's a total sweetheart, loves other dogs (lives with a lab and border collie). He's slightly aloof with people outside his family, but never aggressive. In his younger years he was a dedicated escape artist and would dash through the invisible fence (turned up full blast) to chase deer and once, even a bear. For the bear, he was gone for three days. No one knows what became of the bear. A couple of years ago he had the tip of his ear bitten off one night, probably by a raccoon he'd cornered. So, he kind of lost his perfect movie-star looks, but he doesn't care! He NEVER has a doggy smell, isn't demanding of attention, and is quiet and tidy around the house. Karelians are light eaters and love to dig a hole in snow to sleep in. He's been a great dog for the family.

He is an introvert in the dog world, the breed is often compared to cats. He never jumps up or demands attention. 😊

They're pretty different IMHO. The KBD is a much more energetic breed, smaller than an AA, barks more, and has a useable predatory instinct while the AA is larger, quieter, and lacks any real usable working qualities nowadays (IMHO). I've seen a small handful of AAs who can work, but they're hard to find.
@amyschumer9134
@amyschumer9134 7 лет назад
ive owned akitas for years and i definitely agree that the working class AA is virtually non existent in today's world. My current akita though, shes something else. Something strange happened to her genetically, shes about 62 lbs and the most athletic thing you will ever see, can put a border collie to shame with how fast she can change direction. Barks up a storm, hair line trigger prey drive, and protective. Reminds me of a dogo argentino in temperament. While shes obviously just a freak of nature i really wish i could instill her temperament in the general AA population (minus the barking) would possibly bring them back to the breeds former glory.

I grew up with a Karelian Bear Dog, my family was very lucky to get him, this is a rare breed and not alot here in the states. You might see some in Washington, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. True fact this is an aggressive breed especially towards other dogs, and complete strangers. You for sure need to introduce them to be around other dogs and people at a very early age. We did not do this with out dog, so our dog wasn't exactly friendly towards people and other dogs. We would literally have to pull his leash and hold on tight to it, to make sure he didn't go charging at anyone or their dog.

I believe the state of Washington uses kerelean bear dogs to chase away bears. I had two mixed with Karelian the mother and daughter. I can definitely tell the Karelian gene 🧬 was strong with both of my pups. They got loose be winter and the mom came back with a huge male raccoon 🦝 in her mouth. It had it by the throat and chocking it. I had to try and get her to let it go, which I finally did. They are definitely tough breed and fearless amongst other traits. Great video and great looking pup.

What are the purpose of yaks (if any) so I can find an excuse to get one cause they're so fluffy and cute that video of your dog playing with them had me melting! I dunno if we can get em here in Aus but I pretty much want one! Are they similar to goats where you need to get two or they freak out? Do they need lots of grazing space? What a lovely looking doggy. Such a elegant posture. Look at the hind legs, forelegs, and head posture. The chest area adds to overall handsome appearance, a bit husky like. Because of the karalian mouth shape he looks delicate pointy and non aggressive, so in a confrontation with say a bear, I imagine he would really have to be working with quite a large pack or quick human with gun.
@AnnaMarianne
@AnnaMarianne 10 месяцев назад
They work alone or in pairs, and the actual kill is made by the human hunter. The dog(s) locate the bear, pin it down and call the human to the spot, while herding the bear and preventing it from leaving. The dog is faster than the bear, so the bear never gets a bite, but the dog keeps nipping at the bear, making it mad. It's like a mongoose and a snake - the mongoose is too fast for the snake. Or you have two dogs dancing around bear, as the bear spins around to try to get the dog that bit it, the other dog takes a bite. They keep doing this until their human arrives, guided by their barking, and shoots the bear.

Nevertheless, the American Akita has not lost his hunting skills, and they do not charge. My boy sat still and waited for another dog to attack before I prevented embarrassment. Yet if he saw another dog first, he crawled toward his prey as a leopard would. A friend had a big show dog, who was attacked by a Doberman. The Akita crouched, locked and held the Doberman in the air, kicking and crying like a puppy. So, my first point holds. My second point is that you should have experience beyond reading online articles before you challenge a person with life experience.

Hey guys. We know almost nothing about this dog breed, but we live off grid in the Rockies at about 8,700' and we need a dog for bear protection. We had a large cinnamon colored black bear visit a few days ago, and shots in the air, close to it, our dog (Border Collie and Lab mix) didn't make any impression whatsoever on the bear. It just sat there while the dog barked her head off ten feet away. So, we were looking into this dog breed as a protection only. We don't hunt, and want to save the bear's life, so we would just want something to keep the bears at a distance. We have about a a mile distance to the closest place where there is a few cabins. We don't often have visitors, unless hunters trespass... We would like a dog that can scare a bear, but at the same time not hurt our chickens, cat, our other two dogs (the Border Collie and Lab mix and a huge (at least he thinks he is) 5 lbs Yorkie), etc. Would this be a good dog for us? I am a very strict person when it comes to dogs...and would train our new dog well.

A KBD would def run off bears, but they're a true predator and would probably become an issue around your stock. Perhaps consider an LGD breed instead, like a Kangal, Anatolian, Central Asian Shepherd, or even a Great Pyrenees.

I have owned a KBD for the last 7 years. Its the most awesome animal I have ever owned, yet not without its interaction problems. Keep in Mind KBD's are a primative species. they are called this because they are still 100% fully wolf as well as 100% fully dog, so they cannot be classed as either but as "primative species". You will have to deal with the wolf aspect of them and provide a firm, loving, worthy Alpha leadership. These dogs will test you in alpha leadrship and even deliberatly attack you to see how you will respond, as in able to defend yourself without causing them harm. You might bleed in that process. Just accept is as part and parcel of owning one as one day the bleeding will stop and they will settle down to fully accepting your alpha leadership without challenging it. If you have dogs thats a plus as the KBD will observe your dogs as you being their alpha leader and settle in much faster. if you have no dogs for them to follow pack mentality and your alpha lely out of the blueadership, well I myself went thro a 2 year period of bleeding almost daily in them testing me. DO NOT underestimate a KBD, they are highly intelligent and like a wolf if you upset them will not respond immediately but wil like a wolf plan on how to get you. Usually it will be at a time where there is nothing to hide behind, climb up and in an open area with nowhere to run, and they will explode on you on the turn of a dime and completely out of the blue. be prepared for it. I resolved this by turning their attack into a game buy playing with them by trying to grab their feet while in a play mode. it helped to dispell their agression and it showed them you did not fear and your alpha leadership was of the kind where you were strong enough to take an attack and find it interesting enough to simply play with them. they are not recommended for the general dog owner or trainer unless your prepared to learn about wolf behavior and apply that knowledge to them in handling them. They do socialise very well and now after much socialization my KBD is an absolute love slut who will whine at strangers to come pet him., socialising and petting him is in no way assuming alpha leadership so please nobody steal a KBD thinking they are big love sluts for petting, you assume leadership and you will have to prove your self worthy or you face a nightmare. I would recommend getting one, but be prepared to bleed in the process, show firm leadership, firm love for them and that you are tougher than them by deflecting any test they throw at you without harming them. always reaffirm your love to them and commitment to them, this helps them settle in .

Hi Alan, great write up and I couldn't agree more. I've bled plenty with my female, Meka, attacking with aggression. They are wolf like and do attack in the open where there is nowhere to run, definitely not for the timid dog owner. I agree, playing through her attack was key and she has a great deal of respect for me and our bond is stronger than I've had with any other breed I've had. That is a true benefit of the KBD, the bond grows over a longer period of time and you feel an intense connection. They are an intense breed. Recently we purchased a male KBD to work with our female. Her mentoring him has been a delight to watch as they are both growing very close. They will work as a team and appear to love to work together to patrol our property. The challenge will be when he reaches about 7 months when his teenage years set in and we will be challenged. I expect to bleed again and will love every minute of it.

I didn't realize that Leika was a breed name. For many years, due to how Isaac Asimov used it in his haunting short story about Russia's space dog, I presumed that Leika was an individual pet dog's name. Writers!!🤔

I likes all your vids. But a little bit of structure would go a long way. How about a few standards questions? Size, temperament, etc.

Oorang Airedales are great hunting dogs.... but they tend to be quiet hunters... Hounds get the animal cornered and Airedales go in and attack... bears, pigs, cougars... they are totally unafraid ...and SMART!

Neighbor has a female named Pumpkin really good natured around people and does get along with other dogs. I've only seen it get aggressive once with another Lab mix pinned the other dog by the neck in a fraction of a second when it snarled and bared it's teeth at her.

My husband always wanted a bear dog, but could not get one. Instead he got a mutt that was half timber wolf, part Rottweiler and part Malamute and trained it to keep bears away.
