Boy, I remember this quite well. I was 14 at the time and in junior high. A lot of these TV anchors from the L.A. TV stations shown on this video are all retired. Gosh, how times have changed!
Very sad to a gifted young girl what a voice and a talented drummer why can’t people let them be and stop criticising what she wore their music and all other negative things towards them things may have been different They were both talented and that’s just a fact silence is golden and she and her brother are always be a part of musical history and that can’t be changed
I've definitely like her voice since when I'm listening to the songs of The Carpenters... Rest In Peace, Karen Carpenter. (March 02, 1950 -- February 04. 1983) WE MISS YOU AND ALSO YOUR DRUMMING PERFORMANCES!!!
Hard to believe it's been 30 years since her death. I, like millions of her fans, loved her voice. As I watched this compilation of news coverage of her death I grew sadder and sadder. Every time Richard was shown giving comfort to others at the funeral service, when his own personal pain must have been so severe, I really wanted to cry. As sad as it is to watch, I thank you for posting this. Life is precious, and many times, far too short. RIP Karen. I am still listening.
I was three when she passed, but my folks used to play their music all the time growing up. As a matter of fact "We've Only Just Begun" was their wedding song
I was about ten or 11 when I heard we’ve only just begun. I remember thinking that the song was so hopelessly nieve it couldn’t help but end badly. That’s very cynical for a child that age. Now I love it
Karen died of anorexia and those doctors knew what she died of!! They did the 2ed Autopsy to see why it affected her heart and why her heart actually stopped beating!
She didn’t die in the bedroom. Her mom found her laying unresponsive on the kitchen floor at 8:50 am. Her cause of death was Emetine Cardiotoxicity due to Anorexia Nervosa. (Basically an overdose of ipecac-which is also the reason why her blood sugar was 1,100).
If Karen had lived I believe she’d have eventually done a religious album and had a late career resurgence the way Anne Murray did. It’s ironic that Anne did hers in response to her daughters anorexia nervous. Thank heaven we know so much more about the disease now
I do not know the carpenter family and three of them are dead. I found it interesting that Karen had middle aged parents at a time when couples tended to marry and have children at an earlier age. Is it possible that Agnes never really wanted more children after Richard and may have resented Karen. Whatever her failings as a parent she did not deserve to lose a daughter that way. If Karen had lived an ordinary life she would have gone to college and then married and had her own family. Perhaps the issues with Agnes would have worked their way out. Once we have children of our own we learn that we are not the perfect wives and mothers either. I saw an old clip of Karen interviewing with Olivia Newton John. She has a bad perm trying to add volume to her hair because it’s probably falling out. Her weight is most unhealthy. She’s talking very rapidly and just rambling. Livvy looks embarrassed for her. Is it possible she had an untreated bi polar disorder and was self medicating with food. She wasn’t going to use drugs or alcohol. Her voice was so warm and intimate we all felt like she was singing just to us. We all wondered what we might have done to help
From what I read that is not 100% true. Her doctor in NY never received a call from Karen's parents. Richard has said that the family were in constant contact with Karen during her treatment. However, both Richard and his parents disliked the treatment she was receiving and felt no need to speak with the doctor
They actually went to Steve Levenkron's for a family meeting, but it didn't go very well. Agnes didn't think much of psychotherapy from what I have read.
No one can really comment on what the parents did or didn't do. Unless they were in the room with them 24/7 then no one knows. Speculating isn't helpful
Her body went bad. Okay? She needed “refrigeration.” (Food!) Instead, she sat outside in the sun with the flies and turned into cottage cheese. She expired!
Personally did not like her body under sheet thrown in back roughly then viewing of her body Awful Now her controlling mother with her same place Karen couldn't escape Agnes for peace in death.
In defense of the carpenter family Karen was famous long before the Rebecca Schaffer anti stalking laws. There were a lot of strange people coming around Karen and there was no law to prevent it. They may have tried to keep her at home and control her life out of some misguided attempt to protect her. She was past the point where that was healthy for her. Had she not become so famous at such a young age they might not have been so over protective
they let her do her own thing and always let her stay at their home when she wanted. it was a long time ago. i reserve judgement on the parents, they looked average to me for that time.
She literally threatened her daughter when she wanted to leave home. It's literally in little girl blue and implied by friends she wasn't a great mother.
