This is a recording of news reports on Australian television about the passing of Karen Carpenter, also included are interviews with Richard Carpenter on Australian tv later that year as he promoted his tribute album to Karen (Voice Of The Heart) in Australia. Richard plays a lovely heartfelt version of "Yesterday Once More" on the "Don Lane" tonight show.

Thank you so much for this. When Karen died I was on a bushwalking holiday and missed all the media coverage and feel like I will be mourning forever. She will always be my favourite singer. No-one else comes close. I have so much admiration for Richard. Not just for his musical genius but his resilience. I can't imagine what it must have been like to lose both your only sibling and your professional partner. He is always so honest and down to earth when interviewed. We also owe him a lot for his efforts to keep Karen's musical legacy alive. It is great that young people today are discovering the magic of the Carpenters sound. p.s. That's the first time I've seen the Beechwood video clip!

@suerosalie It was pretty amazing seeing the Beechwood clip. It's the first time I've ever seen Karen Carpenter in a video clip. Richard also said that the album was only around 20-25% completed at the time she died, so I was sort of amazed the was in the video clip of a finished track. There must be more to the story.
@annajacob7981
@annajacob7981 2 года назад
@@gilbydog7350 Imho, there IS more to this story. First and foremost, their heartless mother was the primary driver of Karen's emotional issues and the resulting anorexia nervosa. Secondly, Richard did almost nothing to help Karen. Jealous of her understandable star billing, he hid in the shadow of 'knowing', while never willing to really help or (now) speak the truth.

It's so sad to hear Richard playing "Yesterday Once More" without Karen being there to sing it.

I went into a week's isolation following Karen's death. Quite unable to handle the shock. Her voice was magical and I must admit, I loved her.

My father was a teenager in the early 1980s. He loved the Carpenters and still does, but would never admit to any of his high school buddies that he liked it. Back then the Carpenters were considered "squeaky clean" and corny. Dad was 16 when the news dropped that Karen passed away. "Was a real shocker" he told me. I'm glad that Karen has recieved posthumous love and attention, her voice was truly something, hell, *she* was truly something. Just a shame that she never grew old and happy.

if you were deaf, her smile would make music for you to hear. she did not just sing a song , she lived a song......few artists have reached that depth......knowing her only once for a short time, she was remarkably real......and the greatest compliment i gave her was how well she played her drum solo...{her ...drum solo] three hugs and a kiss for that > a moment of forever .... with a wonderous woman , and a remarkable artist........tears and smiles bring pictures of karen.

It was the most recent Carpenter's clip available to the Australian media at that point.(the record bombed in Australia, but was #10 in New Zealand). I saw this interview when first broadcast. I suspect the clip was shown at that point to allow their guest to compose himself a little, as Richard then got to watch his deceased sister, I d'ont think it helped a great deal.

Hmmm, Richard, "Karen was there".. but not in your heart apparently. You didn't say so. Was this album release just a money making deal? Most important, when will you give Karen the genuine praise she deserves for her extraordinary voice? She was the 99% reason why the Carpenters succeeded.

Yeah. I've thought that so many times that, passing at 32 years old, she was just beginning to step into that next phase of life where you really can catch your groove and develop into much more than you'd dreamed during the younger years. I think, as excellent as those early years were for them (1969 - 1980), she would have gone on to do Broadway. She had mentioned that in some interviews that she wanted to go in that direction. She certainly had the skills for it. Ugh. Her life was cut too short. Ugh! Bless her.
