As a little kid in the early 1970s, the Carpenters single handedly captured my heart beyond anything else in my life at that time! For this, I am forever in gratitude for all their beautifully uplifting, wonderfully arranged and intoxicating music!!! Quite honestly, there has never been anything as lovely or original as this, in the history of all of music. It's hard to put into words, but it never ceases to make me feel!!! God bless you Karen and Richard Carpenter! And to all who love the Carpenters.

I totally and completely agree with you!!! She has and always will have the best female voices in the world. She is one of my idols and always will be. Karen Carpenter and The Carpenters are the best!!

You can't honestly listen to Karen's vocals in a song like 'Rainy Days and Mondays' or 'Superstar' and say that there isn't such deep and aching emotion there. She truly is living those songs... yes, you could never call her a 'soulful' singer as she was far too subtle vocally for that. In Karen's case, the emotion that sprung forth from her vocals almost seemed unintentional or subconscious, which makes it all the more touching and genuine. Janis is an absolute legend, but so is Karen.

It would be interesting to see this show in it's entirety to see who the other women were as well. Karen still will be one of my favorites when it comes to honesty, purity and originality in singing...

Respectfully, I disagree. Karen absolutely DID live each and every song she sang, albeit a lot more subtly than Janis. That is what makes her so incredible. On the surface she had a stunningly beautiful and sweet, yet rich and low-toned voice. Yet listening to her voice, there is such emotion and vulnerability, hope and wistful happiness, it really touches all who love her voice so much. There is a reason Karen is revered as one of the greatest by so many, including Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon.

Karen never really sang Rock per se, but who knows what could have been had she lived. She loved the Beatles which might have provided a little wiggle room for an album of say, classic Beatle love songs or some of their milder R&R hits.

If Karen was #6, I wonder who the hell #s 1-5 were?

F**k off out of it! Janis had an incredible raw bluesy voice but she never came close to the technical perfection and quality of Karen, Dusty, Mama Cass, the ABBA women etc. Those women had voices that were true instruments... and they raised the act of singing a song to a sheer form of art. There is more to being a rock singer than grunting, groaning and screaming. Janis may be 'cooler' than Karen, but a better singer? Hell NO!
