Karen Anne Carpenter (March 2, 1950 - February 4, 1983) was an American singer and drummer who with her elder brother Richard performed as the duo the Carpenters. With a distinctive three-octave contralto vocal range, she was praised by her peers as a great vocalist. Her struggle with and eventual death from anorexia would later raise awareness of eating disorders and body dysmorphia.
The Carpenters were one of the biggest-selling American musical acts of all time. Between 1970 and 1984 brother and sister Richard and Karen Carpenter had 17 top 20 hits, including "Goodbye to Love", "Yesterday Once More", "Close to You" and "Rainy Days and Mondays". They notched up 10 gold singles, nine gold albums, one multi-platinum album and three Grammy awards. Karen's velvety voice and Richard's airy melodies and meticulously crafted arrangements stood in direct contrast to the louder, wilder rock dominating the rest of the charts at the time, yet they became immensely popular, selling more than 100m records.
On February 1, 1983, Carpenter saw her brother for the last time and discussed new plans for the Carpenters and resuming touring.[c] Three days later, on February 4, Carpenter was scheduled to sign final papers making her divorce official. Shortly after waking up on that day, she collapsed in her bedroom at her parents' home in Downey. Paramedics found her heart beating once every 10 seconds (6 bpm). She was pronounced dead at Downey Community Hospital (now PIH Health Hospital - Downey) at 9:51 a.m.
Carpenter's funeral was held February 8, 1983, at Downey United Methodist Church. Approximately one thousand mourners attended, including her friends Dorothy Hamill, Olivia Newton-John, Petula Clark and Dionne Warwick. Her estranged husband, Thomas Burris, also attended and placed his wedding ring into her casket. Carpenter was buried at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, California. In 2003, her body was moved along with those of her parents to a private mausoleum at the Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village, California.

When I was a very young child, there was a brother and sister singing group that lived in the house directly behind ours. I would fall asleep hearing them play and sing until late in the evening. I loved when they played. Later in life I became a high school choral director, and taught thousands of children the gift of music and the art of singing. My singing neighbors? The Carpenters. The home was a small home in Downey…and where they started. Where I started.

That house was torn down and I am looking for photos of it. Richard said it was a storybook house. Can you see if any of your family photos captured this house at all? Was your house torn down for the freeway also? Do you have photos of the street at all?
@shellye7052
@shellye7052 8 дней назад
@@tabby1412 My house was not torn down for the freeway, but our next door neighbors’ home was. When my parents heard the plans of taking homes for the freeway we sold our house and moved. The Carpenter’s house was directly behind ours, so should not have been torn down. Unfortunately I don’t have pictures of our street, or theirs. We lived on Premiere.
@tabby1412
@tabby1412 8 дней назад
@@shellye7052 Thanks. Richard said the address was 13024 Fidler which is on the other side of Premier and the street cuts off at 13028. If his memory is correct, it looks like the next block is gone. But he may confused about why that block was razed. There's a wall there so you can't see what's behind it. The fact that he described it as a storybook house is what interests me. It would kind of stand out in that neighborhood and they have so many photos at the other homes, but not this one.

Actual Fact: Karen and a friend or Manager were leaving a Californian restaurant back in the 70's, before they exited JOHN LENNON came in and spotted Karen, walked upto her and said 'Just wanted to tell you love I think you've got a fabulous voice!'. Karen couldn't believe what was said and asked her friend did that really happen. Rest assured it did in response as Karen was experiencing lack of self-confidence at that time. Good work Scott.

One of a kind voice. Almost 40 years later and I haven’t heard another that comes close. There is a silver lining in that before Karen Carpenter no one (outside the medical profession) had ever heard of Anorexia or Bulimia. Her death brought much awareness to this type of illness. I had a very hard battle with anorexia when I was 16 till I was 22 years old. I was bullied bad for my weight all my life and I thought I could control this and I also went through other things in my life that messed me up so I needed to lose weight. I had 4 near death experiences from my eating disorder and 1 my heart stopped beating. I was in and out of treatment but outpatient treatment and the help of a ED physiologist, nutritionist and my family support after therapy helped. I’m now 39, married, and alive.

I also had this disease. Today I can no longer imagine wearing children's clothes. Too bad that many and also Karen Carpenter have lost the fight. It is an uphill battle to beat the disease. By my side was and still is my husband, who has been a great help to me. Patients from this disease need good medical care and a strong partner or friends. My mother was not a big help, she even announced that I had anorexia at some point. I was still underweight and wore child size clothes. She later said that she had been a great help to me. *Wrong: My husband had been the biggest help* Not to look away, to act respectfully and to bear responsibility when a person is affected by this disease. When I hear a song by Karen Carpenter I sometimes cry because I lose my composure. She has lost the fight against this terrible disease. Karen Carpenter could sing really well and her music is timeless. I can't sing and I am often sad because Karen Carpenter could sing and lost the fight against this disease. But I won the fight against this disease. Why? Yes I know it sounds weird reading this, but Karen Carpenter deserved a chance to fight this disease. From the bottom of my heart, I wish Karen Carpenter had won that fight too. Sometimes when I listen to her music, I am left thinking: "Why did I survive this and Karen Carpenter didn't have this strength, will and chance!". The music is timeless, it's just that sometimes I need time, to listen to the music without crying.

I think Karen Carpenter died not even realizing how bad her disease was. I grew up listening to The Carpenters, I have many great memories with their music. She was actually very young when she died but looked older because of her illness. I had anorexia in my 30s, not really realizing it at the time. All I knew is I wasn't eating anything, I kept losing and going down sizes until I got to a size zero, and as this was happening people kept telling me how good I looked. Then one day I went to see a good friend I hadn't seen for a few years, she opened the door and the first thing she said to me was, oh my God, you've lost too much weight! And at that moment I thought wow, I actually felt scared. It woke me up. I ended up going up a few sizes after that. I never did get help for it, because I still hadn't recognized it at that time. I was never into bulimia or laxatives. I was starving and exercising on an empty stomach. I think doing all that ruined my gallbladder I ended up having to have my gallbladder out.

One of the most beautiful voices to ever come out of the music world. A great drummer, too!! Grew up listening to their music, especially their Christmas album during the holidays. Great upload, Scott!! Thank you for keeping her memory alive. 🕊️🙏❤️ Hope your birthday was awesome!!! 😎 We cut our wedding cake to "We've Only Just Begun." Miss my late husband every single day. 🕊️❤️🙏

Scott, this one moved me a bit more. I adored the Carpenters. Karen sang so beautifully that her death made the world seem darker. No words are sufficient enough to thank you for taking us back. “ It’s yesterday once more” ❤️🙏🏻🦋

I knew this was going to be a ripper before watching it. Still have the Vinyl LP with the house (in Downey) on the cover. A precious possession for sure. Flashback to my 9 year old self, starting piano lessons in 1970 and learning Carpenters songs as they came out in real time. Again I say thank you Scott for the memories.

I'm 61 and grew up listening to her beautiful voice. I have been to her final resting place. Her brother lives only a couple of miles from there. BTW Scott my first time watching one of your videos was your trip to Pacific Grove and John Denver's memorial there. I'm sure that if there is a heaven Karen, John and Olivia are singing together again.
