Michael Landon (born Eugene Maurice Orowitz; October 31, 1936 - July 1, 1991) was an American actor and filmmaker. He is known for his roles as Little Joe Cartwright in Bonanza (1959-1973), Charles Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie (1974-1982), and Jonathan Smith in Highway to Heaven (1984-1989). Landon appeared on the cover of TV Guide 22 times, second only to Lucille Ball.
Michael Landon was born Eugene Maurice Orowitz, on Saturday, October 31st, 1936, in Forest Hills, Queens, New York. In 1941, he and his family moved to Collingswood, New Jersey.
In high school, Landon worked a number of odd jobs and small roles to make ends meet and decided that acting was for him. However, he thought that his real name was not a suitable one for an aspiring actor, and so "Michael Landon" was born.
Two of his first big roles were as Tony Rivers in I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) and as Tom Dooley in the western The Legend of Tom Dooley (1959). That same year he was approached by producer David Dortort to star in a pilot called The Restless Gun (1957), which was renamed when the series was picked up to Bonanza (1959). Landon played Little Joe Cartwright, the youngest of the three Cartwright brothers, a cocky and somewhat rebellious youth nevertheless had a way with the ladies. For 14 years, Landon became the heart and soul of the show, endearing himself to both younger and older viewers, and he became a household name during the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1968, after almost ten years of playing Little Joe, he wanted an opportunity to direct and write some episodes of the show. After the season finale in 1972, Dan Blocker, who played his older brother Hoss and was also a close friend, died from a blood clot in his lung, after gall bladder surgery, but Michael decided to go back to work, revisiting his own character in a two-part episode called "Forever."
Bonanza (1959) was finally canceled in early 1973, after 14 years and 430 episodes. Michael didn't have to wait long until he landed another successful role that most TV audiences of the 1970s would thoroughly enjoy, his second TV western, for NBC, Little House on the Prairie (1974). That show was based on a popular book written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and he played enduring patriarch and farmer Charles Ingalls. Unlike Bonanza (1959), where he was mostly just a "hired gun," on this show he served as the producer, writer, director, and executive producer. By the end of its eighth season in 1982, Landon decided to step down from his role on "Little House" as he saw his TV children grown up and moved out of their father's house, and a year later, the show was canceled. After 14 years on Bonanza (1959) and 8 years on Little House on the Prairie (1974), it was about time to focus on something else, and once again, he didn't have to wait too long before Highway to Heaven (1984) came along. Unlike the western shows that he did for 23 years, this NBC fantasy/drama show focused on Jonathan Smith, an angel whose job was to save peoples' lives and work for God, his boss. Victor French played ex-cop Mark Gordon, who turned down a fortune but had redeemed himself by meeting Jonathan.
By the end of the fifth season in 1989, French was diagnosed with lung cancer and died in June of that same year. Landon was devastated by the loss and pulled the plug on Highway to Heaven (1984). In early 1991, after 35 years of working on NBC, he was axed by the network, so he moved to CBS to star in the pilot of a two-hour movie, Us (1991), in which he played Jeff Hayes, a man freed from prison by new evidence after 18 years wrongfully spent inside. This was going to be another one of Landon's shows but, in April 1991, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He later appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962) to talk about his battle with the disease, and many people in the audience were affected by the courage and energy he showed. Unfortunately, he was already terminally ill by that time, and on Monday, July 1st, 1991, after a three-month battle, he finally succumbed to the disease. His family, his colleagues, and his children were all by his side. His life-time: Saturday, October 31st, 1936 to Monday, July 1st, 1991, was 19,966 days, equaling 2,852 weeks & 2 days.
Landon was interred in a private family mausoleum at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery, in Culver City, California.

I watched Landon's final interview from the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. By that time he knew he wouldn't be alive for much longer but he didn't let his cancer get the best of him. I'll always admire his bravery as he battled cancer.

You just absolutely summed it up on what I was thinking. Highway to Heaven was my go to show in my childhood. Children in this day and age should be subject to this heartfelt way of life and the lessons it teaches. Praying that they can recreate a newer version similar to this just to teach right from wrong again.. Michael Landon always pulled my heart strings.. Miss him dearly!

This one was an emotional one for me. We watched all of his shows from Bonanza on. Sadly, my father passed of pancreatic cancer about six years after Michael. My oldest brother and I got involved in research at John Hopkins as the Landon family worked with the hospital to fund many studies at this hospital including trials to see if it was hereditary. My brother was so sure he was going to get it but he died of leukemia at 53. Michael was a great actor and so handsome and he just had the special something that made you feel good just watching him. Gone but never forgotten! 🌻💞💜

Michael Landon was everyone's Pa! An incredible actor, director and producet! My first memory of Michael Landon was "lil Joe" on Bonanza. We tuned in every week, it was one of my Dad's favorite shows. I loved it for the horses, l! We had about 30 at any one time. My Dad raised Palomino Quarter Horses in the 1970's to about 2000, when he officially retired. He always had a few horses around till his death in 2011. When Little House on the Prarie became a tv sensation in the 1970's, we as a family tuned in to watch. I remember my own Mom going over what the weeks lesson on Little House was all about. I think Michael Landon did as much to raise us, as our parents did. Bringing lessons on almost any subject. Even drugs, which was taboo, at the time. It was my first memory of anything drug related. In turn, when reruns came on as I raised my kids, we'd watch. Although sometimes my kids bulked as they got older. My youngest daughter at the time was busy watching 16 and Pregnant. I would watch it with her and point out all the immaturity of the girls! I reminded her that 75 to a hundred years ago, girls at 16, had kids all the time. They were mature, raised kids, ran a house, a family garden and worked from sun up to sundown. They never complained. They lived life everyday as it came. These spoiled, immature girls complained everyday all the time about everything! 16 and Pregnant is all drama, no substaince. It's a bad way to teach kids about life, lol! I'll always be grateful to Michael Landon for years of quality, family sensible tv. Those days are pretty much gone.....but once in awhile you'll find him on late night-early morning tv. Jill

I'm 58 and in the last few years I've lost my mom my younger sister my dad and my aunt and two of my uncles and a bunch of friends and all of them either died from heart problems or cancer and it really makes you obsess on your own mortality. I loved him he was such a great actor. I grew up in Orange County. I left California in 2008 but it was fairly common to run into famous people. My 25-year-old twin daughters were in a movie they filmed when they were seven turning eight years old it was so much fun. I was also on the movie set for Friday after next with ice cube. I was a limousine driver for awhile for some friends of mine. Our pink limo was pinkies limo in the movie. And my boss/friend Richie was friends with Tommy Lasorda and his wife Jo and sometimes Jo would call me asking for a ride to the doctors office when her husband was out of town. She had had knee surgery at the time. I think this was around 2002 to 2003 she was so sweet.

It tends to strike a little too early in peoples lives, cutting their lives way too short. RIP Michael Landon, you were loved and respected in life and that love continues now.

This has to be my favourite video about Michael Landon. I've seen videos of his grave before, but I've never seen his house, except for the video he did himself announcing his condition. Spooky he passed at 54 as did Victor and also James Troesh, who also appeared on Highway to Heaven, he was 54 too. I still watch Little House to this day. I have all episodes on DVD and I just love it. Thank you so much for doing this. Great video 😊

I knew it had something to do with Little House on the Prairie. He also played in a movie way before Bonanza called I was a Teenage Werewolf. I think that the inspiration of Teen Wolf. I can't get over how many people are buried there and all the other cemeteries many other celebrities are buried in. I remember Michael Landon best on Little House but I didn't get into the series when Mary became Blind all the way up to the final season. I didn't remember the earlier episodes because I was a baby but I did watch the reruns over the years as I got older. That and The Waltons. R.I.P. Michael Landon.🌹💔🕊

Thank you so much for making this well put together and highly respectable content Michael Landon was one of my heroes when I was about 5 years old then I found out he was sick when I was 9 years old I didn't understand how serious it was and when he died it felt like I lost a family member I must have cried for 5 days it felt like I lost an uncle. But this video brought back great memories thank you so much for a great video.

He's been gone a long while now. I didn't know his son passed away & young as well at 60 years old. I like what Michael said, that if you're going to beat something you can't do it from standing in a corner. Pancreatic cancer is one of the worst cancers (all of them are bad of course). It made me think of the TV commercial from ex-president Jimmy Carter who had most of his family members pass away from this cancer & he told the viewers to go the doctor for early detection (bless him)

Thank you so much for this video, Scott. I started watching The Little House on the Prairie again because German television broadcasts it these days. It's exactly like TL freeland says. You can escape all the bull cr*p that happens in the world for a while with that show. Every episode carries a positive message. Michael is a legend. May he rest in peace. Greetings from Germany!

I only watched in the evening and into the night. Oh, I think this show was one of the greatest parts of my childhood, seriously! How I understood & appreciated each character, and so sad that only a few remain. I loved them all!!! Thank you, Scott for your respect of the man and his family! I needed this!!! 🌼 Rest in Peace, Michael 🌹

Astounded to be reminded at just how young he was when he died, he did so much in that short time. Such good, family entertainment, clean with lessons on morality. Not only tgat, when you rewatch his shoes they were well writren, well scripted and we'll acted. Some shows I rewatch and am a little embarrassed that I used to like them. Not so with Michael Landon. They are as good to watch and learn as when they first aired. Thanks for this, loved him!

It's sad to realize Michael Landon died at 54, now that I'm days away from turning 56. He was stricken and taken from us way too soon in life. To have accomplished so much in 30ish years on screen is astounding. My mom's fear of werewolves came at the hand of Landon's 1957 flick "I Was A Teenage Werewolf". Thanks for another respectful visit to the resting departed, Scott. I'd ride shotgun and kick in on gas money with you any time!
