It’s not a crime but if there’s a crime in the area then an investigation is ongoing and if you’re acting suspicious, then you open yourself up to a search. If you’ve done nothing wrong, then showing an id should never be an issue. It’s only an issue for criminals.

13:24 Dear Karren Go Burrr, please learn the law before you go talking out of your butt. unless your state is a stop-and-ID state, police cannot get your ID just because you look sus, they have to be able to articulate a crime that has or reasonably suspected will be committed by the suspect. if they can not, they do not have authority to detain or ID you. it called a terry stop and they can only detain you for the investigation for as long as reasonable (reasonable in the eyes of the law being something that would be understandable to the common person) to either confirm or dissipate suspicion. in this case, being that the two cops could not discover a law to charge him with other than they find him sus, this detention and then arrest was unlawful.
