no wonder she can speak well in British English because she can speak well also in other languages such as Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, and French. She is Eurasian: her father is half-Chinese and half-Welsh, while her mother is half-Chinese, quarter-Iranian, and quarter-German...
actually i enjoy looking at how what she wears on all sorts of occasion, formal informal, on her blog. i don't think she's a tall lady in real life, yet she carries her outfits SO well!!
She attended United World College of the Adriatic near Trieste, Italy from 1987 to 1989, and majored in Italian literature when studying at the University College London, University of London.
Her English is amazing, it is great because i cant speak Cantonese or Mandarin if one day i ever met a famous actor/actress i might talk to him in-person
i know it's been nine years and i don't know if you're still with this account, but your comment is inspiring to hear these days... and I hope your dream came true.
she was educated under a british system , that's why she's good at speaking english a a brit accent when she was in HK, she studied in diocesan girls' school(the skl that got the most 10As last year). and she went to UK after she graduated from junior school
@MrFeelsogd She doesn't look Eurasian? That is odd, given that she is Eurasian and both of her parents were only 1/2 Chinese. Her real name is Karen Morris, not exactly a Chinese name, is it?
@Rab1975bit to be honest i would find it quite awkward if scmp interviews are conducted in chinese instead since hey, its an english newspaper afterall.. i do agree that there should be chinese subs though cus as you've said, it seems to be quite isolating.
A lot of focus seems to be on her English accent and her looks. Well, apart from being 50% Chinese she's also partly Persian, so the Welsh and German parts of her genes really don't stand a chance of dominating. ;-) As for language, as someone pointed out she also masters Mandarin and was apparently awarded for best Mandarin album and best Mandarin female singer for 2009(for the album Hui Wei I guess).
i think she was given an exceptionally privileged education and her family seems to be well--off on both sides of her parents, to be able to send her to schools that allow her develop an upper-class level British accent. Just because England owned Hong Kong doesn't mean that everyone from Hong Kong had the same level of education and noone really has a British accent when they speak English. Just look at the case with other countries like Singapore and Malaysia.
oh please, a person is not less chinese when they know how to converse in other languages, have other influences in arts, music, fashion. she seems balanced.
she does not look caucasian at all, more like a typical cambodian, that is why it makes a strange impression when she speaks english well since it is not very common among asian celebreties.
she is getting paid much money for acting, if you got money for sounding intelligent or well educated , would not you spend much time repeating the same sentences again and again infront of a mirror and a talking counselour?
Tbh I agree, she sounds arrogant and fake. I don't know why she's famous at all. I don't think she was spectacularly good in any roles, just lucky to have been in some good/famous movies. Her singing's pretty average, her looks are average, her fashion sense is average. The only reason she's famous from what I can tell is that she got to model for a few ads that were in prominent places.
