For the 1st story, the fact that the officer said that no criminal activity happened is false. When the hotel contacted her to bring back the car immediately when she was no more than a few minutes away, after a while that she doesn't, that's theft, especially after half an hour or so. She burnt up nearly all their gas which is basically gold nowadays and littered in their property with trash. The officer just didn't want to track her down to rightfully charge her after she left.

You most definitely can charge a service fee for a service dog.

There should be a national database for Service Animals with microchip information. At least 6 states have instituted penalties for falsely declaring a service animal on a misdemeanor level. Walmart had voluntarily removed service dog vests from their stores.

Second Story: That lady should have been kicked out of the hotel the moment she practically admitted to sneaking a dog into her room. That alone should constitute a violation of the contract.

The amount for that pet fee makes me wonder if OP works for the same hotel chain I do. I used to work Guest Relations for the chain, and if it is indeed the same chain, then that lady is lucky she didn't get charged $250 for an undisclosed pet fee. Not sure how ADA comes into play with it, but if you don't tell us you have an animal, and you sneak them in, it doesn't matter how long your stay was, you're getting charged that $250. She also should have been charged for the candle incident, as candles are not allowed, and are treated the same as if you smoked in the room, which is another $250. If I was that GM, I would have charged her the smoking fee, for the undisclosed pet, charged her for damages to cover the towels AND the sheets, and then marked her as Do Not Rent to ban her from all other hotels in the chain. Then, when she calls Guest Relations to find out why she was charged over $500, we would be more than happy to inform her that she was charged for letting her dog shit on the bed, and that she will not be allowed to stay with us again.

When I was in college, I had two entitled Karen's try to claim that my car belonged to them. They were crawling all over my '74 Corvette that my father and I spent 6 years restoring. They were taking selfies and making Instagram videos of them crawling all over it. Anybody who knows about Corvettes knows they're made of light weight fiberglass and can be damaged easily. I started recording for insurance purposes and to show the councilor later. I asked them politely to get away from my car. Karen 1 said, "This is my car so you need to f off, you little (slur for gay man)". Karen 2 jumped in, "Yeah, your broke butt couldn't even afford a Hot Wheels version of this car. My friend got this car for her birthday." My reply was, "Okay. If you can get in through the passenger door and start it with the key, I'll let you go." Karen 1 spent a good 10 minutes digging through her pockets looking for the keys. Once I was tired of waiting on her, I pulled the keys out of the smokers pocket in my jacket, started the car and locked myself inside, and told them not to lie about what happened when they get called into the office. I dive off and was rewarded for middle fingers from Karen 1 and 2. Somehow, there was no damage done to it. I came back later and showed the councilor the video. They ended up having their FAFSA revoked (which I didn't know was possible) and neither of them could afford to continue with college. At the same time, I'm almost thankful because like me, they were going for a degree in Special-Ed. If they'd act that way towards somebody with high functioning autism, I don't even want to think how they would have treated somebody who's non-verbal.

Where was the first story? A hospital in my area has valet parking and was given my vehicle which was the same make a model as hers. When she was contacted by the hospital she said she would be back later, they gave her 10 minutes and then called police, the police treated it as grand theft because she had said she was just ten minutes away and had taken my van to the mall which was less than 10 minutes away.

I can’t leave the first story like you don’t feel someone else’s car and just run an errand and then birthday the gas. I probably would’ve told her that I was taking her car then.

First story, she didn't mistake it as not her car. The vallet attendant hands her the keys to the wrong car, Karen noticed and thinks to herself "I could just play dumb and not have to pay for gas while I run errands" and that's what she does, and she got away with it too

Story 1: the second she was informed it's not her car it became criminal, theft Like before that she can claim she genuinely didn't realise it was the wrong car, but after that she knew and not returning it at that point is legally theft How is joy riding not a crime????

If ya want a room by the hour, there is the "NoTell Motel"..... I work in a hotel, and if ya trash the room pet. Service animal, or not, it's gonna be at least $250 a room for just smoking, more if it requires replacing stuff and or specialty cleaning. She got off too easy.

Law clarification on service dogs in the US. The OP is correct that those are the only two questions that you can ask according to the ADA. HOWEVER. An untrained service animal like the one in this story CAN be asked to leave and damages caused by said untrained service animal CAN be assessed, although no pet deposits can be.

The car...in the mid 90's I walked out of a store and went to "my" car. Same make, same model, same color. Key worked, started. However, the seat adjustment was wrong. I looked around and there were some items which weren't mine and some of my things were missing. So I turned off left and locked it and looked around. Mine was 1 row over. If you are at all alert, you know your car even if others wouldn't.

Story 2. It doesn’t even matter if this ladies dog was an actual service dog. Yes, a hotel can not charge a pet deposit. However, a hotel can charge for any damages cause by a dog. Regardless of if the dog is a service dog or not. I am absolutely appalled by this ladies entitlement and behaviour. It is people like this, that make it more difficult for those of us with trained service dogs, to be able to go into public.

My logic says that unless you say upfront that a service animal are one then it isn't. If you hide its existence, it isn't a service animal. Damage caused by an animal should be payed by the handler whatever it is a pet or service animal. And service animal or not, an area supposed to be animal free due to allergies should not be there. Dog hair is dog hair whatever it is from a service dog or not. There can be no excuses on that last point.

First story, I like to use a keychain with my name on it, especially for valet parking. Being able to say at the valet stand it's the keys with blank name on it. It speeds things up. I also leave things in a rental car so I know it's mine. A small notebook (the 38¢ kind), with milage and gas info, and my name and phone number. Along with a drink cup, or soda pop bottle. Something to look in the window and know it's the correct car. But I keep the rental car paperwork in my purse. I use the name keychain when I take my car in with repairs too. My husband was with me one time to pick the car up from repairs, and they're fumbling looking for the keys, I spoke up to say it's the keys that say “I love my husband's name ”, oh... That one, ok and they find it in the pile quickly. My husband looked at me and said “oh that's why you put the keys on that ring before we came here”. Yup, it makes life easier. Moral of the story... Get a keychain with your name on it, even for rental cars, valet parking, or car repairs. It just makes life easier, and fewer mistakes. There also should have been something the cops could do to the car theif. Even if it was the valet's mistake. She drove away in a car she knew good and damn well it wasn't hers. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Like WTH? 👵☮️🖖

The 2nd story I have been in this position so many times and been threatened with a lawsuit about kicking people with pets out that serve a disability. If you know within reason that a dog is not a service animal, you are allowed to refuse service. Take the first day, for example. She claimed no pet, so you can quickly assume she didn't have a pet for a disability.

Story 2 (Hotel/Karen/Dog): Knowing how fucked up that Karen was, the dog likely could have been a service dog for emotional support.

Funny I see this video in my feed right after getting my car that my grandfather left me back after my father sold with out my permission after promising to not only get the cops involved but go full john wick on everyone involved.

Just so everyone knows; businesses CAN in fact kick out a service dog ONLY if the dog is being a disruption or causing problems, such as, you know, pooping all over the bed. While yes, legally a business can only ask those two questions and there is no form of legal identification, if the dog in question is barking, growling, going to the bathroom, jumping, etc.. Then YES THEY CAN ASK THAT PERSON TO LEAVE!!

There is actually a third question to ask about a service dog but not directly related to it being a service dog. “Is the dog current with your state or local licensing.” To be in a training program to be a service dog they must be licensed to insure that vaccinations are up to date. It’s a prerequisite to training. Lack of licensing has various repercussions in your jurisdictions. At least 6 states have laws against falsely claiming the status a dog as a service animal which includes a fine and/or jail time, usually as a misdemeanor. There should be a national registry for Service Dogs that should include microchip identification.

2nd story: couldn't the hotel not waive the pet fee even if it was a "service dog" Maybe they could have it in their bylaws that the extra fee wouldn't be waived if the person didn't have a license that showed that their dog was a service dog, so it wouldn't hurt the people who genuinely require the dogs and not let Karens get away with such blatant lies

In the first/title story the cop is wrong. The Karen was informed very shortly after the mix up was discovered. Und flat out *REFUSED* to return the car to the hotel. That *IS* theft.

Service dogs are for the disabled and what she did ruins things for people like me who actually need a service dog.

I have a service dog and I'm familiar with the rules of service animals due to working retail. Customers love to claim their pets are service animals and put them in the shopping carts which is a no-no. The animal has to walk, but I think having your own method to transport the animal (a pet safe carrier or bag or stroller) is acceptable. If the animal misbehaved during the visit, you have the right to kick the person out under the grounds of property damage. Hotels honestly should have the same rules as housing/airlines for service animals just for their own safety. But there also needs to be a thorough training in service animals as I've been kicked out for having one and all the animals did was sit under a table while we went to order food. A GM did contact us to apologize and offer free food, but the damage was done and we don't eat there anymore.

I love the "Karen" stories. They make me laugh. Story 1 sShe had not committed any crime. She just drive the car she was given. If anything it was the Valets fault for giving her the wrong car. They should be the one in trouble. Story 2 was the Karen's fault for not only stealing the towels but for having the dog in her room. Story 3 is a joke. ALl that was said was "My dad was awful." That could mean anything. It could mean he didn't like her make-up, or maybe joked around a little bit with her. To me this girl sounded like an entitled Karen herself. We never found out what was so awful. SO, I am not blaming anyone in this story because we only heard the one side.

Oh my druggy sister stole my used car after I’d gotten it , she took it calling it “ her “ new car despite she already had one from 4 years previously, so when mom n dad left, she, her boyfriend and friends waited until I got home, ruffed me up stole my keys and money that was to last 2 weeks , 90% of the food in the house, turned the beaker off and removed all the fuses oand the phones and threatened to kill me if I dare leave the house Or tried to contact anyone and she or her friends will drive by to check to make sure while she was going to take her new car out, so we fast forward a week and the school notified my parents that I wasn’t in school and was worried because they couldn’t reach the house, my dad catches a red eye and comes in a taxi , see’s no cars and is furious and then my sister shows up with two friends ready to punish me but is met with my dad who bolts for it as he chases after her, yo make a long story short, she trashed my car after police found it near a drug den, she managed to escape out of state to not be arrested my parents cleaned out her car n sold it to try n repair it but it barely worked I did get a new 2000 model car for my birthday
