Building 'Real Worlds': From the Storytelling of Science to the Science of Storytelling
In this seminar, Karin Verelst will explore the deep connections between worldbuilding in the scenic arts (in the largest sense) and rational/scientific worldview construction, from classical metaphysics up to modern science. This connection was already established in Antiquity (as is clear from Plato’s cave allegory) but it gains new traction in theory and practice with the dissemination and impact of new representational technologies that allow for new variants of old ontologies, and maybe for truly new ones as well. Ontology is hot again! The interactive nature of these technologies forces us to rethink the relation between presentation and representation, between body and mind, between real and unreal, and in what manner the unreal can be real. Karin Verelst will explore these questions with a focus on the borderline where theory and practice (experimentation, audiovisual realisation, games…) overlap.
The Speaker
Karin Verelst is a philosopher of science with an interdisciplinary background in the humanities and exact sciences. She is at present lecturer at the Brussels-based Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinematography and Sound (RITCS) and senior researcher at CLEA. Representational worldview construction and its paradoxes in science and art are at the heart of her different research projects.
The CLEA seminars are taking place simultaneously at the VUB campus in Etterbeek, Brussels, and online (via Zoom) and are open to everyone interested. Read more at clea.research.vub.be/en
