I am a Kannadiga and this problem arises every couple of years and i see no viable solution for this, The government don't wanna give away water but the high court's orders has to be followed...and people protest against the government.

Mainly this problem comes up due to the problem of lack of monsoon rains and during drought the two states should share the problem together but Tamil Nadu is not agreeing to this since before! Their main argument is that whether it rains or not, we need a normal share

The solution is simple, all these big cities and states should force the companies which are not into manufacturing and where workforce can be work from home, should be work from home. As this country has a massive population and suddenly the establishment of private sector forces the majority to live in a few selected cities and states. Which is actually not only exhausting for natural resources but also for a lot of things. Work from home should be given across Bharat.

@@shravan97 work from home doesn't decrease water supply usage. It would save electricity and other few resources. Most of the companies in bengaluru are private sector with non-manufacturing background but they also have assets like buildings so it is a loss if they keep it close and it will hamper their effeciency too. So rather they would sell it or rent it out increasing water usage. SO by my thinking work from home doesn't help

One more point to note here is, TN doens't have any other perinial river within itself. It has always depended on upper state for water. Also TN's geography doesn't suite it to build a bigger dams like KN.

As Kannadiga from north it doesn't bother me Krishna Basin covers 70% of Karnataka. Bengaluru is dependent on Kaveri only solution for it's drinking water problem is ofcourse Rain Water Harvesting, and also they should develop some other city in Karnataka to so the burden for Bengaluru is reduced. Which I don't think any current party is thinking to do

Congress State Govt are wasting public money in giving freebies. Instead of investing in Doubling Railway Lines in Karnataka and Constructing Dedicated Freight Corridors, Constructing Many Ports in Karnataka and Constructring Wide Roads in Karnataka. Also Karnataka Govt is not focusing in Developing North Bangalore and Tumkur City. Tier 2 Cities Infrastructure like Mangalore, Udupi, Hassan, Mysore, Hubbali, Tumkur, Davanagere also need immediate push.

pani puri is a snack. Its not staple diet. Understand this. Rice is eaten by majority of Indians not only TN and KA people. pani Puri contains the same flour from which upma is prepared. I am living in Bangalore from more than 15 years and I have seen the bundh, strike regarding this cauvery issue between the states... But for the first time I got to know the the real reason behind this issue which allowed me have a clear cut idea about problem and perspectives of both states... millets can be an add-on but never replace rice as a staple diet. Also, Kaveri length in Tamil Nadu is one third lengthier than Karnataka. In TN it passes through fertile lowlands, but in Karnataka, it passes through hilly areas so the dependency is high in TN.

This is an incomplete analysis. First the British didn't favour Madras Presidency, They calculated the river flow length. A river is called a river from origin till sea point. Based on that the share was given. This point you didn't and blindly said British favourrd. If karnataka wants the claim of cauvery, please take it. Don't send one drop of water. Ok agreed ?. But please don't send water when there is a high rain fall. So you don't want cauvery in tamil nadu when water shortage and need cauvery in tamil nadu when more rain fall. This suits the best definition of hypocrisy. Second, Banglore didn't have water shortage bcoz of cauvery water sent to TN. Even if you have all water and if for one day the lorrey drivers goes to protest, banglore will have shortage. What does TN do here. Without a limit you allowed people bcoz you get tax and revenue and economy, this eventually dried the underground water level. So the correct problem is how will banglore make water level higher. Since ages, People only near the river consumr water from river. Nobody in Chennai or kanyakumari is using cauvery water. It is only the Delta region. Why does banglore depend on cauvery water which is atleast 100 Km away from nearest cauvery?? Banglore guys didn't do water management, and allowed people without planning, and blame Tamil nadu for your water shortage. I'm in chennai, when I switch on the motor, I get water. Why banglore people switch on the motor, there is no water?? This is the real point to be discussed which surprisingly missed here in this analysis.

As a தமிழன் i accept some of the waters are going waste as our kannadiga brothers says but 1.those are not the parts of delta region (i mean some particular agriculture place in tamilnadu are depended on cauvery water because the place you see or think we are wasting water are other end of tamilnadu and those part are very fertile and have much water they needed & these two place have no relation by land they are too far so we can't transmit water in TMC for long distance) 2.our kannadiga brothers asks us to use oceans water as reverse osmosis, brother pls doo simple Google search how much it cost to reverse ocean water into drinkable water it takes millions of dollars for sure💯 if we had much money we could atleast build 3-4 dams 3.as everyone ask why can't tamils build a dam, yes offcourse we can build a dam but in this case dam should be build on agricultural region where we need water instead of cauvery, but unfortunately those land are plain surface sadly nobody can build a dam on plain surface coz how can a water flow on plain surface every dams are build on top of the slope so that water can be flowed down and distributed to different areas don't ask silly questions like why can't you use motors we are not pumping on gallons we have to pump for dozens of TMC's We are also humans i completely understand brother you need water but do understand we also need water not for other purpose but agricultural purpose for survival purpose it's wrong that you say cauvery only belongs to karnataka as water are common for even insects and animals and even as per world river management in which land more flow of river is considered as they belong that river so more flow is in tamilnadu offcourse,but i am not here to claim cauvery belongs to tamilnadu but also i won't accept cauvery only belong to Karnataka, waters are common natural resources and common things needs to be shared, do understand us brothers and if you have other opinion pls do reply in matured manner

1) The problem of drought should be shared by two states and not only by Karnataka 2) Let Tamil Nadu build a dam to collect more water or let Tamil Nadu agree to build a dam for Karnataka 3) The two states should jointly increase tree based agriculture in the Kaveri basin and bring back the old practice of millet cultivation.

@@srinivasashree0000 yes and one more thing is even central government is always against current ruling state govt means both are enemies even the enemy supports tamilnadu by telling karnataka that we to have some agricultural lands if you don't open water every crops gets destroyed and the humans depended on those also get affected so based on that govt took the rate of rainfall, drought, measure of farming land and how much water need for that land for both the state based on that they analysed and ordered by supremecourt to give a particular tmc for tamilnadu each month (and it varies if there's no rainfall )but these kannadiga politicians are making this politics and playing in many farmers life (i am not angry with my lovable kannadiga brothers but very angry with those who makes this politics and play with this as vote bank i also include tamilnadu )

Very little known, but nonetheless important - Eating more millets and less rice could make a huge dent into this problem, as millets use way less water for cultivation. Rice obsession is a major contribution to this water problem😢. ❤ Stay strong

Historically, rice consumption was never this huge. People are addicted to it as it is now produced in bulk which lowers the cost. People here have survived for thousands of years on millets so there's a strong reason behind it

The fight for the river has been going on since the 12th century, between Kalyani Chalukyas and Cholas. It was a source of contention between Madras presidency and Kingdom of Mysore too. Kindly do read up when you guys get time, but as stated there has to be a newer perspective to the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal.

Excellent work Ganesh! Very good point made about the irregularity of the rainfall in our southern peninsula. Even though Kerala and Karnataka which are along the Malabar and Konkan coasts respectively receives an average of 2000-2500mm rainfall annually. There has been massive irregularities with these figures. The area is heavily depenedent on the South west monsoon and even a 10-15% shortage can affect the farmers who are into water intensive crop production like rice. This year has seen a steep decline in SW monsoon numbers compared to the last few years despite the early predictions by IMD showing close to an at-par SW monsoon. As we can see multiple reports on sea surface temperature rising all around the world, this is only going to contribute more to the irregularities. The trend could be the same or even worse for the years ahead and systematic water conservation methods needs to be resorted. The central government and the supreme court will have to take hundreds of factors in consideration and cant be expected to do something which can massively change the status quo. Plus it is to be noted that the global demand for rice is still on an increasing trend and we cant stilll expect a massive shift in the crop prodcution practices.

People, politicians and officers have to understand that water has to be shared as per international standards , Sharing on the basis of not where water is originating but on the basis of how much area it flows in each country or state respectively. The following are my suggestions to help mitigate the problem: 1. There should be additional reservoirs in Cauvery Delta to ensure that water does not go into sea in excess years. 2. Mekadatu Balancing reservoir is essential for Karnataka to meet the monthly stipulations. If Tamilnadu objects, it should take the responsibility to store excess water released in earlier years and adjust it cumulatively, towards release from Karnataka. 3. The accounting year should be shifted to 1st April to 31st March, given the early rains due to climate change. 4. Distress Sharing: Whenever, Southwest Monsoon fails, the decrease in release to Tamilnadu should be calculated as if both Tamilnadu and Karnataka get their precipitation normally during Northeast Monsoon. Later, after Northeast monsoon, further release if any by Karnataka,based on actuals, should be decided. 5. Godavari releases a lot of excess water, some times in thousands of TMC per year. The water from Godavari be diverted to Srisailam reservoir and futher to Cauvery. It would help on the way Telangana, Rayalaseema and Tamilnadu. It should be implemented as a natural river linking project.

Us Kannadigas are asking for a viable, dynamic formula for sharing water during crisis .The political class will never resolve this issue since they can always use it to get to power. The cauvery water board has been issuing orders based off of age old surveys which havent factored in bengalurus mamoth growth . The board has to be very proactive and shouldn't rely on data provided by the state lawyers which may vary. Importantly, lot of politics and lobbying takes place behind the doors which leads absurd decisions creating confusion and disappointment amongst the public.

Actually TN started to promote millet productions 10 years ago they give incentives to farmers who produce millets (not as much as KA) but millets are not that much profitable as rice so farmers insists on going with rice. Also rice has become irreplaceable in an south Indian household so government has to promote millet based food products across India to increase demand so that for farmers it becomes more profitable.

Kavery which originates in Karnataka flows around 34273 sq kms but at the same time in Tamilnadu it flows around 43868 sq kms. And in Karnataka it irrigates around 5.12 lakh hectares of agricultural land meanwhile in Tamilnadu 14.7 lakh hectares of agricultural land is dependant on Kaveri. (data from agrometeorology department of GoI) To put it simple it's more about who depends on it more than where it originates.

I did my project in a wetland at point calimer in tamil nadu near the bird sanctuary. If the water supply is disrupted to tamil nadu the main cauvery delta is the most affected the mangroves are already shifting and thinning in the summers it's a natural disaster we collected samples from the point were the river water enters the sea over a period of time in years to study and it's very little water that reaches the mangrove. There is not enough water to flush it out these are ramsar wetland conservation area that is suffering already. If karnataka thinks just because cauvery originated from them they need to have it's water its absurd because the said river flows mainly in tamil nadu and the delta which is fertail naturally is also in tamil nadu...this video is incomplete and not well addressed it's very one sided a thinking of someone who just googled saw the numbers and decided that he will make a video do justice to both sides and know the geography If not ask others before doing a video. Nobody can stop the water from flowing into it's delta when there are floods what will karnataka do? Say let's drown we love this river too much? In Tamil Nadu cultivation happening more than 3000 years in cauvery delta. Ideally Cauvery origin points like Kudagu, Mysore should be part of Tamil Nadu. But it's not properly divided. The natural justice is delta ppl having more rights on river water. The solution will be all the dams including Tamilnadu should go to common body control. they will execute cauvery tribunal verdict and central government forces should be there in Dam safety.

The New Indian Express paper says 8th June 2023 State received 3.5 times more Cauvery water than the quantity Karnataka is legally required to give last water year, around 60% of it ended up in the sea as the state does not have the capacity to store it. As per the data accessed by TNIE from the water resources department (WRD), Tamil Nadu received 667.67 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet) of water from Karnataka from June 2022 to May 2023, against the legal mandate of 177 TMC. According to a senior WRD official, most of TN’s waterbodies, including the Mettur dam, were nearly full due to the excess rain the state received, and most of the surplus water was released into the sea. A conservative estimate pegs the water let into the sea at a whopping 400 TMC. Now TN asking for 5-10 TMCs

@@subramanianktn8401 yeah but they can divert water or store water in different ways if you take the example of Telangana they build 2 projects where they pump water from river because their land is in higher elevations than rivers and they can't build dams or use water.

Telangana barely uses Godavari. It passes through very important belt like Nirmal, Basara, Manuguru

@@nageshwaranrahul first the Telangana land scape is very high elevated compared Godavari basin because of it they can't use water even if they want. Second because of regular cyclones formed on the east coast there will be rainfall throughout the year in jharkhand which gives a lot of water to Godavari. That's why it flows the entire year and is used for a lot of forming in Godavari district in AP. That's why the polavaram dam is very important because it gives a constant supply of water to AP which will make AP water slove in an instant. After completing 2 canals will build one go to visakhapatnam other go to Krishna basin from there it goes all they way to Penna river

Karnataka farmers protesting in banglore Bandh is affecting agricultural & urban(IT) economy of their own state... instead they should all go to Chennai and do the Bandh... Tamil Nadu should bear the urban loss only then they'll bend their knees.

This is the problem atleast you need to give water when there is drought if you build dam,each and everytime we need to come and beg for 6-7 months at that time our crops gets destroyed and no water for drinking.Even for this time too when u release water only we have NE rainfall which will be flood and also our crops gets destroyed each and everytime crops gets destroyed and hike in all prices .People in Karnataka should learn even though we face more issues in agriculture we are resilient and not indulging in behaviourial issues but you guys always indulge in riots and slapping every Tamil people don't you think we don't know fight.Try to behave as an educated with more compassion and empathy.

Tamilnadu is not building dams to store water, they just use some water and waste majority of it by making it flow to the bay of bengal, they like to watch the flowing of water and also not allowing Karnataka to build dams in Karnataka. If many dams are built in karnataka then they can supply water every day even during the summer time. Now in south karnataka part people (especially Bengaluru city) due to the less rainfall, they will not have any water to drink during summer time but Tamilnadu government wants this drinking water for their farmlands. Atleast we can import vegetables/rice from other states/country but we cannot afford to import drinking water in crucial times.

Dams cannot be built anywhere. Most of the Kaveri course in TN is in plains. More dams = more control and less natural flow of water. Karnataka can hold off water completely and claim strategical advantage. That is why TN is against it.

@@_GMP_ Even now people protest to release few water. If much dams are built, it will put TN at mercy of KA. And your adversarial tone, supports the theory. Just think in reverse for a sec. Would you allow your prime supply of water to a state which aggressively protest not to share water?? The solution, like said by Think School, is to change farming practices and reduce our dependence. We cannot, and our leaders will not solve these due to their politics

Thank you addressing this issue with such clarity ! the History of the Water agreements and Technical details of the crop patterns of both states have been highlighted. You left open the government apathy, paralytic policy and water politics both states indulge in without logic. One key factor you could have covered was the water storage infrastructure both states have and have invested in, where I feel Karnataka is way ahead of Tamil Nadu and is more committed to maintain the existing infra and also build new ones. Tamil Nadu on the other hand falls short and is always at the mercy of Rains or the CWT.

1) it's between two subjects of the nation. If the centre or the supreme court meddles in it ,it will hurt their rights.. 2) Assam , Meghalaya, arunachal, Nagaland are always at each other's throat due to the border issue, same case with the Punjab and dehli smoke issue , similarly Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand fighting over mineral rights coz they both are India's largest mineral and steel producing states, Himachal-Uttarakhand border dispute. Etc..... And these all are to be solved by the govts of the respective state not by the centre...

And it's now even been reported by Newyork times.. when it goes down... it will wipe 7 districts in kerala... It includes the southern neval command of india... Cochin shipyard... international Airport... And all I'm seeing is excuses from both the government... And icing on the cake is that the dam is sitting in the 3rd most earthquake prone locations in india... If it brakes...its going to take a big chunk of out of India economy, military, and population... Better safe than sorry...

@@rorschach4586 I also know that... And I accept that Indian laws are sh*tty. And both the state govts are merely looking for chances to promote themselves not to find a middle ground.... But this will eventually lead to disasters and unimaginable problems .. The centre must act on such issues without giving a heck for so-called etiquettes and some rules ,who cares about them if people are in danger... Since the disintegration of Assam ,the neighboring police force are acting like armies firing bullets and bombs at each other ,as if it wasn't enough the Meghalayan govt. is covertly pushing the khasi terrorists orgs and supporting the ulfa and the Bodo Terrorists bodies of Assam .. the situation is bloody just b'coz of hatred of the govts.. and it is just escalating day by day Similarly the water issue is a ln issue the centre must look into it... The rules need to be modified

After watching the video, what i felt is the title should have had the words "From Karnataka standpoint" on it. From TN side of things, it didnt even touch any point. * Firstly TN doesnt have any river that originates from its own border so it has to depend on other states for the water. * Second the technique that was implemented successfully was in Trichy district, meaning clearly TN is taking steps to reduce the water dependence. * Third, to be fair on both sides, there should have been a comparison between the losses incurred from both states both in investment and GDP output which would have clearly highlighted the problem. * Finally if Bangalore is the Tech hub of India, Chennai is the Healthcare, Financial Institutions, Education and Automotive hub of India (dont forget that TN is the most urbanised state in India) EXPECTED BETTER UNBIASED ANALYSIS FROM BOTH STATES STAND POINT FROM YOU.
