I’m glad he acknowledged Rai Benjamin and his incredible time as well! Great sportsmanship and respect. It was a “perfect race” that took the gold in the end.
Probably the greatest performance in the history of sport. For 29 years the mark of 46.78 by Kevin Young could not be beaten. All three medallists in this race ran faster. With the bronze medal being won in 46.72, which was more than three quarters of a second behind the winning time. If someone had told Benjamin he'd run 46.17 in Tokyo, he would have been elated, but to run that astonishing time, only to come 2nd is unfathomable. The winning time of 45.94 is faster than many athletes ran to win their national championships in the FLAT 400! I am not surprised Karsten tore apart his shirt. The adrenaline must have been flowing, out shining the inevitable lactic in his legs, especially coming down the home straight. Breathtaking race. I've been an avid fan of Athletics for over 40 years and this race is easily the best I've ever seen. Simply incredible.
Yea people don’t really know what this means and I don’t blame them. I can appreciate this more than the average person because I run the 400 hurdles. It takes a lot of practice to get on his level as well as strength with his 14 steps.
This was the highlight of the Games for me. I'm not Norwegian, but hey, this WAS the big race. Well done Karsten, this was your day. Under great pressure, you delivered.
Just reading your comment right know made me fully realized that the race which may very well be the greatest ever had to be run without a crowd. Good thing it will soon be toped tho. ;)
Imagine three runners breaking Kevin Young's almost 30 year record time of 46.78; folks, that's three decades of no one coming close until Karsten did 46.70 last July. Then, in one day, three did it in one race? The greatest running race I have ever witnessed, I tell ya//
It's hard to explain how good a 45.94 is. You would think the 29 year old record was so good that it couldn't be improved much, but he absolutely crushed it. I wish I had a video of my reaction, screaming and making all kinds of weird sounds.
@@RobertSmurda Was just talking to my son about it today..and this is how I explained it to him - Kevin Young once clocked 46.78, it stood as world record for nearly 30 years until Warholm broke it last month with time of 46.70; now, putting aside that new record time this one race produced three runners clocking faster than 46.78 (a time that stood for almost 30 years). It's like three sprinter with first two breaking Bolt's 9.58 and the third doing 9.64; and his response "oh, okay." LOL!!..I think this one will stay good forever//
Nice acknowledgement of Benjamin's run, who pushed him to the finish. Class act. Historic run - congrats to him and Norway! Aside: as close to perfection as it was, he took 15 strides between the last two hurdles, (where Rai edged closer to him, Rai taking 13 strides there)... so... I really think Warholm can go even faster. It won't be easy but if he can manage 13 strides the whole way at that pace... yikes!!!
It was a planned choice to use 15 strides for the last hurdle. According to Karsten, you need to be patient to keep the feet long enough on the ground to get full push through the legs, and he expected it to be hard to be that patient since he expected Rai to be very close at that point. The 15 steps might have been important for being able to get up the extra speed after the last hurdle. I'll not say that it's impossible for him (or Rai) to run even faster, but the Tokyo track is a fast one.
He told norwegian media that he purposely did 15 steps there to try to affect Rai’s rhythm and cause an imbalance in his run. Karsten and his coach stated that it is very uncomfortable to run next to someone that changes their rhythm because when these guys run these races it’s like a metronome. Their body are working like clocks, and any unexpected changes to that rhythm can cause an imbalance in an opponents cycle.

He's a gentleman and a great athlete. This was one of my favorite Olympic track events. He and Benjamin pushed each other and it worked well for both of them. Accolades to them and the Brazilian who took bronze.
Karsten is a lovely person. Always so humble and he always acknowledge his competitors or fellow sports athletes. He was named the role model of the year in Norway as a 22-year-old in 2019 for his good values. Because he cares about his fellow human beings and is a sincere competitor who is friendly and welcoming to everyone. He always takes time for the young people and appreciates the volunteers. To be a world star and at the same time a good role model is not an obvious thing. He has said on behalf of top athletes that you should be happy and appreciate the opportunities you get every day. The only negative thing the jury found about him was that he tended to arrive a little late for training. He is always in a good mood and has a coach who always smiles and is cheerful. They joke and have a lot of fun together, which is important when you want to be able to perform. An example of his coach being a world class motivator: Just before Warholm was to enter the "call-room" before the final of the 400 meter hurdles (World Championship, London 2017) he and his coach Leif Ove Alnes stopped outside the entrance. They stood face to face and roared as loud as they could at each other: - Uuuuuuuæææ! It was a primary howl. Nothing else. But the guards at the arena jumped. The other coaches jumped. The seven finalists jumped. Then Warholm stepped into the "call-room" as the last one. Straight-backed, broad-shouldered and with his head raised. He had the upper hand. He was already world champion. 😉
Rai Benjamin was so damn fast that he probably thought coming in to the olympics he was going to win. I mean he was 0.6 faster than Warholms previous WR. He knew he was fast and must be a bit broken up about that right now ;) Big ups yo Rai and Dos Santos for contributing to Warholm making history
He needs to run an open 400m race and take that world record too. With his speed he'd be the first guy under 43 seconds. No one has ever owed both world records.
Warholm said that if he would run a similar race to this in the 400m flat he would get a time well down in the 43’s. I think he’s aiming for the european record of 44,33 in Lausanne august 26. Warholms PB in 400m flat is 44,87 set in 2017. He will easily smash that record. I’n norwegian and have followed Karsten and Jakob for years now. My prediction for Karsten in Lausanne is a time of high 43’s. I think he need to get a bit more familiar with running 400m without hurdles and fine tuning his form a bit more before he goes under 43,5!
@@andycano5756 Open 400 should be 1.5-3 seconds faster than 400m hurdles times depending on the athlete (hurdling technique, stride pattern adjustment etc). Warholm doesn't seem to adjust too much and is pretty efficient over the hurdles, so I think that he's probably on the lower end of the time adjustment. I do think that Warholm is capable of at least a low 44 (very likely could probably go faster). I'd like to see him run a couple 200m races to see what his raw speed looks like.
So much athletic ability and so much class as a person. i cannot think of a better role model in the sport and I do not base that on this performance or this interview alone.

It's just incredible that all top 3 finishers (Warholm, Benjamin, dos Santos) broke the former WR by Kevin Young. That is such a rare feat in track & field and I'm glad I was able to see it live
Being an ex decathlete has its advantages and it shown here. Congrats to both superstars. 1 pushes the other. Same with the ladies. I think there is a new found respect for 400 hurdles which will now be must see tv.
@@KarmaKahn strength along with speed and maintaining. That is what the champ decathlete did in Rio. He ran a 45 flat 400. Plus doing all those other hard events. In Walhals case, he exemplified that, especially in last 50 meters.
My jaw hit the floor with this race, and especially the time. The last time that happened was the 800 men's final in London 2012, and before that. Bolt's 9.69 in Beijing. These 'off the chart' performances are rare.
Analyzing a high percentage of the races and comparing known PBs and rounds of running factors, a basic review shows the track providing between .1 and 1.1% of improvement. That is, on lesser tracks, KW runs 46.45 (worst case) and RB runs a 46.68 (worst case). 0.85% improvement is the mode, so, a 46.34 and 46.57 would be expected.
Karsten ran 300 m hurdles at Bislett Stadium, Oslo. June 2021, setting a world record of 33.26. Had he run the last 100 meters and used 12 sec, the world record of 400 m would have been 45.26 ... the track surface at Bislett Stadium is not considered to be among the fastest in the world! Let this sink in!
You should do an Olympic Geography quiz in America... you will be amazed.. Most powerful and influential countries speak English.. so the world is influenced Air travel and sailing standardized is in English.. I think
Most of us younger Norwegians (millennials and gen z) speak English with very little accent, at least compared to the generations before us. We are taught English from the age of 6 :)
Most of the European athletes besides most of the French and most of the Spanish speak English. It’s their second language there usually. Especially in Scandinavia and Germany.
Scandinavians, Germans, Dutch all have very good English, they learn from a young age + English speaking shows aren't dubbed like they are in Spain, Portugal and Italy. The standard of English there is much lower.

He did not accuse him of cheating, but Warholm is clearly not a fan of the springy foam technology in the Nike shoes (which is something exclusive for Nike, by the way).
@@eivindtolas8552 he’s wearing carbon fiber spikes, which foam. Something only Puma offers. That doesn’t mean what he’s wearing is not fair. It just means they are both wearing their company’s latest innovation.

The Nikes Rai wears are carbon fiber spikes with foam soles, and the Nike air bubble. The air bubble is what Warholm was complaining about. So you don’t even know what he’s talking about, yet you’re correcting me.
Well, for the Puma’s he’s only mentioning a carbon plate, from what I can gather, that they’ve «tried to make as thin as possible». The Pebax foam is not in his shoes - only in the Nike’s. He than also says that if you want cushioning under the shoes, you can put a «mattress» there instead of a «trampoline».
