You are right but it's fine to touch a katana or sword when you are deflecting a sword or a thrust, and when you are preforming noto (return the sword to the saya) you use your hand to guide the sword into the saya.

Is it a must to oil the blade? When I received my swords they were oiled but I cleaned it off after a while since it collected dust. So my question is? Does one have to oil it even if it’s just for display and never used??
@thedojomartialarts
@thedojomartialarts 2 года назад
Good question. Yes. Swords need to be wiped well every month or so. Oiling frequency depends on the humidity in the house, etc. In summer, oil and clean your blade even more. Make it a fun, meditative activity when watching a samurai movie. You can pick up decent sword/knife oil here www.amazon.com/Premium-Knife-Blade-Oil-Honing/dp/B082ZBDF2Q/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=180YG8NIX5B0A&keywords=sword+oil&qid=1655154424&sprefix=sword+oil%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A23ERW4QLAY31Z&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyUEFCSVZKRkEzVlE5JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODY5NjQ0M05ZTTUyTEoxVE1TQyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTU2MDgyMUEwNTFIRkhGN1dMMyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

You can if you wish. The wrap keeps the excess shipping oil from getting in the scabbard. If it were mine, I would remove the wrapping, as you will want to show the blade to people in the future. You can also wipe off the gross, excess gel that they cover it with. Enjoy the sword!

Now I bought these months ago in the summer, and only recently opened them this past Christmas. But the Katana was difficult to unsheathe. So here is my question, what kind of maintenance oil should I use??? If anyone has an answer,please let me know.
@thedojomartialarts
@thedojomartialarts 3 года назад
Humidity will affect swelling in the scabbard. The more you draw it, the more it will wear down the wood amd loosen up. I would google what oils to use and then purchase one that works for you. Best of luck!!

I know. That annoying wax that they put on some of them is terrible, isn't it? Seems like it never, ever ends. It won't affect the blade, but I wipe my bladed until it is gone. Might take many, many wipes?

That was very well done, Todd. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate this. I will refer everyone to your video. I use this kit from Amazon. It was only around $11. amzn.to/2trPcO4 Not too expensive to clean your blade with traditional methods. This is also part of the martial tradition. Sure we can use other methods. Similar to folding a Gi. There are traditional and proper ways which are a practice in discipline or one can just throw the wet Gi in a bag and carry it home. We miss out on the value of having traditions and the martial practice. Thanks again, Mr. Norcross.

never touching the blade with your hand I learned early on before my dad got me my first katana but something I never learned was when sheathing I see people guiding the blade into the sheath with their hand/fingers/back of their hand, is that also considered wrong?

Back of their hand? No one ever does that. That will really cut your hand.
@derriklangworthy4188
@derriklangworthy4188 5 лет назад
It is correct actually. Ive never understood using your finger as a guid for the back of your blade, i mean its practical as far as sheathing your weapon but when it comes to transfering your skins oils and stuff just makes zero sense. But i guess the kata for a katana was invented when the katana was more than just a decorative piece.

I dont mean to bother you, but I am thinking of buying a lovely sword and I don't want to buy something fake or so cheap that it would break if I ever came to use it( which I don't ever really plan to). You're swords are just so beautiful and I was wondering if you knew a reputable sword salesman with reasonable pricing. I'm looking for something anywhere between 2 to 6 hundred dollars even better if the blade is a good deal. And also is $200 to $600 enough to get me a wonderful piece of functional art like yours?
@thedojomartialarts
@thedojomartialarts 9 лет назад
We sometimes use www.swordsoftheeast.com, but there are several other good companies out there too. As with all things, you get what you pay for, so a $100 sword will not generally be as well made as a $500 and above sword. The internet is good as price comparisons, so do your homework and you can sometimes find the same sword cheaper at another seller. $200-$600 is plenty of money to get started with a good sword. The metals used in the blades nowadays can often exceed the old Japan days. Science has improved swords in most cases. Good luck!

@IhateYoutube
@IhateYoutube 8 лет назад
+BekkerOnGunsNHunting $20.00 cleaning kits contain Choji oil it's not rocket science really. Choji is nothing more than pure mineral oil with a drop of clove oil added for fragrance. You can make your own Choji at home with Pure Mineral Oil and Clove Oil that can be bought at most grocery stores. The issues with using other types of oils is that you don't know what sort of effect it *may* have on the wood and the glue that hold together the Saya and Tsuka halves. It's not so much the blade you have to worry about.

I feel using a $20 cleaning kit on a $800+ sword even a $1,000 one would make me a little weary, especially if it’s from Amazon.. if you’re spending that cash on a work of art like you said, you don’t want to short yourself on the materials and the ability to properly preserve the artwork. what was the katana with the straight blade?

It is a ninjato, a version of the katana used by ninjas

the ninjato is pure fantasy, not historically accurate.

+Salahuddin Muhammad, agreed, the straight ninja sword is a 20th century fantasy. They used regular katana or wakizashi like everyone else.

Peilong L, true, but it it's good to bare in mind it's not an historical Japanese sword.

Darcy Brocklbank who sells swords for $50,000 and up says do not use ichico powder as it scratches the blade.

Katanas are special blades. But they rust. My kitchen knife for 8 years or so never had rust and is still as dependable as ever. I hope katanas are made this way. Lol

You can get a “katana” made out of carbonized steel-titanium alloy that won’t rust. But it wouldn’t be a traditional katana. Tradition is a huge part of the katana, swordsmiths in Japan take this shit very seriously. It would not be appreciated if you were to get that kind of sword especially by the people who dedicate themselves to this tradition.

I cut my thumb almost clean off trying to throw a sword and catch it. I was alone and had to call 911 i was about 16. I since sold my swords and now i'm just a swordless samurai...
