A song about a Mother mourning the loss of her Son and the fact he never achieved his full potential due to a lack of education and opportunities. She sings in an Irish accent (she is half Irish) which has led to speculation that this song is about the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland at the time. This song was banned from UK playlists during the Falklands War. It was off her "Never for Ever" album. Another great song from that album is "Breathing" about a Nuclear War (at this time there was real fear of a Nuclear conflict which as a Teenager I shared that fear!).

I think that it was on a BBC banned list for the 1st Gulf War (as its message was considered to be anti-war) there was some controversy when the existence of the list ultimately came to light.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it, this song is from her third album "Never For Ever" (1980). From the Kate Bush Encyclopedia Kate says of the song
The song is about a mother who lost her son overseas. It doesn't matter how he died, but he didn't die in action - it was an accident. I wanted the mother to be a very simple woman who's obviously got a lot of work to do. She's full of remorse, but he has to carry on, living in a dream. Most of us live in a dream. (Week-long diary, Flexipop, 1980)
B.F.P.O. stands for British Forces Post Office, it is used as a way to contact armed forces personnel posted overseas. "Our little army boy Is coming home from B.F.P.O. I've a bunch of purple flowers To decorate a mammy's hero. Mourning in the aerodrome, The weather warmer, he is colder. Four men in uniform To carry home my little soldier." Stuart Elliot - Bodran Brian Bath - Acoustic guitar, backing vocals Paddy Bush - Backing vocals & Mandolin Alan Murphy - Backing vocals, Electric & Bass Acoustic guitar Duncan Mackay - Fairlight Kate Bush - Vocals, Piano & harmony

As previously mentioned this song is from the "Never For Ever" album, which was Kate's 3rd studio album released in 1980. Kate's debut album was "The Kick Inside" (1978) on which you will find "Wuthering Heights", it was then followed by Lionheart (also 1978). Kate was a co-producer of "Never For Ever" and was her frist album to use the Fairlight CMI, which she had been introduced to by Peter Gabriel. One song that you have already reacted "Egypt" is on this album. I would second the recommendation for Breathing, but I would like to add Babooshka as well. Subsequently to "Never For Ever" Kate was the sole producer of her 4th studio album "The Dreaming" (1982), which is a very interesting album 😁 All the following albums Kate produced herself. In terns of UK album chart performance "Never For Ever" went straight into the number 1 spot.

Tears o'er a tin box Oh, Jesus Christ, he wasn't to know Like a chicken with a fox He couldn't win the war with ego Give the kid the pick of pips And give him all your stripes and ribbons Now he's sitting in his hole He might as well have buttons and bows 😔

Hi and thanks for this. This song is taken from her wonderful 1980 album "Never for Ever," which was Kate Bush's first number 1 album in the UK and the first ever studio album by a female solo artist to enter the UK album charts at No.1. In the song she synchronizes the blinking of her eyes to match the sound of the cocking of a gun, as she portrays a mother grieving over her dead son. But it is mother who as well as mourning for the loss of her boy, she also mourns over the absence of any other career path available to him. Kate herself said that the song itself isn't anti-army or anti-military as such, rather it is about how so many young people have no other options; the kind of advantages that others enjoy are denied to the working classes by education, etc and so they end up fighting and dying for others whose advantages mean that they don't have to. The son's death in the song is particularly poignant because as Kate herself said of it - the young boy dies in an accident, in manoeuvres, during peacetime - he doesn't even get a more 'glorious' death, but instead suffers a mundane more prosaic fate and in the process leaves the mother utterly bereft at the waste of it all - for which she blames herself. One of the stranger things about this song is how, despite everything else that she has done, and the incredibly dark subject matter she has tackled in her music, it was this incredibly tender song that 3nded up being the Kate Bush song that got banned.

No it's about those who didn't have the opportunities to achieve in other fields so they thought it might be a good idea to join the army.

This is from her third album, Never Forever. Released in 1980. The whole album is fantastic, it was really Kate doing exactly what she wanted, exploring the kind of thematic ideas she was currently Into. Her first two albums featured songs that she had written as a young teen, some were from five or six years earlier. But this album was Kate, innovating and up to date. I highly recommend 'Breathing' the last track. It deals with a nuclear holocaust from the perspective of an unborn infant!! No shit..

You would have thought the song would be simple to understand, you don't need to analyse it really, it's pretty straightforward, yes in effect people join the army and get killed in their 20s have wasted their lives, in the lyric ''could been a rock star, but didn't have the money for guitar'' ''could have been a politician but didn't have the education'' instead he is coming home in a pine box with his mother waiting at the aerodrome, and to be carried off by for soldiers, his mother is presented with a few ribbons and bows, to show for her sons short life .

Kate Bush army dreamers is a subtle reference to what was going on in northern Ireland she is half Irish, the "Troubles"" as the Irish both sides of the communities refer to the violence, on the streets in northern Ireland, were at it's highest, in the 80s and 90s with sectarian shootings and bombing both sides and soldiers dying. This was an internal struggle, that was centuries old , carried though the next generations brainwashing their children and remembering former grievance on and on it goes, unfortunately outside inference from across the pond from, so called dumb ass Irish./Americans who have never set foot in Ireland not minding your own business, supplying money to certain causes in northern Ireland community pretending to care to aid them, instead they wanted the terrorists to have the money it ended up in the so called freedom fighters the IRA, better known as as murdering terrorists 6:01 coffers ,where they bought weapons and explosives like smetex, planting bombs, killing civilians women and children, and morons like you picking up a rifle wrapping the flag around you sing the national anthem your government pointing, go there and kill them people, going abroad and killing innocent people getting in the way collateral damage , is what y anks like you ferkin Muppets call i, your warmongers you like killing, defending your freedoms what freedom are you defending you numpty , what nation is invading the USA ever who ? Northern Ireland has nothing to do with anybody, other then the Irish and the UK , and yes I'm from northern Ireland Belfast, and I as a kid I seen the troubles the violence you a American bet you ferking American you mong
