So hyped that you do the whole album. Very important one for me because the library in my elementary school had the tape of that album. And little 6 year old me rented this tape like almost every week. I was fascinated by the sound causing short movies to run in my head since I was not fluent in english back then. Similar to Queen, David Bowie or Led Zeppelin which I all listened to as a kid since my dad used to play their records at home, Kate Bush and especially "Never for Ever" both fascinated and scared me at the same time. Just look at Kate's photos on the back cover... This album is just great from front to back and maybe her most accessible work but still very artistic. And you will get a lot more of that fretlass bass. I kinda envy you, discovering this masterpiece with fresh ears. Enjoy the ride. I will. Thanks to whoever requested this.

The "breaking glass" sound was via the Fairlight CMI and one of the first sounds Kate sampled

Indeed it was ever hit single to ever feature any samples. It's clearer in the music video what the "breaking grass" sounds mean, basically she has revealed herself to her husband and I think that they represent the failure of her relationship with her husband, all because of her paranoia.

For over forty years, Never for Ever and The Dreaming have remained my two favourite Kate Bush albums.

Great you are doing this album. While Kate was always a fixture of my childhood in the 70s and early 80s (esp with Greatest Hits comps) I never really dug into her catalogue until about 20 years ago. Always loved Babooshka and there are some magical gems on this LP for sure. I think Kate did well not too overuse the Fairlight because it could have been very tempting back in 1979/80 when this was recorded. I believe the cello sound on Army Dreamers was from the Fairlight.

That video was one of the things that made me realise that there was more to girls than them just being silly and annoying 😅 Debbie Harry performing 'Heart Of Glass' on TV with Blondie had a similar effect on my then 9-year-old self 😄

I love your Kate Bush reactions. I think that she's incredible, one of a kind. I've always considered the North American popular music scene in the 1980s to be incredibly commercial whereas here in Europe, we had a penchant for embracing unusual, less commercial music.

Oh cool! So you've already listened to 'The Dreaming'! 😀 I'll watch your reactions the next time I'm in the mood for that album 😁👍 Meanwhile, I'll be enjoing 'Never For Ever' together with you 😊 PS: Kate is my favourite female artist, and the constant use of fretless and also double bass is one of the things I love about her music 🤩

Hi Justin and thanks for this and thanks for turning your attention to 'Never For Ever.' While I adore 'The Dreaming' I have always thought that this album is much better and sits alongside 'Hounds of Love' (1985) and 'The Sensual World' (1989) in my personal top 3 Kate Bush albums. This particular song was on John Lennon's personal playlist just before he was killed and as others have said the official video to it is one of Kate's most famous and iconic videos - it includes one of the Rock Genre's (and more recently TikTok's) most famous transformation moments. The video also goes a long way to explaining the significance of the glass breaking sounds: the older woman had come to believe that her husband wasn't attracted to her any more and so she disguised herself as someone younger and sexier in order to test him; and when they met he was attracted to this younger woman but because she reminded him of his older wife in happier times, and then comes the moment when he realises that she has deceived him and she realises that her schemes have only ensnared herself, and so there is a complete shattering of their world and relationship. Towards the end of this album you will encounter the very short instrumental piece 'Night Scented Stock.' It is best listened to by listening to 'The Infant Kiss' 'Night Scented Stock' and 'Army Dreamers' as a run of three. But that might be difficult in a reaction video. it works almost as well by listen to 'The Infant Kiss' and 'Night Scented Stock' and then listening to 'Night Scented Stock' and 'Army Dreamers.' The second song on this album, 'Delius' is worth paying close attention to. It is probably the closest she gets to operatic singing and is also probably the best song in the entire Rock music canon about someone dying with syphilis (admittedly that is a small field!). Thanks again.

The breaking glass is simply the couple throwing the contents of their kitchen at each other, as the wife’s desire to test her husband’s love leads to the complete breakdown of their relationship. Kate has spoken about this many times. And yes - watch the video!

The marriage was trashed by this little scheme of Babooshka's - hence the breaking plates (or glass) sounds.

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but Kate was introduced to the Fairlight CMI when she worked with Peter Gabriel on his 3rd album (Kate provided backing vocals on two tracks, one "Games Without Frontiers" was a hit single. At the time Gabriel was the only artist in the UK to own a Fairlight because they were extremely expensive. So for "Never For Ever" and "The Dreaming" the Fairlight was hired, by the time of "The Dreaming" Kate could control it herself. It was only when she created her "home" professional recording studio in a barn in the garden of her parents house, that Kate bought her own Fairlight CMI. Regarding Babooshka it's certainly worthwhile (if you get the chance) to watch the official music video. Oops, one more thing this album was a birthday present and remember putting it on the turntable immediately and listening to all of it, despite my friends wanting to go to the pub. BTW still went to the pub after I had played it 😀

To me, the breaking sounds represent the wife becoming unhinged when her husband failed the fidelity test.

Interesting! Myself, I've always assumed it was part of the Russian theme like the balalaika sounds and the name 'Babooshka', as it once had been a Russian tradition to smash one's glass against the wall after finishing the vodka in it 😁

One thing to add Kate cited the traditional English folk song "Savoy" as an inspiration for Babooshka, saying that she was sure that she heard about it on a TV series some years ago, when she was a kid. Now, this wasn't the first time that a folk song was used as an inspiration for a song. Indeed the title track "The Kick Inside" was based on the traditional folk song called "Lucy Wan" or "The Ballard Of Lucy Wan" the spelling of the title does vary. I say "based" but Kate made some major changes - e.g. giving the woman some agency, compared to the original versions. Now Kate would be familiar with Irish & English Folk songs since her brothers were active on the local folk song scene.

A balalaika (sp?) (Beatles - Back in the USSR) (the triangular Ukrainian? bass) would make sense in a song titled Babooshka... Hey Justin, I"m guessing you've heard the whole album in one session to do the reactions, so (even if you haven't) it's no spoiler that there will be "theatrical" songs (not to be confused with Queen's "operatic" songs - lol, as I am typing this comment, Prophet's Song will be up tomorrow morning 😁), but there's also some tracks to help me understand what separates a regular "nice" track from a Talking Heads "Heaven" "really nice" track 😚... and one track that is either genius or wtf 😆 - I'm looking forward to which way you went on that one!

Tori Amos owes KB her whole career sometimes it feels. The record reviewers constantly quote her style when they write pieces about anything off kilter they are confronted with. Great album before the switch in style.

Head's up Justin. Night Scented Stock is REALLY short (less than a minute) and works best as a prelude to Army Dreamers. You might want to consider doing those two together. In other news, you definitely need to watch the video for Babooshka. I don't want objectify her but, my god, she is hot in that. 😁
