She was an absolute joy to work with in every aspect, and the band too. I did the on stage sound engineering and developed the headset mic for her. (1979) Never has an artist or crew put so much effort and dedication into a tour.... and i did many.
Hey Martin. I would love the chance to work with her. When I was a kid the first record I ever bought was one of hers. Led me to a life time of real creative music with other bands/artists.
Minute 23, "You have to believe in yourself. You can't just accept what other people say all the time otherwise you become them, not yourself." A beautiful sentiment.
Not a pop star, but an artist through and through. Grounded, honest, modest and focussed on her work. Both of her brothers seem grounded, solid people too. The product of quality parents.
Thank goodness for RU-vid, this is a historic document to see Kate performing in concert. The whole family are well-rounded and intelligent people, and Kate herself is lev el headed and mature. A very rare glimpse into the legend.
After watching so many KB interviews, my takeaway is her honesty. She doesn’t take offense at any questions and just responds from the heart. Just lovely.
23:28 ‘You have to believe in yourself. You can’t just accept what other people say all the time, otherwise you become them and not yourself.’ A highly valuable and ever relevant wisdom.
Paddy has had a huge imput and impact on Kate's music over the years! Let's give one for Paddy, an unsung hero in the wonderful world of Kate Bush music! ( :
Just found this on youtube. I was at the Sunderland Empire Theatre in April 1979 as a 15 year old. I had never seen and have never seen to this day any performance as brilliant as Kate Bush.
This is nuts. Imagine being 20 years old and having this sort of responsibility on your hands. She was prepared to take it all on somehow, and then to continue doing it for years to come. How amazing is that?
It's strange. Her music still sounds so fresh and amazing, it could have been made yesterday. But when you watch this doco, and see the ancient cars and fashions etc., you realise how long ago it really was.
The music sounds extremely dated, and exactly like the music of 1979.. if you think this sounds remotely contemporary you're not listening to any new artists..
@@mikeborrelli193 She's number 39 in the world on Spotify and is now in the Top 5 on the Billboard charts..think about your comment again because she is technically mainstream once more.
What can one say about Kate Bush! I was at that first night in Liverpool so many years ago and it was just a privilege to see her perform live, she is and always will be a true British icon. J
She came from a very musical and gifted family which really grounded her and she knew from a very young age what she was destined for. Also a very private person too which I think is why she didn't do tours very often. I loved Kate Bush from the moment I heard her playing on the radio in the kitchen as a child thinking wow who is this singer she's so different to everything I've heard before. She came from a loving and very supportive family which made her into that totally unique and strong minded and driven person she was. Such dynamic and thought provoking lyrics penned from a young teenager, she was born to be the performer she was. A one off without doubt, I haven't seen anybody like her since and doubt I ever will. She's settled now and living a quiet life with her family. She deserves it, she blessed us with such beautiful music over the decades since she came from nowhere in the late 70s and dazzled us with her theatrics and ethereal voice with Wutherung Heights. She's simply brilliant, no superlatives could do her justice.
How could a girl that young come up with music like this???? "You give me life, please don't let me go, you crush the lily in my soul..." How can anyone not be completely smitten and mesmerized? Her music and vocal presence comes across as though it has emerged right from the subconscious level of dreams into the real world. HOW?????
@ROOTSCONTRA Not sure what song you are talking about, not sure why you would be watching a doc about her first tour in 1978 if you feel so much loathing, not sure you are aware of the themes she has fearlessly tackled, not sure if you have ever heard The Ninth Wave or Pull out the Pin, Breathing, or Night of the Swallow. You should also let David Gilmour, Elton John, Prince, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, and two thirds of the music artists of the last three decades that they are all wrong. OR.... You could, to take a quote from one of Kate's scariest songs: "With my ego in my gut My babbling mouth Would wash it up, Now I've started learning how.... I keep it shut."
Such a humble and sweet person. Six years later (1985) Kate released one of the best albums of all time, "Hounds of Love". A true Masterpiece of music. I love the first three tracks, the hits if you will. But tracks 4 to 12 still give me chills. Kate made an album that sounded unlike any music that had been made before. Not many artists can say that.
I was able to get tickets for two consecutive nights and flew from San Francisco to London to see her residency a few years ago. The Ninth Wave was absolutely crushing, heart-tearing, astonishing.
I'm 58 and Silver Center, I love to look on the face of young people when they hear her for the first time It's a combination of wonderment and space exploration like you're stepping onto a new world
One of only 4 musicians (bands) to have 8 albums or more in the UK top 40 simultaneously. Elvis when he passed, Bowie when he passed, The Beatles when their catalogue was release on ITunes and Kate Bush when she announced her first concerts in 35 years.
I cant believe i didnt know about her, really, until i saw documentaries like this in just the last few years. Shes fantastic. I feel so lucky because Ive found an artistic treasure trove, late in life, I didnt know about. (American, born 1961.)
It's nice to hear you say this as Kate didn't have the success in the US that she did in the UK and Europe but I do get her earlier stuff might not have been to the taste of what was popular at the time. She's come to the fore time and time again with hits like This Woman's Work being used in a few films and, of course, rerun success with Running Up That Hill being used in the Stranger Things series which has catapulted her back up into the limelight again with a new generation of fans both here and in America. Hats off to her, I've been a fan for nearly 40 years 😃👍
A talent. She was at her prime when the public was still thinking independently - a time when the public knew and recognised real talent. Wish those times will come back.
This is amazing finding this film of Kates first tour. I was about 19 or 20 and helped the costume designer. It was my job to find and buy many of the costumes for the dancers and the best one which I was sewing in the van on the way to the venue (as time was so tight) was Kate's costume with the 'wings' in blue. Brilliant time x
@@nellies cool thank you .thats pritty cool .hay i love swedish things as well iv never been there but would love to one day .i have my own truck in oz and its a scania i love it is old but a goody there are lots of good music come out of your country thanks for that .you sound like a lovely girl with a good heart .ok thanks again have a good day be safe
Oh man, I am SO thankful that Ms. Kate Bush DID NOT go on to become anything else but the Amazing and Awesome Singer/Songwriter that she is, was, and always will be!!! She will forever be in my heart as one of my most dearly beloved and favorite musicians of all time!!!♥♥♥
I wonder what happens to all the great musical geniuses who never got there break, and ended up as vets or psychiatrists? Imagine, as you say, that we never had Kate? Our lives would be so very different!
Unbelievable! I am one year younger than Kate (not a very chivalresque thing to mention). But just to mention how we adored her in those days. this feature captures the magic of Kate and those days.
imagine being this talented, creative, intelligent AND being absolutely beautiful. It's amazing watching her as she was still pretty much starting out and knowing how much she will evolve as a person and artist. mind blowing
This was delightfully inspiring, what a talented woman. I only got into Kate a few months ago, but she so quickly became my female role model, like an older sister I have never met. That kind of person is very rare, and I'm so happy that I found her.💙💙💙
I'm so glad there's this second wave of recognition! I've always adored her . But collectively her band equally remarkable elevating her immense talent. It's quite obvious when you hear her speak that she's very intelligent, not too different from the likes of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page or David Gilmour when interviewed. They're all prepared to share their experiences when asked pertinent questions but Kate Bush just fills a room with charisma and warmth.
There would never be a Kate Bush in today's music industry. People with real character, profound idiosyncrasies, pure natural talent, incredible uniqueness, insight and intelligence, and without all that socio-political baggage that plagues the modern world, belong to another era, and will never be seen again, except in these old video archives. I don't just feel like I've lost the most important part of myself, it's like we've lost the entire human race, and all that's left is a shadow.
Having seen Kate Bush twice at the London Palladium I might have agreed. However, try this young lady who I have also seen more than once. Different style but similar vibe. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CFzExUN1N8I.html
Such a natural beauty and talent, Kate Bush is in a league that few singers and musicians even rise to, and has the charm and character you so rarely see. She is such a joy to listen to both singing, and speaking, a sweetheart of a soulful woman.
The greatest female artist in living memory, creative, artistic, original, talented, gifted and musically brilliant. No one comes anywhere near her genius.
Kate bush is great but there's at least ten i can name off top of modern times that are amazing charli xcx, bjork, ariana grande, grimes, britney spears, beyonce, sophie
Britney Spears? Uhmmm...I really don't think so. Don't get me wrong, I actually have a soft spot for her but...there isn't any comparison between the two. World's apart.
Let's not look at the world through rose tinted spectacles. The 70s had more than their fair share of nasty people - just look at how prominent football hooliganism and the National Front were. The people you see here are nice because they're nice people - not because the 70s was some kind of golden era for niceness, because it wasn't at all.
Regardless of gender, generation or decade, KB represents a level of commitment to artistry that is nearly unattainable, and almost impossible in the industry of music. A benchmark reference to anyone in the pursuit. Besides being absolutely f****** brilliant and gifted!! The first time I saw her I was frightened by it.
@@LeeGee I think that’s exactly what Gregory is stating… it was her determination and guidance from family and people in the industry that helped Kate. Gender had little to do with “success”, talent does not always get noticed, bless her, Kylie had/has little talent in singing/writing etc but she was in the right place at the right time. Kate Bush has such talent but also had amazing self belief, at such a young age … todays hopeful stars/performers would do well to take a few leaves from her book
I remember watching this when it went out how many of todays pop stars realise that the wireless head set mike was made for Kate first so she could be dancing and singing at the same time? She was revolutionary then and now. My ex boyfriend got a kiss on the cheek from her on the first tour she did at the Birmingham date and I was fortunate to get tickets top see her last live event in London. It was indeed an event not a concert. I LOVE HER just wish she had done more live events she is an enigma
Saw Kate Bush in manchester apollo theatre on this tour. Show was very good , the excitement mounted in the auditorium prior the concert starting . The performance itself was superb. The band were very sharp. The lighting and general staging of the songs were all exceptional. What a performer Kate Bush was on this tour. It has been a long time waiting forl the next tour. The recordings carried on, and the quality remained high.
Ohh... WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW....just saw this documentary just right now in 2019, 11th of october and I am german, with very poor english abilities and....I just hope Kate is doing/feeling well! She is one of my heroes! And please just be a normal human being, just like you always was! Thank you for your big/great emotions/feelings you always share with us...thank you ... !!! thank you .. thank you!
What can you say about her? Arguably the best artist to ever come out of Britain. Beautiful to look at, fascinating to listen to, fiercely intelligent, humble, determined.... Yet you still want to protect her. One in several generations. Possibly unique. Her band deserved more credit though. They were great, too.
The content of the BBC's Nationwide programmes was always of high quality. They got right under the skin of every issue, every subject. Quality interviewers steering well away from inane questions.
To listen to someone so young, elaborate on her art with wit and wisdom, is truly inspiring. I'd recommend any young person starting out in music or other performance art to watch this. I remember when Kate arrived on the scene but this is the first time I've seen this. A real artist.
The absolute best … I’ve really never seen creativity like this from just one person in all of my 52yrs on this planet 🌏 it’s been an honour to witness
I’m the same age as Kate but back when she was first on my listening radar and on tv I though she was like 15 years older than myself. So Sophisticated and deep with life’s lessons . Wow, she still looks great
Amazing quality, years ago I bought a DVD off the internet and you could hardly see the images! This has always been a favourite, seeing behind the scenes, in the dance class and at the band rehearsals. Kate looks so beautiful and is so charming. When he says how will Kate Bush be at 31 and she says 'a few more lines, I hope they are happy ones' she just melts my heart! Thank you so much for posting this high quality version.
A wondeful human being who writes and sings most beautifull songs. Pure joy to listen to! Loved this early documentary of kate and her band. So pleased I came across it .Thank you for uploading !!
Since the interview she has turned out so much quality music that would make her younger self proud. But more importantly, she has given so much to the rest of us. Such a shinning start - we are all richer for her. Love you to pieces, Kate!
Love so many things about this - the wonderful atmospheric shots of London before all the property development, the brainstorming of the tour on rackety old sofas - all quintessential aspects of 70s British creativity before the corporate world moved in.
This isn't just "good quality" it is the best possible upload you could get due to the way you got hold of this. This is surely "Best quality possible"
I love Kate Bush period, but the first 6 albums will always be my favourite! Grew up with those records, and especially the first one and Never for Ever are pure genius to me.
The greatest artist and I emphasise #Artist" ever, she doesn't get half as much credit as she does. I'm just so glad I was able to grow up with this music, she had a profound impact on my life, still to this day.
Omg if I had this material to watch and listen to 40 years ago !!! I had to wait for Wuthering Heights to come on tv once a week and we had 2 channels in New Zealand then. I was OBSESSED with her. Still am.😊❤🎉
Just got PROG mag today and she's all over the cover. Found this video never seen before. Utterly astounding !! She was and still is an amazing talent. What gets me is she wrote MWTCIHE at 13!!! She was just a child herself. I'm a big early genesis fan and used to think she was the female Peter Gabriel. I know she took inspiration from him as she credits him for 'opening the windows ' on one of her early albums. But I much prefer her music to Gabriel's solo stuff. The depth and bredth to her music is staggering. Ballads/ rock/pop/Eastern and even musichall on her first album. Kate Bush. A true talent. One in a billion. I salute you!!!!!
