Love this. You need to bear in mind that Jon, John and Kate are all iconic singers, who had all had enormous hits in the past few years before this, spanning different genres, so this really was an all-star cast. I was a tween when this production happened and, while I didn't get to see it, I certainly heard all about it and knew a lot of the songs, especially this one and I Don't Know How To Love Him, which Kate also sang.
Apart from the three members of Australian rock royalty there were about 10 more renown Aussie singers including Russell Morris who had the world wide hit THE REAL THING ,which was covered recently by Kate Seberano ,Nikki Costa and Mahalia Barnes daughter of Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes, if you never do another Aussie reaction do this one it's phenomenal and the backing band features some of Australia's best musicians .
Bloody Aussies claiming a Kiwi again lol. Jon Stevens played for Upper Hutt Tigers when he was growing up. My mate was his teammate and I've been to his parents place and seen his gold record for Noice Works hanging on their wall.
Hey Hey It’s Saturday was a variety show that went for decades on Australian TV. John Farnham was a regular guest on the show and he often showcased his new albums by singing some of the songs throughout the show. He had great fun on the show and fit in perfectly with the show’s funky sense of humour.
Kate Ceberano has had a successful career spanning over 40 years and 30 albums. She backed up the Models, then her own band I’m Talking before going solo with numerous hits. One of my favourites was just recently when she covered the Australian classic It’s A Real Thing with Nikka Costa and Mahalia Barnes daughter of legendary Jimmy Barnes.
Saw Kate at a open air concert near my home about 10 years ago, it was all fleetwood mac songs and my god she was incredible.I swear the audience was mesmerised lol. Speaking of her hits you can’t go past bedroom eyes. Pretty sure it was her biggest hit
Had the pleasure of meeting Kate whilst she was the face of Fringe. The most lovely & down to earth person you could meet. Met her brother Phil 2 years later (brilliant muso himself) - it clearly runs in the family. What a champ.
🎉🎉🎉🎉 So much talent in the 1992 version of Australia's Jesus Christ Superstar production. Check out Kate Ceberano with Mahalia Barnes and Nikka Costa in the Russell Morris cover of Real Thing. It is so so good. The first male singer was Jon Stevens, lead singer of the band Noiseworks. They were huge in the late 80's and 90's. And the next male singer with luscious blonde hair was John Farnham. Our 70's version of the production featured another John, by the name of John English and Marcia Hines. They were also 🌟
And Trevor White played Jesus. I saw the show in '75,,,, I was in 1st form and our music teacher/choir mistress took a group of us down to the old Capitol theatre in Sydney. It was the first time I'd ever been to a "real theatre" and the first time I'd ever seen a professional production, it was glorious to a 13 year old. For me, Jon English, as Judas Iscariot, was the bigger attraction,,, probably the start of my life long love of the dark and brooding "bad boy"...😏
That was great, that was fun. Hadn’t seen that before on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. Great cast, fantastic voices. I saw that show SuperStar live in Melbourne, and the 1970s version as well.
John Farnham also does a great rendition of Amazing Grace with his two back ground singers, Vanetta and Lindsay. It's really worth checking out. You'll love it. Have you done John singing Gethsemane from the JC Superstar live stage performance. It just shows he can really sing any genre including musical theatre. Loving your reactions guys. 😊
I absolutely loved seeing these in JesusChrist Superstar (including Angry Anderson too). It was amazing! I have loved JOhn Farnham forever and still get chills.
There were some interesting cast members there … One was Russell Morris seen in the green vest and Lindsay Field, longtime backup singer for John, sporting the very long hair. That note John holds is perfect. Jon Stevens is also a powerful; singer - more rocker than John. Kate is a superb singer. I think her heritage is part Hawaiian? Very exotic. Kate, Jon and John were all successful in their own right.
Congratulations........ I have recommended this video to at least 10 other reactors who push both John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes, but to my knowledge , none of them have listened. Kate has a superb solo career and Jon Stevens has his own brilliant career with rock band Noiseworks and everything he has done since. This Australian staging of Superstar in 1993/4 was a little different in that they deliberately chose pop and rock stars to fill the major roles, but still used regular theatre artists for the chorus etc.
Blue shirt & green vest i the choir is Russell Morris. If you have time for early psychedelic stuff look for The Real Thing. It knocked us over when it was released.
Thanks guys! Kate Cerberano (pronounced Serbrahno) is world class but we got to keep her here. The extra was fab. Love you guys - you make me laugh; you make me smile.❤
John, Kate & Jon are amazing.. I’d you want more look up Delta Goodrem, Kate Ceberano & Jon Steven’s in Deltas 2023 Christmas concert performing a “Jesus Christ Superstar Medley” super amazing and the performance Delta & Jon give after WOW, high energy
This, in case you don't know, is from the Rock Opera "Jesus Christ Superstar". Kate plays the role of Mary Magdalene, John Farnham plays Jesus and John Stevens is Judas.
I saw JCS with Trevor White & Jon English in 1973, a school excursion. Then saw the '92 version with these guys. The '92 version was definitely my favourite
There is another clip from Hey Hey It’s Saturday where they ask Tom Jones and John Farnham to sing Tom’s hit My Yiddishe Momme and it is funny and lovely. I think it was the first time they sang together but they were good and became really good friends. Tom popped up on a big screen behind John at a concert to sing Happy Birthday for John’s 50th because. He was doing a concert and couldn’t come. There is an earlier version of JCSS with Marcia Hines and Jon English. Marcia was sent from America to audition for Hair. She was only 16, the youngest in the show and she didn’t know she was pregnant. She just celebrated 50 years of singing this week and her daughter Denny sings well too. Marcia never went back, she sings some great rock songs I love. Jon English came from England and I loved him because we grew up in the same town in Sydney that I did. It was never quiet if you lived near Jon’s house. Jon had a fall on tour and was in hospital where they found he had an Aortic Aneurysm. He had minor surgery and everyone was told he was doing well. Then a couple of hours later he was gone. He did some really great work over the years as did Marcia. All 4 of Jon’s children’s names started with a J and lots of nieces and nephew’s did too. He made me laugh. Thank you for this and it was lovely seeing Kate again.
Thank you so much! I saw this performance twice in Sydney. This is my favourite song from Jesus Christ Superstar. I forgot about this from Hey Hey, love it!
Hey guys, so you know there has been an update on Farnsey's health today 07/24/23 by his son Robert and his manager's wisow Gaynor Wheatley which you can search on RU-vid. He is now cancer free and apparently has been singing and walking his dog. Cheers!!
We were so lucky to have so much amazing talent cast in the Australian 1992 cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. John Farnham as Jesus, Jon Stevens as Judas, Angry Anderson as Herod and the amazing and gorgeous Kate Ceberano as Mary Magdalene. As you can see, the rest of the cast was spectacular as well. I still have the soundtrack at home.
TY mel, What great memories of seeing John Kate and Jon in Jesus Christ Superstar, it was a brilliant production, I also loved Tim Minchin as Judas in his production so TYVM Hugs Mel Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎶🎶🎶🎶💖💖💖💖
Great reaction. I remember going to see this production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and it was the most amazing production! Really enjoyed seeing this again after all those years, thank you.
This production of Jesus Christ Superstar was so different when it was put together. the music production was contemporary , and the wardrobe did away with the traditional robes, etc of the classic JCS era.. David Hirschfeldfer from John Farnham';s band and Stuart Fraser from Jon Steven's band (Noiseworks ) were in the JCS orchestra . The stage was actually a centre 360 view . Its worth checking out the whole concert as it gives this classic rock opera an adrenalin shot .
Have u checked out Hey Hey It's Saturday vids yet? Plucka Duck. Red Faces. Dicky Knee... & so much more. Started as a Saturday morning kids show... & the adults laughed probably more than the kids, then it went to Saturday night for many years. Very funny show with great music on it. Willy, that was mentioned, is a great Aussie muso named Wilbur Wilde. Kate Ceberano has awesome music, is great live, & the same for Jon Stevens. Had the pleasure to see both live in the one show. x
Kate Ceberano first came to prominence singing back-up vocals with Melbourne, Australia band "Models", who had a hit in 1985's "Out of Mind, Out of Sight", before she found fame with her funk band I'm Talking. I'm Talking are acknowledged as the band "who pioneered New York-style art pop in Australia during the Jurassic Period of Pub Rock". a TOUGH gig haha..
Love that U love spiderbait they are from Perth Western Australia where I'm from in the 2000s we had an explosion of music as we are so isolated it was like the world woke up other Perth bands are karnivool, birds of Toyko, baby animals, eskimo Joe, jebadiah, tame impala, drapht, John butler trio and I could go and on
Check out hey hey with John Farnham. He was often on it, and there is some very funny clips. Also a medley of the songs he has done on there. Brilliant.
Just in case nobody has mentioned it yet - John was clearly THE BEST JC ever.... Kate was Mary Magdalene... the seductress.... Jon was Judas.... the betrayer.... this show was epic...it was live in the round on a revolving stage... there's a live version of Gethsemane ... all of them kill it....
that song amazing grace was written by john newton. he was a religious parson but read all the words of the song. and then be aware that in an earlier life newton was a slave trader.
Ahh you guys have reacted to this 🤦♂️ You should check out Elly-May Barnes. Jimmy’s lesser known daughter, very different but equally awesome. Check her out on the episode of Australian Story. She is s fantastic artist in her own right and deserves a look-see.
Loved their performance of the whole Jesus Christ superstar stage show, am often disappointed with reworked music from the past, but not with that one.
