This Is Australia - Great Southern Land
• This Is Australia - Gr...
Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north; the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.
For at least 40,000 years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who belonged to one or more of roughly 250 language groups. After discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was explored and an additional five self-governing Crown Colonies were established.
On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system which functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. The federation comprises six states and several territories. The population of 22.7 million is heavily concentrated in the Eastern states and is highly urbanised.
A highly developed country, Australia is the world's thirteenth largest economy and has the world's sixth-highest per capita income. Australia's military expenditure is the world's twelfth largest. With the second-highest human development index globally, Australia ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance, such as quality of life, health, education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australia is a member of the G20, OECD, WTO, APEC, UN, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, and the Pacific Islands Forum.
Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Observed annually on 26 January, it marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove and raising of the Union Flag by Arthur Phillip following days of exploration of Port Jackson in New South Wales. Wikipedia

@@barbaraives5751 You can do surprisingly a lot of things that does not cost a lot of money. I come from an average six person family (2 boys and 2 girls - product of the sixties). When I was younger we travelled along the eastern coast fruit picking. Citrus fruits, rock melons and watermelons in rural Queensland in a place called Mundubberra, Pear, Apples and stone fruits in Mildura (near Shepparton) in Victoria. While touring we also fossicked for Sapphires, Emeralds, Gold and other precious rocks, Prawn fishing in Tathra while seeing a lot of the sights. Also had a lot of pets growing up crows, penny turtles, possums, galahs, cockatoo, baby hares as well as your typical cats, dogs and Budgies. With kangaroos they are not commonly seen in city areas (it can happen more near bush areas), it is not uncommon in more rural areas for them to be grazing in your backyard, along with other native flora. Where I work there is often Kookaburras, a possum nesting in the fork of the tree, water dragons, the occasional python and various other birds, while some roads travelling to work there may be a Koala in the tree or walking across the road.

Do we do these things, you ask? Yeah! Come to Australia! I live in inner city Brisbane in Queensland. Here's what's in a 1 hour radius from me (if I drive): South: beaches, whale watching. North: more beaches, the Glasshouse Mountains. West: country plains and yes, there's a camel farm. East: snorkelling, 4WDing on a sand island, swimming with dolphins. South-west and north-west hinterlands: rainforests and waterfalls that you can swim under, mountain townships and wineries.

Every year, usually around September, (Spring time), in Alice Springs, they have the Henley-on-Todd Regatta. What makes this different from any other boat race is the Todd River is dry. The "boats" are just a metal frame with some advertising banners around the outside. The occupants run through the dry river bed carrying their "boat". It was actually cancelled one year because the river flooded. People travel from far and wide to attend. It's quite the carnival atmosphere...to say the least.

The camels were introduced in the 1800's to help with the exploration and settlement of the center of Australia and ended up running wild. They are now harvested for meat and we also now export racing camels to the middle east. The kangaroo is a grazing animal, so you will only find them really where there is either grasslands or enough native cover to support them or in locations next to National parks, etc. There are big species (Eastern Grey, Red Kangaroo), medium size ones (wallabies) and small ones (Marsupial mouse, rat, etc). I have seen them wandering through suburban areas. We have a huge range of bird-life, reptiles, amphibians, sea life and most of the world's venomous things. They are all wild, not domesticated, so while most won't go out of their way to attack you, don't expect to be able to go up to them for a selfie. The boxing kangaroos are just trainers taking advantage of the way that 'roos fight, as they tend to grapple with their arms when the males are having dominance fights. Adding boxing gloves makes it look like they are boxing.

This song is off the album "Primitive Man" and written by Icehouse lead singer/guitarist Iva Davies and he pretty much performed all the instrumentation on his own for the recording of this track. Icehouse started off as the Flowers here in Australia but changed their name for the title of their debut album (Icehouse), due to a band called the Flowers already active in Scotland. Icehouse was huge down here in the 80s - especially in 1987 with their album "Man of Colours". If you get to Australia one day, I hope apart from the beaches and deserts, you will get to see the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. A lot of beautiful scenery of the Australian bush there - and seeing rainbows at the Three Sisters is awe inspiring.

Great Southern land was released by a band called Icehouse in 1982 right in the middle of the synthesizer popularity. I live in Melbourne and have seen one kangaroo in the suburbs about 14 km north of the CBD where I live. No one believed me until it was reported on the news as it had escaped from a wildlife sanctuary. You dont often see them in the cities but there are plenty roaming in the outer suburbs and obviously out bush, so about 30 km outside the cbd you will see them. Another time I went to a music gig at the St Andrews pub which is about 50 km from the city and when going home came face to face with a 6 ft roo on the other side of the low carpark fence 2 metres from my car. He stared me down for a few minutes then turned around and took off. Wish I had a camera.

Hey guys, Thanks for giving Oz some love. This song came out in the early 80s, I think, and was really different to a lot of other stuff that was around at the time, so it stood out. That video looked like a tourism video. Australia is roughly the same size as the whole US, but there's only about 25.7 million of us, so we're spread out a bit, and mostly around the edges on the east coast. If you live in the areas close to some of those attractions / features, then you obviously do some of those activities all of the time, but a lot of those things are thousands of kilometres apart. For example, people who live on the Gold Coast, just south of Brisbane (30-40min), but work in Brisbane (capital city of the state of Queensland), will surf in the morning, drive to Brisbane for work, drive home and surf again in the evening. The same is true on the beaches around Sydney (NSW), Melbourne (Victoria) and Perth (West Australia). The coral reefs are in the NE corner, off northern Queensland, so over 5000 km away from Perth. We have over 10 000 beaches around the coastline, but many of them are so remote, it's probably only the aboriginal / indigenous people who ever go to them.. The alps are in the SE corner and further inland from the coast (We actually have more snowfields than Switzerland, but only for a few months in winter). The deserts are in the middle and out to the west. The jungles are mostly in the far north. If you live further inland, in the country ('the bush'), you're probably living in farmlands, or in a mining town, so the populations are small, towns are small, and you are closer to the deserts or in very sparse countryside. Horse-riding, camels and all of the hunting, four-wheel-driving and camping activities are more common out there. With respect to kangaroos, I have seen the odd kangaroo stray into Brisbane city, when they get stuck on a major road and scared by the traffic, but it's pretty rare and makes the news when it happens. They are mostly out in more rural areas because they eat grass and live in large groups / mobs. The males 'box' - more like kick-boxing - they hang onto each other in a 'clinch' and try to kick each other in the stomach to work out the social hierarchy, because only the alpha male kangaroo in a mob will breed with the females. The young males are taught how to box by their mothers, but the females generally don't box each other. A kangaroo can cause severe internal damage if they kick you, and they can tear you open with their toe claws, so you have to be a bit careful around wild kangaroos and you don't make them feel threatened. In country areas, they will just come into your yard to eat your lawn because the grass is usually better. Pretty much every part of the country has something amazing in it, because it's only been colonised by Europeans for just over 200 years, so we haven't had time to screw everything up yet, Some of us are working hard on that, much to everyone else's displeasure. The aboriginal peoples had a fairly balanced relationship with the land for 70-120 000 years (Australian aboriginal cultures are apparently the oldest surviving cultures in the world), but even their stone-age culture did change the land and vegetation patterns, since they used fire to manage their hunting grounds, by deliberately starting bush-fires (forest fires) to clear out undergrowth.

Australia is about the same size as the contiguous United States. So it can be a bit of a distance between things lol but we do have some of the best beaches in the world, and it you went to a new one every day, it would take 30 years to see them all 👍🏻 and you guys are always welcome. 😊 kangaroos are everywhere and it’s not uncommon to see them in the suburbs( not a daily occurrence by any stretch) they can be big units standing over 6 feet tall and yeah they do box and kick. There's nothing more proud than being an Aussie when this song is played. It gives u tingles, a tear or two & the feeling of pride. This song is played at every venue across the country that the Aussie cricket team play at against whichever country or countries that's touring each year... This year being the 23/24 season, since our summer crosses from one year to another) i think the West Indies & Pakistan will be here to play against us. This song is the song that the Aussie team comes out on to the field to, whether batting or bowling. Sitting in the crowd on a scorching hot 40°C day, sitting in sweat, getting burnt alive no matter how much sunscreen u put on & how many times during the day u apply it as well drinking hot beer is what cricket is about for us Aussie's. Then when u hear this song blaring across the stadium over the loud speakers is when the goosebumps start & a tear is in ya eye. It makes u so proud to be an Aussie & that is how it effects us in the packed out crowd, i could only imagine what it must feel like for our cricketers walking out on to the field to this song, spine tingling 🇦🇺

Hey guys! Down here in Australia, u won't find any kangaroos (plural 😉) in major metropolitan suburbs (at least not where I am) but in the country/rural areas, they are a common sight. There are a few different species of kangaroo: the 6 foot tall red ones that look like they bench 100kg every day, live in the Outback regions of Australia, and I don't know a great deal about those, whereas my parents live in central Victoria and they often have a few brown, medium sized (4-5 foot tall) Roos just chillin' in the backyard! U do have to be careful though; if u keep your distance and there's not a whole lot of noise, they're pretty relaxed around ya! But if they feel threatened by you, they will scatter like cockroaches with the light turned on, or if u really piss them off, they may retaliate.

The wild life is unique, the people are generally laid back and welcoming. I live in Brisbane, to the south, the Gold Coast, to the north, the Sunshine Coast.
