Read the chat of the current Chopin Competition, every time someone plays the Andante and Grand Polonaise someone always recall Kate Liu's performance. This marvelous performance has become some sort of standard for this piece.

So true... I also watch the chat of the 18th Chopin Competition and there is always a comment of Kate's renditions of the antante spianato and the 4th ballade.. She is amazing.. So unique..!

I’m not surprised. She treats the Andante with the delicacy it deserves .. the delicacy I’m usually annoyed to find lacking.

To me, it has become the standard indeed. Technically almost perfect, but way beyond that, the style and respect of the sheet as well as the delicate details of every phrase is making this interpretation extremely remarkable. I can't get enough of listening to this!

one example of her brilliance: 10:18 and 10:20 are the same upward runs; the first is pedaled, forte and so smooth, the second time it is crisp and somehow almost staccato yet piannissimo (can you imagine playing staccato yet pianissimo at that speed???). same for the next two upward runs: 10:22 and 10:24. it evokes such great emotion this way -- memory, nostalgia, acceptance that passed time is done and final.
@satyu131089

A genius composer is at work here. Check out the run at 10:00 and the one you quoted. It's basically the same music, identical chord progression but presented differently as leaping sixths first and as arpeggio second. And the 10:18 is triplet notes, 10:20 is quadruplet notes with added notes to offer something new. If the artist is emotionally open, there's so much genius in Chopin's music to inspire him. And this artist is something special too!

This Polonaise is a a piece of Chopin music what acts like a nostalgic arrow aimed in the heart of the Polish soul. We can easily start crying listening to this tune... Kate Liu... She performed this essential theme in a virtuoso way but she gave us much more. She found a clue to mystery behind notes. It's everything here: the view of Polish bocage, enthusiasm of live and the sorrow of passage. All embroiled around familiar Polonaise sound what was so frequently performed at gentry's homes during winter evenings. Really - great appearance on the XVII Chopin competition. Congratulations!

She plays with the lightness of a butterfly but, I believe that, in addition to talent and sensitivity, there is an iron self-discipline that allows her to achieve these results. All my admiration and esteem. Suona con la leggerezza di una farfalla ma, credo che, oltre al talento e alla sensibilità, ci sia una ferrea autodisciplina che le consente di ottenere questi risultati. +liceous There are others who rival her in this competition. She has to have the recital of her life to win. I am interested which Chopin sonata she will play in the 3rd round. I hope it will be the opus 58. Cho and Lu are also breathtaking. No more cookie cutter robots. But pianist who are scary good. A few wrong notes can make the difference. You can no longer afford more than a few audible errors with these guys.

ADGO Wonderful. I hope she pulls it off. IMO, this is a masterpiece of epic proportions and pyrotechnical demands and you must have immense poetry, dynamic range and the most delicate nuances. IF she can pull it off, she will medal. But as we all know, anything can happen. I have never heard her play it. Let the best pianist win. I know who the top three front runners are after the 2nd round. They should make Chopin proud.

I’m no music critique but her polonaise is full of nostalgic sensitivity and delicate touches here and there. This is truly a world class performance! She really makes the piano sing. You can tell from her hands and fingers, so similar to those of some other world class pianists. They are built to conquer.

Close the eyes on the girl , forget the modern recording quality of today , and just get her tone ................... this is marvelous . There are very , very little pianists with this quality of softness , phrasing and flavour . Perhaps Von Sauer , Lhevinne , sometimes Friedman , and the very late Horowitz . Welcome in piano history , Mrs. Liu .

"Close the eyes on the girl ... and just get her tone..." Agreed, and the tone is wonderful, along with other aspects of her playing, without more. But then, I indulge myself and look at her! O.M.G.!!!

9:59 perfection (beginning of a miracle) 10:17 the miracle. Kate, I don't know if you hear me or not, but believe me, and I am very serious, these some bars by you will stay in history. You made at these very seconds a constellation between Lhevinne, Friedman and Lipatti. Who, who on earth is able to such a miracle ? Tell me, please ....

I obviously respect experienced musicians, as well as competition juries, who track down the slightest infidelity to the score; but, for my part, I am above all looking for emotion, which the ''live'', in classical music, almost always brings, and so I really need the personal touch of the interpreter, his mood of the day, of his personal emotion, especially when it comes to personalities as strong as Kate, whose playing is obviously ''mannered'', but never distorts the work of Chopin. Clearly, I prefer there to be a few discreet differences (sometimes voluntary), rather than having to deal with an ultra-slick and smooth disc, or the perfect execution of a score by a robot? In this respect, I find the present interpretation of the Andante Spianato by Kate Liu incomparable.
