Hello, I'm Katelyn Yackey. I'm a pediatrician. I've also practiced for the last 10 years in pediatric emergency medicine, and I love my job because I love the opportunity to take care of children and meet families where they are often in their worst moments in the ER, but also in primary care where I'm able to see them at their best and also help them get through everyday life.
I think one of the things that's unique about being a pediatrician is we have our patient, which is the child that's in front of us, and that can be any age from birth all the way up through often college. But the thing that we really focus on too is that it's not just the child we care for, but their parents and their family as a whole. And so I think that's a really fun part of the job.
It can be an interesting and sometimes challenging part of the job, but one that I really enjoy--working with families to make decisions about their child's health.
I have worked in the pediatric ER for the last 10 years. I'm a pediatrician-trained pediatric ER doctor, and in that setting I've been able to see kids coming in for all different sorts of needs, simple things from colds all the way up to the sickest of the sick, and I really have enjoyed that perspective. I think it makes me a better doctor to see all levels of illness and I'm excited for the opportunity to continue to care for kids when they need it most.
I'm from Kentucky. I grew up in Lexington, but I did spend some time in Louisville as a resident here at Norton Children's Hospital. I then left and went to Columbus, Ohio where I did my pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
I then spent the last seven years working in pediatric ER at UK and now I'm transferring to Norton Children's and I'm excited to continue to take care of Kentucky's children.
For fun, I like to be outside. I have chickens and two kids, and we love to play with our animals and run around outside, go into the creek and jumping on our trampoline.
Biography/ Philosophy of Care
Katelyn A. Yackey, M.D., is a pediatrician with Norton Children’s Emergency Medicine, affiliated with the UofL School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Dr. Yackey focuses on providing thorough and evidence-based care. Her goal is to care for her patients individually while also meeting the needs of their families.
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and playing with her pets.
