Katelyn could have made it to Gold in the olympics yes but she was so unhealthy and kept getting injured because of it. She was on a super strict barely eating type of diet and her coach completely messed with her mental health. Thankfully she found a loving and accepting place at UCLA and is much happier
She wasn't smiling because she was working the beam with a fractured vertibra, you will see her grab her left shoulder after the routine, she was in horrible pain.
@@jhaysonryanncorpuz817 She's said in interviews that she hated being in elite. She was constantly called fat and never be good enough, she was performing with a fractured back (I believe she also had a torn shoulder), she began hating herself. So, naturally, not everyone wants to stay in such a negative, hostile environment, it went on for years and years. She quit gymnastics because she hated it so much, until she found a coach who listened to her and had genuine care for her well-being, not just pushing her as hard as possible for every gold. I left for similar reasons. I had a massive shoulder injury requiring surgery, and was unable to use my arm for a year. I was called every name under the sun, mocked, criticized and humiliated from my own coach and team. I quit it all together, I couldn't take it anymore and I don't blame people for leaving and finding a different place (even if it's "easier"). Let people be happy. I don't see why so many people are criticizing her and others for dropping out of elite and moving on to other things.
If she was born a few months earlier, she would have brought home GOLD medals from London Such a talented gymnast but peaked and paced not at right time But I am glad that she is doing good in UCLA
She was just 15 at the time.. people were body shaming her! How could she be happy doing gymnastics when people keep saying she’s fat while she really isn’t. I’m glad she took a break and went to UCLA. It’s a perfect opportunity to meet new people and do what she loves.
I wonder if the body shaming was really a cover up for people's jealousy? Its clear she was no where near fat. It just seems like she was surrounded by a bunch of haters.
Hervin Balfour unfortunately in this sport even someone who is stick thin to us is considered ‘fat’ for the coaches. It wasn’t jealousy it also happened to MANY other gymnasts. They just had fun poking rude comments at them.
so glad she left elite, she hated elite (and hated herself when she was in elite). In this meet she looks so unhappy/stressed and looks like she's in pain...probably because she had a fractured back and torn shoulder but kept competing because she wanted to be the "best". Not worth the pain (physical or mental)
I'm someone overseas, so not aware of Katelyn until she went viral a couple of years ago. Then watching everything I could find. This breaks my heart. There is no joy, at all. Even after she completed the routine, stuck her dismount. Nothing. She looked like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders. You just want to hug her and tell her she's going to be just fine.
Yes, this was when all the girls (they weren't women) were being starved and stressed out by unrealistic expectations. The karolyis created such an abusive culture in women's gymnastics. They should be shunned forever.
she had the potential to go all the way...but performing a routine that difficult at the start of the new quad made no sense to me. Here Simone wasn't even close to what her level is now in 2015 and she's in perfect position because they paced her. I feel like they didn't pace Katelyn right at all.
So true. I am rewatching Simone in 2013 and it is tremendous how she is now. Her and her coach are very very smart in pacing Simone. Barring any injuries Simone would go all the way to Rio. I am praying for her good health. Many are actually concerned Simone is peaking now but I don't think so. She would still do upgrades. She hasn't even done a Cheng LOL
They give her such a hard time on the things she doesnt get perfectly. But they give her no credit on all the amazing and impressive flips she does perfectly
That coach of hers was nastia luikins dad and Kaitlyn was way better than nastia ever was, she is performing much more acrobatics on the beam. Nastia was elegant, tall and looked pretty but she was never as talented as Simone Biles and Kaitlyn.
And yet, nastia got to the Olympics. Whoever made the decision to put her with Valeri who tortured and abused her (verbally) should really regret that choice!
I think that's a typical response to female talent in general. Today in 2021, you can see the same crap being said about Simone's routines. Simone is literally inventing new things and pushing the field forward, but yet isn't allowed to claim social ownership of being a leader -- comments geared towards "oh, that's a 0.1 point deduction" in the face of literal dominance are just insane. Dollars to donuts that if Simone and Katelyn were men, they would not be mismanaged and today the world would be going crazy for 2 incredible gymnasts and would be given credit for their genius.
@@athens31415 Nope, this is how gymnastics is. You can go watch men's gymnastics and it's pretty much the same thing. In this sport, every tenth matters. For instance, I remember a 4-way tie on Bars in 2015 World's; it can be that close sometimes. Plus, things like broken connections really do matter because they decrease the difficulty start value (in her case, from 7.2 down). We also have to remember that the commentators are likely not as impressed by this stuff as we are, because not only do they see it all the time, but they themselves are accomplished gymnasts. And to be honest, they are literally paid to be nit-picky as their job is to basically explain gymnastics. They have to explain to the presumably inexperienced viewer mainly the skills the gymnast performs and specific deductions. This is because if the commentators only complimented the gymnast and she went on to get last place, the viewer would likely be very confused. But I also don't think they were that critical in this video in particular; the commentators were ALWAYS impressed with Ohashi. We even saw Nastia compliment her at 1:15, so I don't really know what you're on about.
I just realised, this score would have got her the bronze in Rio - it was the same as Laurie's score but Laurie had a higher E score so would've won the tiebreaker. At that point in the year/quad that's phenomenal. If only they'd paced her better!
To be fair her D score is 7.2 but they downgraded it cause she was nervous and failed the connections here. Her D score would be over 7.5 imo if she avoided injuries and kept upgrading it, but yes. That routine so early in the quad was insane.
Have her coaches (Liukin?) ever taken responsibility for what Katelyn went through in elite? I think we’re all so proud of her for finding joy at UCLA, and I hope she can leave the past in the past. I just think those responsible should have to answer for the pain she experienced so we know they won’t be able to do it again....
What’s sick are the parents who allow their kids to go into this environment where their weight and everything they do will be scrutinized and they would be injured and still forced to perform.
I know it’s sad and all, and I’m glad she’s doing so much better in UCLA, but can we take a moment to appreciate how good this beam routine is?! I mean, the mount alone is incredible!
Vanessa was already run into the ground when she got to Liukin. He coached her for like 3 months and she was absolutely hopeless by then (and I am a huge Vanessa fan). The Rybacki's ruined Vanessa, period.
@@waybackwhen101 True, but Bross is 100% Liukin's fault. The only gymnast that he didn't run into the ground was his own daughter, all the other successful WOGA gymnasts were training under different coaches.
@@waybackwhen101 To an extent, Valeri did make her feel slightly better about bars. But he was obsessed with helping her lose weight that he was using pretty extreme methods to do so, which caused her to have bulimia. I agree that Vanessa was already not in a good place, but overall, Valeri probably made it worse
Luiken is just a typical violent male that hates talented women. He's a fraud. Coaches like him need to be taken out of their jobs and banned from coaching women ever again.
No one have seen this girl after her injury. She was at the last american cup as a spectator. Have any body seen video or her training . Her last interview you can tell that her heart was not all that into gymnastics any more. She talked about searching for a college. Well i hope she surprises us with a comeback.
A few weeks ago on National Gymnastics day she had video of her layout full on beam series! I hope she comes back to elite I think she definitely can if she really wants it.
+sparx gurl All those injuries she suffered....she just could not compete at the elite level without enduring pain. So, she's moved on with her life, now part of the UCLA Women's Gymnastics Team.
Insane to see how much talent she had at that age. She woulda completely devastated the beam if she kept it up. Olympic medal no debating. Horrible coaches lost us a talent.
Katelyn Ohashi is an extraordinary person in life as well as in her gymnastics. I wish her all the Best that life has to offer her. She is one of the Greatest people & Gymnast ever.
I wish Katelyn Ohashi would've stayed in Elite competitions for a while... like from 2013-2016 at least. She could've easily received a medal on bars and beam, and even the All Around if she kept going
She kept getting injured, which is why she didn't stay in elite for that long. I think had they paced her properly and didn't go for such a huge routine right at the start of the new quad, she probably could've stayed in elite. They didn't pace her right at all.
I wish she could have held on to train at the elite level. She had that "look" that international judges just crave and could have been successful. Oh well. At least she is going to compete in college.
She stopped elite for many reasons, she was and still is very successful but she had injuries and she was almost broken by the coaches because of much she was pushed, she’s now happy and doing gymnastics which she loves with a strong support network and encouragement rather than other things. What’s important is her happiness. 100% support on this end
It's criminal how mismanaged and maltreated this girl was when she was performing here. Watching her in college, she looks like she's having so much more fun.
Luiken ruined another athlete. He pushes too hard and is stuck in 70's 80's era Soviet Gymnastics style. He destroyed Vanessa Atler's confidence, and she was first in a long line...
I come back to this video once in a while just to see what the Elite Gymnastics World lost by not giving enough emotional and physical support to their athletes. She would have been at the top, if not for them.
