Kathleen Thompson a mother of six was likely to have been on her knees when she was shot dead in the back garden of her Derry home in 1971, an inquest has been told.
Kathleen Thompson died in disputed circumstances during an Army raid in the Creggan estate and her death is the subject of a fresh inquest.
Pathologist Prof Jack Crane told the coroner that Mrs Thompson was hit by a bullet fired from an elevated position.
He said he believed she was in a kneeling position at the time.
'Direct hit'
Members of the Army's Royal Green Jackets Regiment were carrying out the search and arrest operation close to Mrs Thompson's home on 6 November 1971 - the night she was shot dead.
Soldier D, accepted the possibility that she may have been killed by one of two shots he fired from his SLR rifle.
Soldier D said he saw a gunman in the area and aimed and shot at the target after he personally had come under fire.
On the fourth day of the inquest, Prof Crane said Mrs Thompson had sustained a direct hit from a high-velocity bullet and died from internal injuries this has caused.
The pathologist explained that the bullet struck her left collar bone and then travelled through her body, fracturing some of her left ribs, causing extensive lacerations to her lungs and damaging her eighth right rib before exiting from the right side of her body.
'Not a ricochet'
He said her death would not have been instantaneous and it was possible that she screamed after she had been shot.
"Given the nature of the entrance wound in this case it would suggest that the bullet was probably undamaged, was not a ricochet nor had it struck an intermediate target after firing", he told the coroner.
Prof Crane added it was not known if the bullet had fragmented inside Mrs Thompson's body because "there is no bullet," nor was Mrs Thompson's body X-rayed for bullet fragments.
"The injury was consistent with a high-velocity bullet. It is less likely, but slightly possible, that a low-velocity bullet could have caused her injury", he added.
Another expert witness, Home Office forensic pathologist Dr Russell Delaney, also said he too believed it was more likely that Mrs Thompson had been struck by a high-velocity projectile.
'Capable of movement'
Having examined all available documentation, Dr Delaney agreed it was a direct hit rather than a ricochet.
He added that her death was not instant and Mrs Thompson might have been capable of some movement after she was shot.
Dr Delaney said for that reason he could not say what position she was in when she was shot.

What if you've not got a side? Do you condone violence if you're just randomly violent?

A silly boy stuffed in a uniform carrying a gun, being a clumsy part of a so-called professional army, once again killed an innocent bystander and somebody elses Mom. That his own may be very very "proud" of her little hero!

I don't know why its so difficult for people to understand why the IRA were formed. The Catholics had no chance with a loyalist police force and the "British" army who are obviously on Britain's side and also the paramilitaries on the loyalist side. They must have thought Catholics were going to just get up and leave their own country. They didnt reckon on their patrionism .🇮🇪The British have a lot more blood on their hands that anyone will ever know. Well done on the remastering of these programs. They make my blood boil 😡 but I want to know more than my wee Republican granny told me 🥰

The Briish Army had no place being in many places that it stole as part of its Empire. Northern Ireland was another example of this. I am English before anyone asks.

Were these shows only on in Ireland or were they also broadcast in England? I ask because I have never heard of any of these cases being English. That DUP guy is disingenuous. Totally understandable why the family did not pursue justice during the height of the troubles while he makes it seem as though their interest is political now. If they had been that way inclined surely they would have allowed the IRA to make hay while the sun shines.

Why did they wait so long to seek justice for Kathleen? Jesus, Mary and Joseph...and I'm not blaspheming, as Grand da would say, I'm askin' for help...because SURELY that eejit man could do the math: it took time for Kathleen's children to grow up. The adults in the family were terrified for the children...things happened to people, even very young people, who challenged how the British did things. The least harm that would have come to the kids would likely have been confinement in an internment camp...and plenty of bad things happened in such places. Sanitation and food weren't the best, disease flourished in crowded quarters and those who ran the camps were in no particular hurry to fetch a doctor for a sick child...then, there were the things that predatory individuals like to do when they have absolute power over vulnerable children or young women. Waiting this long to demand answers would have been very hard for the family...but they had Kathleen's precious children to protect. It took courage to swallow their outrage...and courage like that takes a toll on people. How dare the man frame the situation so cynically, implying things about the family waiting so long that essentially blame THEM for the lack of answers rather than placing the blame on those who made inquiry essentially a suicidal pursuit. My belief is that this might well have been an assassination rather than an accidental shooting being covered up. Those who stood for civil rights in those days might as well have had targets painted on them..."accidents" were not uncommon. The soldier was protected because he was following orders to neutralize someone whose ideals made her problematic to the British and those who supported them, not because he accidentally killed an unarmed woman.

@@ATroubledLand Thank you. My grand da always said that when we give our outrage a voice, we should make it a clear, frank and unequivocal one. I wish I were half as good at stating a case as he was.

If it is not investigated, it will only live on for the next century as another example of British culpability and cruelty through word and f mouth, novels or film. Whereas an investigation could bring out a more nuanced and maybe less judgmental conclusion or at least an opportunity for the British to apologise
