Kathmandu - The Side of Nepal They Don't Show You 

At 9:17, they are not eating. They are performing a ritual called "Shraddha" in honour of dead ancestor. The ritual is performed by the son for their deceased parents and grandparents every year as per sanskrit calendar. The ritual can be done in home or holy place. The foods you see are offerred to the "Pandits" Hindu Preist who guide them while doing ritual. The man wearing white color dhoti (clothes) is the son where another person in Dhaka Topi is Pandit

I visited Kathmandu when I was 21, I'm now 54. I have a picture with my daughter in a carrier on my back at the age of 18 months, (she is now 34 and a mother of a three year old herself!) climbing the stairs lined with lions. Not a lot has changed, except the mass of wires above your heads! This was one of the best tours of Kathmandu and I loved the way you spoke about their culture. The one thing that broke my heart was with the funeral priers. You spoke about their belief of washing the bodies before burning them, yet you failed to mention or follow the belief that a burning body should not be filmed/photographed as it is considered to trap the spirit on the earthly plain 😢 Other than that this was a very enjoyable trip down memory lane.

9:15 - That’s not the picnic. It’s one of hindus rituals where offering to their ancestors is done. you could’ve asked some locals before posting. Beside that I enjoyed ur content as always. Keep it up. 😊

9:14 The people on the other side, half naked man wearing a long white piece of cloth is called "Dhoti" and another group of people on higher platform, are performing a Hindu cermony called 'Shraddha'. It means remembering the dead member of your family, and offering them 'Pindda', a rice ball, and it is believed that the dead get to eat it in heaven.

Thats not picnic..Thats offering to the dead....

I lived there a long time ago. It has changed tremendously from what I saw in your video. I wouldn't know it today. Except for the kind and lovely faces of the people. That hasn't changed.

We were there a month ago. Absolutely amazing place. Loved your video. We were told those people at the ghats were celebrating/ remembering the passing of their loved ones and do it each year.

In 1967 I was on a flight from New Delhi to Kathmandu. We landed on a grass landing strip at the little airport after buzzing the field to get the cows out of the way. I stayed in a hotel that looked like Marco Polo could’ve been there. Kathmandu was very exotic there was a medieval feel the whole place. It had been a closed kingdom until around 1964. I spent a week riding creaky buses to the end of the lines and got kind of close to Everest. Trecking was just beginning to boom and I enjoyed sharing time with them. I was not equipped to join them as I had limited time. The English presence was represented by Guinness, the almost only western beer available.

I visited Kathmandu and Bhaktapur and was fascinated with temples. I uploaded a few videos with my excitement. I found that these shape of pagodas is different from those in temples in Japan.

The beauty of these kind of open cremation is it greatly humbles you when you are reminded everyone dies and when it's your turn to put your loved ones there it gives you sense of you are not the only one who has lost a loved one when you see someone else 10' apart doing the same thing to there loved ones

Go to Pokhara maté Kathmandu is so difficult and dirty city too many beggars everywhere from india 😢 Pokhara is perfect I was there last year ❤ loved the people so helpful

9:23, they were not partying or eating on the other side of the river. They are there for death anniversary of their loved ones. A ceremony which is performed near the holy place, so that their loved ones who left earth are better.

@ the 10:15 minutes where you mention feeling funny about the banks being there "to give loans to people", its actually where the offerrings to the temple by the people are collected and secured, because that largely contributes to how the temples are kept up and maintained.

Great video and editing. What you showed in the video was nothing more than the most popular tourist sites though. i did many days of discovering Kathmandu before and after my Everest Base Camp trek in 2017. So wonderful city and so different from all other big cities that I have visited.

You guys visited another side of swayambhu. Many tourists don't go to that place. Those low hanging wires are mostly TV cable internet cable or telephone line. Electricity wire is up high.

On the 9:06 minutes you mention them having a picnic, but that's Not what it looks like. Although it looks like they are sitting around some food, it's actually a ritual where they are offering their respects to the dead and ancestors, it's called "Shraddha".

well welcome to Nepal .the ceremony going on the other side of the river ,other side of the cremation ,was not a picnic but infact what we call karmakanda meaning the ceremonies performed by the realtives esp the sons of the dead. They are performing rites to ensure their dead ones go to heaven and find peace

I spent 2 weeks in Kathmandu and it is absolutely stunning and amazing but you must be prepared for hustlers and beggars at all times, when I arrived I booked a taxi and the driver insisted that I went to his friends office to “get some information” on tourist attractions, when I arrived there the guy wrote out a 10 day itinerary for me including expensive helicopter trips to Everest for thousands of euros. When I said no he was like “it’s fine put it on your credit card and pay for it later!” I left without handing over any money but they kept harassing me on WhatsApp and it was awkward walking down the street near my hotel because the office was nearby. Whenever I went to see a temple I was followed around by people who wanted to be my tour guide, or sell me ganja 😅 and it seems that every rickshaw driver is also a drug dealer. I bought a beautiful piece of art at the Thangka Art school shop and the guy invited me to his home to have dinner with his family… I gave him my phone number which was a big mistake because he kept calling me and begging for money 😞 also I had explosive diarrhea for several weeks! Apart from that it was a lot of fun 😂😂 much love to Nepal, ❤

While i was watching your video, you are been heard saying "Groups of people having picnic" at around 9:10 . Actually that is not a picnic, they are conducting ceremony with the help of Priest remembering their loved one who has passed away. It is believed that when it is performed at the bank of the river in holy place their soul would be free leading to liberation.

I went in Feb this year, 35 years after my initial only visit there. the country has changed a lot. Katmandu itself is not the magic city it used to be but turned into a polluting noisy dangerous motorbike racing track. Even the treks are changed since they built paths to drive a little bit everywhere. But the most and that is happening everywhere indeed is the iPhone that brought the rest of the world to the people there. So it is good overall for the country but it is definitely not the same experience of being somewhere very special any more.

That's the holiday type that I like. Been to India many times, though.
