I’m so glad you’re sympathetic to Katniss because i think sometimes people forget that she’s only 16-18 throughout the series. (Also you laughing every time it cuts to Gale during the PeetaKatniss scenes is so funny and so real 😭)

I think Haymitch gave Finnick HIS bracelet to show Katniss he was an approved aly. He knew Katniss wouldn't agree to partner up with or trust Finnick without it. I also think that is why he gave Finnick the "remember who the real enemy is" line to use if she was about to turn on the group. He needed someone to be able to pull her back from the edge if she was about to go too far. He is genuinely a really good mentor and protector to her, even if he DID fail Peeta and her by not getting him out as well.

Not sure If anybody has written about it: they didn't show it in a movie but Katniss is very shy and feels uncomfortable around nudity or expression of feelings, there is the whole part about it when she has to tend to Peeta in the first book and has to undress him. That's why other tributes act strange around her in the beginning (Finnik with a sugar cube, Joana undressing, big guy kissing her and etc.) they are all teasing her 😅

Also, they all know they are about to risk their lives for her, they deserve to tease her just a bit.

The thing about Katniss is that at the beginning of the series, she's actually not romantically interested in anyone. Her father died in the mine explosion and her life has been solely focussed on keeping her family alive and together. She has no desire to marry or have kids, because she refuses to have any hypothetical children of hers stand in the reaping or be in the Games. Katniss is already traumatized long before she volunteerd for the Game, by hunger, starvation, and grinding brutal poverty. She doesn't have time, interest, or desire for relationships. If Prim hadn't been chosen, and Katniss had not been swept up by the Games, she probably would have never married, and probably spent the latter part of her life as a reclusie, running a booth and trading at the Hob. But then the 74th Annual Hunger Games happened...and everything changed.

For me, Mags is a sadder one than Rue, and it's because she KNEW she had no opportunity, she knew it was over, but she volunteered on behalf of Annie, Finnick's girlfriend who still has very deep PTSD from her games. She volunteered to save her beloved friend, she volunteered to let Finnick save Peeta, all after so many decades of thinking she was safe. She just wanted the best for her friends, even if that meant her secure death.

Something that took me a few rewatches to catch is that the person who started the riot in the last movie right after rue died was most likely her dad. Also the 3 finger salute originated in district 12, it was used at funerals as a sign of goodbyes. The first time the rest of panam saw it was when katniss got reaped. Snow considers it a sign of rebellion outside of district 12, so that’s why the old man in 11 was punished.
@stephanienicole9324
@stephanienicole9324 Год назад
The man in 11 in the first movie being Rue's dad makes so much sense, not just because he was obviously the first one to get upset and start the riot, but also because when Katniss and Peeta are on tour in this one, only Rue's mom and siblings are standing on the platform. (And since it would be hard for a single mom to provide for so many young children in a poor district like 11, there would have to have been a man of the family up until recent times.)

Something I think is an extra layer of social commentary that I haven’t seen many people pick up on or acknowledge in videos at least is the outrage the people of the capital feel when they believe Katniss is pregnant and they want the games to be canceled. Which is ironic since every year for the last 74 years they’ve literally been sending children to their deaths for the sake of entertainment.

One problem with Gale is that he is always trying to manipulate Katniss to be what he wants, whether it be refusing to flee with her unless she says she loves him or pushing her to be the leader of the rebellion. However Peeta accepts Katniss as she is and let's her decide matters for herself. When he realizes that Katniss has bigger things to worry about than who she loves he backs off whereas Gale increases the pressure. It's not that what Gale says isn't sometimes true but how he goes about expressing it is wrong because he has his own agenda. In addition there is something to be said for how absolutely selfless Peeta is. On the beach in the book Katniss says Peeta is giving her both his life and Gale at the same time, basically letting her know it's okay to move on, to be with Gale, to marry him. I truly don't believe Gale would have done the same. It's this that causes Katniss to see just how much she needs Peeta and to finally realize just how deep and real her feelings for him are.

I just wanted to add my take on why Gale has become so hated in more recent times. Most of us read the series when we were young teens and on a reread with todays standards in mind as well as just being more mature, Gale's personality especially in the books comes off as entitled and insensitive as far as a 'potential' romance goes. He's averagely a very good friend but his jealousy is scary. When I was younger I already much preferred Peeta but never hated Gale. My slight dislike for Gale only really started when the movies came out and a lot of people started hating on Peeta simply because they felt Liam Hemsworth was hotter. I still didn't really hate him. But I did a recent reread and there was a specific scene that really turned me off Gale in Catching Fire. It's the one where Katniss tells him she wants to run away with him and their families which is something that he's always wanted to do. He at first seems elated at the idea. But then he hears that Katniss intends to bring along, not just their families, but Haymitch and more notably Peeta too. He got so mad at the notion of Katniss caring about Peeta enough to not want him to stay behind and possibly die alone (as his family really did not care about him) that suddenly he's practically calling her a coward for wanting to escape when she has a 'duty' to the rebellion. And I get that. He believes in the rebellion but he was willing to leave it alone just moments ago and is now lecturing her and making her feel like crap. It's annoying. And obviously he's her closest friend and she does love him so him behaving this way is very painful. He becomes grumpy whenever Peeta's mentioned, he incessantly brings up the love triangle even though Katniss is clearly confused and uncomfortable and dealing with so much more important stuff. He makes her feel so bad about not liking him back that when he gets hurt and she almost loses him she blames herself and finally decides to force herself to pick him. On the contrary Peeta is always willing to do anything for her. He fully understands that she has a now complicated relationship with Gale and never puts pressure on her to pick him. When she mentions the running away scheme to him he immediately understands that of course Gale is coming too and Katniss really appreciates this. And even if he also feels they should join the rebellion, he respects her decision. Peeta is so comforting for her. As you saw he even added Gale to the locket. Gale would never do that and that makes me feel that Peeta truly loves her while Gale just thinks she essentially belongs to him. The difference between the two guys is crazy. Peeta literally looks like a saint in comparison and it makes it feel genuinely maddening when there are people screaming that she should be with the guy that acts entitled to her love just 'cause he helps her family and they've been best friends for years. Gale is not necessarily a bad dude (he even gets a bit less insane about her feelings for Peeta in the next book) but that attitude today is considered a red flag. Not to mention according to Katniss' inner monologue it feels like she has to force herself to give Gale affection unless he's like in total pain and she feels like she owes it to him where as with Peeta it's a natural tug inside of her chest. In the book she first mentions it when they kiss in the cave that there's this feeling deep inside that makes her want to keep kissing him. And in Catching fire when they're heading back to the games and she gets to stop forcing herself to be with Gale she literally describes getting to touch, hug and hold Peeta again as some kind of special treat. That forcing herself to stay away from him was torture and she regretted not savouring his presence more as she believes she will die soon. These types of thoughts are never mentioned about Gale since he's too busy making her feel terrible when she's around him for so much of the second book. Rant over. Sorry I got a bit carried away there. With all that said the love triangle wasn't supposed to even be a thing. Katniss says Gale could be her cousin several times in the book. I believe making him be into her was something the author was urged to include by her publisher since Twilight was the most popular YA book around when this was being written and the love triangle was a big part of Twilight's success.
@coexist617
@coexist617 Год назад
Totally agree with all of this. I really loved that the "love triangle" wasn't very present in the books. Obviously you get some of it from Gale and Peeta but not so much from Katniss. She's pretty clear throughout that she is not thinking about anything but making it from one day to the next and trying to keep everyone she loves breathing.

The fact that Effie’s character was brought to life even more than in the books is one of the reasons I love the movies. This one is soooo faithful to the book that it’s probably my favorite adaptation ever. The only thing that could’ve made it better would’ve been them showing Haymitch’s games like they describe them in the book as it’s more foreshadowing of what Katniss does at the end of the movie (Haymitch uses the force field to his advantage, too). I also like that you picked up on them all being sketchy around Katniss and Peeta, I had no clue and was in SHOCK at the end.

most of my issues with gale stem from how he treats katniss bcuz she didn’t reciprocate his feelings in the way he felt he was entitled to. i definitely empathize with him & understand why he wants to fight back. i don’t think he’s the devil like some fans do, but i do think the memes are hilarious 😂😂 i think another issue i have with him is that, though he certainly has his own trauma, he doesn’t really try to understand the unique brand of trauma that katniss went through. the pressure she’s under, the fact that she had to murder other kids just to return home, the fact that her life now belongs to the capitol… it’s a lot. the amount of tragedy this teenage girl has gone through is just heartbreaking 😭 ALSO one of my favorite moments is when the people of the capitol are angry, demanding for the games to be canceled bcuz they believe katniss to be pregnant, yet they’re completely fine with children as young as TWELVE fighting to the death… great commentary on things we see in our own society. 👀 i keep editing this comment, but i really wish they hadn’t omitted the fact that peeta is literally an amputee in post hunger games 😭 the injury to his leg in the first book was so severe it had to be removed, so he has a prosthetic in the next few installments. he struggles in these games bcuz of it; for example, he can’t run the way he used to. i feel like neglecting this plot point was a disservice to his character and explains why certain tasks were difficult for him (like getting through the fog) 😭

The thing I love about the “triangle” is that it cuts to something deeper than just romance. Peeta and Gale represent two dueling ideologies within Katniss-anger, rebellion, and fighting fire with fire, or peace, hope, and empathy. She of course had to stand up with the rebellion, but Peeta taught her to use diplomacy when possible and pay attention to nuance. That it wasn’t as simple as “us vs them.” Something Gale failed to distinguish, as evidenced in later movies (no spoilers of course!) Something they discussed in the books but not the movies is the fact that the day after Peeta threw her the bread, she saw the first dandelion poking up through the snow. It represented hope, and she always linked that to Peeta. He was her “dandelion in the spring.”

fun fact (or not so fun fact lol) for anyone who didn't read the books, they do a quarter quell every 25 years which means there is some twist to that years game. Haymitch competed in the 50th game which was the 2nd quarter quell and the twist for that game was that double the amount of tributes would be reaped, 2 boys and 2 girls from each district were chosen to compete. Haymitch had to win against 47 other people which is so messed up. although impressive that he survived that must have been such a harder thing to go through because the odds were even less in his favour than the years prior, I wished they touched on it more in the movies. Also, side note, your "I--what?" After the announcement of the quarter quell made me laugh extremely hard. They never explain it in the movies so everyone is always confused, but the quarter quell is the 25 year mark of all hunger games. I definitely agree, this is the best reaction I've seen of these films so far. President Snow does say in the film though, "This is the 75th year of the Hunger Games. It was written in the charter of the Games that every twenty-five years, there would be a Quarter Quell." But even if he hadn't said that, it's not difficult to figure out. We know the first movie showed the 74th Games, and a quarter is 25. This movie is 75 games. 3 divided into 75 is 25, so every 25 years, there's a special Hunger Games.

(This is probably going to be edited a lot as I watch the video.) It took me a while to notice, but in the first film, when Gale goes to talk to Katniss after she volunteered, he went in for a kiss but Katniss thought it was just a hug. And during that part where she has a flashback of killing Marvel, she doesn't start screaming until after she turned to look at Rue and Rue wasn't there like she expected. Even after seeing what the salute did to the people who held it up, Peeta went directly to Snow's mansion with it painted on his nails. When Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch are being escorted to the Justice Building, there's a three-second shot of a group of Hunger Games-aged children running to the square, which is a major contrast to the year prior where pretty much all of the kids were shuffling their feet because they didn't want to be there. It's such a normal thing to see kids running that it took a while for me to realize just how significant that is in the world of Panem. There was such a bittersweet relief in the districts that year, a lot of families not having to worry about their kid[s] getting chosen. I was hoping you got the aspect ratio change! It's really sad when Peeta says he has no one else that he cares about because back when the Quarter Quell was announced, there was a wide angle used facing Peeta from behind and he was completely alone. His entire family didn't care about him.

The writer doesn't necessarily add dialogue to make a point of it, but the action itself is there giving the people and thus the world personality of it's own. It's great world building to say the least. Thanks for pointing that out. After reading your comment, I went back to see what you were referring to regarding the ratio change and AHHHHH. I can't BELIEVE I missed that, I was so caught up in Cinna's beat down and the games beginning....sensory overload. I wonder who came up with the idea for the ratio change and whether or not that was something that had to be planned ahead of filming or completely done in post production.

@@michelleneedsahobby The director of this one filmed the entire Arena sequence with an IMAX camera. When Katniss wakes up on the plane after being rescued, it switches back suddenly to the aspect ratio from before she was sent in. Even that added depth because once I noticed it, it never stopped being jarring which is a great way to make the audience feel what Katniss is feeling. The color, the lighting, the set designs, the little details in costuming, and the extras that are usually just there to fill a scene with little to no real importance are helping build the world and even push the plot along. They're really not even extras at this point, because they're just as important to the plot now as Katniss is.

I watched Catching Fire in IMAX when it was released. The theater we went to had the true floor-to-ceiling wall screen. When the aspect changed even the curtains opened wider and it was REALLY significant. It felt like we went up into the arena with Katniss. We could feel the change. It’s seared into my memory.

you’re totally right about a conspiracy happening and how most of the tributes are in on it! beetee IS smart-he’s an absolute genius. when he hits the force field, he was essentially trying to do what katniss does in the end-which is why he leads them all to the lightning tree. he uses the “i’ll electrocute everyone on the beach” thing as a cover for his real plan so that the capitol won’t catch on (since they’re being broadcasted live). his plan from the beginning was to use his wire as it got charged by the lightning to destroy the arena + cut the power, and it’s amazing that katniss ultimately catches on to that without ever hearing him explain it! i can’t remember if this is properly explained in the book, but i think beetee strikes the force field prematurely (before the lightning) because of the pandemonium happening as the careers are still running around and now everyone’s screaming for each other. he was most likely going to wait for the lightning to hit at 12 before throwing the wired stick at the force field, but felt that he had no time to wait since the careers were coming to kill him. all of this + the political powerplays will be explained properly in the next two films; i’m so excited for you to see them!!

I think, from the middle, Peeta is doing pretty well. It is reasonable for him to be upset about the forced marriage to a woman he does actually love but he doesn't let that get in the way of what is necessary. I also have to say that when I read the books when I was younger, I preferred Gale for the first two books, precisely because he was in the middle of all the consequences of what Peeta and Katniss were doing. His aggressive radicalism made sense to me. Gale didn't face the awful fate they did but his life was hard and, before the games in the first film/book, his life was a lot harder then Peeta's. I did feel a lot of empathy for a radical inspired by an awful social position.

It's been ages since I read the books, but I think there's been 25 years approx between when Haymitch was in the games and when Katniss and Peeta come along. He has been a mentor all of those years, sending 2 people off to die essentially. Lived alone in the victor's village as well. It is just so messed up, and yet, there is so much in this that doesn't seem that farfetched. Out of all the movies, this is my favorite. :)

Btw, the Quarter Quell games are the ones that fall every 25 years❤the quote about them from the books is *"When the laws of the Games were laid out, they dictated that every twenty-five years the anniversary would be marked by a Quarter Quell. It would call for a glorified version of the Games to make fresh the memory of those killed by the districts' rebellion."* So, since this is the 75th year, this is the third Quarter Quell. These games are each different compared to the others, more brutal and difficult to watch. The 25th Quarter Quell made the citizens of each district vote for their tributes *"On the 25th anniversary, as a reminder to the rebels that their children were dying because of their choice to initiate violence, every district was made to hold an election and vote on the tributes that who would represent it."* and the 50th Quarter Quell, the one Haymitch won, required twice as many tributes. *"On the 50th anniversary, as a reminder that two rebels died for each Capitol citizen, every district was required to send twice as many tributes."*

bigggg thought dump dont mind me: i have a lot to say about gale in this movie cus his actions are.. less obviously bad than the ones that follow. the scene where katniss asks him to run away is one that i have Many strong feelings about. generally what i dont like about him is his pettiness, him constantly bringing up the romance and his own feelings when katniss is Clearly not in a state to discuss that, acting very entitled to her liking him back, and a general disregard for her feelings. i think this scene encapsulates all of that a lot. (mind that some of the stuff i say here are not things included in the movie, i dont remember exactly what is included and what isnt) gale is immediately put off when she confirms peeta will be coming along with them, also taking the opportunity to say that hes in love with her. when she tries to avoid the topic, is clearly uncomfortable with it, and states she doesnt feel the same, he gets even more upset and acts like she said something wrong. (katniss says things like “you know how i feel about you” and “maybe one day” here, which comes off to me like she is nervous and trying to not disappoint him) he then proceeds to get mad at her for wanting to run and saying shed be basically ruining the lives of everyone else by trying to protect her family. now, you cant hear her thoughts in the movie of course, but katniss is, to put it lightly, MISERABLE in this book. especially at the end. she thinks about how she wants to leave everything behind and how she thinks shed be better off dead like every other page. 😭 when she says something about this to gale, how she wishes shed eaten the berries, after he just made her feel horrible and guilty hes essentially like “no cuz then you wouldnt be able to lead the rebellion!! this is good actually!!” i get where hes coming from, i do. but how he handles this whole interaction always makes me angry idk. katniss never wanted to be a symbol of the rebellion or to have everyones lives on her shoulders. that doesnt mean she should neglect her responsibilities or anything, but she is not treated with like, any compassion by him and is made to feel bad for wanting to escape and for kissing another boy when her and gale were never in a relationship and she never even thought of him romantically before. OK OK LONG RANT OVER. whoops. regardless i realllyyy enjoy your reactions so far, u have a very very good perspective on things and are very good at analysis and picking up on smaller details!!! i just thought id leave my own thoughts down here too haha

That Kiss was OUT of the confines of the District, they weren't allowed our there, they regularly hunted and broke the law by doing so out there , to relatively little consequence. My Point Is, Beyond the Fence, there wasn't supposed to be camera's. President snow seeing that kiss wasn't just Snow knowing they had kissed, and that she wasn't in love with Peeta- That Kiss being known, meant that Katniss' escape her whole life where she felt safe, was not safe. Her entire life was always under surveillance. Snow doesnt just know they kissed once, he knows rhey grew up together and that bond is a lifelong love. (Albeit platonic.)

So to explain the birds, because you seem confused: The birds are called Jabberjays - basically the Capitol does a lot of animal genetic engineering, and the Jabberjays were an experiment during the war. They were used to record rebel conversations - until the rebels figured it out and started using them against the Capitol. This caused the Capitol to release the jabberjays into the wild, hoping they'd die out. Except they didn't. They mated with wild mockingbirds, creating the mockingjay - a bird that can mimic tunes perfectly, but not speech. And that's the real reason the mockingjay is used as a symbol of rebellion; because it's something the Capitol created by accident that they never intended. Exactly like Katniss.

One thing I don't think is mentioned in the movies is that Haymitch won the 50th Hunger Games, which were also a Quarter Quell. The twist that year was that *twice* the number of tributes were Reaped, two male and two female from each District, which means Haymitch had to beat out *47* other kids in order to win. The arena that year was *deadly* too. Incredibly beautiful, but everything in it was poisonous, and I mean *everything* . The only safe food and water came from the cornucopia or rainwater, besides those, something as simple as smelling a flower could get you killed. For the first Quarter Quell, the 25th games, instead of having a Reaping the Districts actually had to *vote* for which kids in their District would be the tributes, which is a whole other shade of twisted.

The movies did a really good job at staying true to the books for the most part, but THIS is the one thing I feel like they didn't cover well enough. There's this one specific scene they skipped that's crucial to fully understanding their tension at the start of this sequel. In the books, Peeta didn't know the romance during the 1st games was an act until he overheard a conversation between Haymitch and Katniss on their way home about how much she would or would not have to keep pretending at home, and planning for the tour that would come later that year. And it absolutely devastated him to learn she'd been lying and faking it *all* this time, even after they were out of the games. So he wasn't really being "petty" per se... just absolutely crushed by the one person he trusted most.
@mak_inthebox4817
@mak_inthebox4817 Год назад
Of course, you can't fault Katniss too much either because she did essentially the same thing-- she was completely clueless (and/or in denial) that his feelings were genuine. She thought it was a survival tactic he'd invented to get people to root for him/them. And it worked! Then when they got out, Haymitch explained the peril they were still in, so the charade continued. Her only singular motivation for everything she does through these books/movies is survival. Whether for herself or those she cares about, it's *only* about survival. Her only real fault was incorrectly assuming Peeta was operating under the same motivations.

Yeah, Haymitch REALLY didn’t have anyone. Snow had all of his loved ones killed for revenge after she used a trick to win his games. In his games he teamed up with fellow District 12 tribute Maysilee Donner. The two traveled to the edge of the arena, where Haymitch discovered the force field bounced back objects thrown at it. After Maysilee was killed, Haymitch faced off against the last remaining tribute, a girl from District 1. Although his opponent nearly got the upper hand, Haymitch outsmarted her by leading her to the force field and dodging her ax throw, causing it to bounce back and kill her. Snow viewed this as an act of rebellion, somehow.

Gale was not her bf and she survived when they did it so he shouldn’t pout so much 😒 but also I even tho she don’t fully admit it till the end I believe Katniss started having feelings for Peeta in the first game she just pushed them down or away or maybe didn’t fully know herself yet like Finnick said
