First time watching The Hunger Games Saga and I have to say I'm genuinely impressed. The themes of the series and how they handle them are spectacular. The movie tackles political themes beautifully and Jennifer Lawrence's performance as Katniss Everdeen really sells it to us.
Watch along in this movie reaction as I get to discover more of the world of Panem, the atrocities the Capitol is capable of and as Denise adds context in this adaptation from the books.
Woody Harrelson as Haymitch has definitely become one of our favorite things in this saga, and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta is just winning our hearts with every gesture. And of course, we have to talk about Jennifer Lawrence's electrifying performance as Katniss.
So far Catching Fire has been my favorite out of the two we've watched thus far. I'm really enjoying the sociopolitical commentary, the further exploration into the traumatic consequences of the first games for Katniss and Peeta, and how the Capitol will stop at nothing to diminish the early flames of the blooming rebellion. I can't wait to see what The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 brings to the table.
This film ends with a BANG and I can't wait to watch the next one! Mockingjay Part 1 Reaction • The Hunger Games: Mock...

The real Hunger Games is called Capitalism. You said you like how it mirrors politics in the real world. You don't realize how the system mirrors the real world. we live in the capital. The districts are all around you. your life is insulated from it largely and what you see on the news, the riots and unrest is just the small stuff. The real hunger games are harder to see, but how many children starved to death because of our decadent lifestyle? Look at all the small nice things of luxury you have around you and think how many people died of hunger because they could not feed themselves while we consume more and more useless things. The capital is real and it is the wealth we live in. I grew up in district 12 and even I am guilty of living the capital lifestyle now that I escaped. The real Hunger Games is called Capitalism.
@JonaRosalinaRose

Capital citizens beware. One day the districts will revolt in the real world too and when that happens you need to join in and overthrow the Hunger Games or fall with the system you enjoyed for too long.

@@OfficialMediaKnights I highly recommend, if you read often, reading the prequel to this series The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It is written from President Snow’s point of view when he enters the 10th games as a mentor. After reading, I feel I understand him much more and really just how twisted he is. It was NEVER an act for Peeta. So he didn’t “catch feelings,” they just grew stronger. The book makes it more clear that It wasn’t all an act for Katniss in the first games either, she just doesn’t verbalize it and fears that accepting her genuine feelings would just be giving in to what the Capitol wants. But as you saw in this movie, she slowly begins to accept her feelings and revel in his selfless love for her.

6:20 one thing I never picked up on over the many times i watched this movie, was that both of their favourite colours are the only colours in district 12. everything is dull and lifeless except for the trees katniss escapes to (green) and sunsets and the sky (orange), which are pretty much the only vibrant colours they have in their district. I like how sort of sweet that is, like why would they like purple or pink or whatnot if they are hardly ever faced with it except when it comes to the capitol? I think a lot of thought was put into their favourite colours alone, and I really respect that. All those other vibrant colours are associated with the Capitol and their ridiculousness and unnecessary riches, and sunset orange and a forest green is associated with their own personal lives.
@OfficialMediaKnights

Snow is a very threatening villain man. He’s not afraid to let Katniss know that he is completely aware of what’s happening and Sutherland brings such gravity and intimidation to the character.I can’t imagine anyone else as President Snow in all honesty. One of my favorite background arcs is Effie’s. Like, watching her become a little bit disillusioned and actually care about these kids is so cool. How reluctant she is to actually pull the names out of the bowl… Elizabeth eats up this role and gives her all and it’s amazing. Johanna may just be my favorite of this movie. I love, as horrible as it is, that because she literally has nothing to lose she gets to say and do whatever the frick she wants. Again, just got to shout out Jena Malone. She just goes for it! I mean, everything about Catching Fire is sooooo good. The new cast, the old cast, the writing, the directing, the effects! It’s literally a perfect sequel in my books.

I love how they capture the looney side of each tribute in this movie. They all have a screw that went missing in the games. Finnick with his numbness to death/killing, Annie with her paranoia, Chaff with his odd ways of meeting people, Johanna with her unstable brute anger, Katniss and Peeta with their nightmares, Wiress with her insanity, Beetee with his more stable insanity, Enobaria with her unnecessary thirst for violence. They're numb to violent situations, ptsd, want more violence, and don't know what fiction or reality is.

One thing that I like about this trilogy is that we can really feel the psychological weight that the Games (and Panem society) puts on everyone's shoulder. This trilogy is not relaxing to watch because the tension and the danger feels so real ; you are immersed with the characters, often in the dark, surrounded with threats, pacts, and secrets. You can't barely think ahead or say "they should do this" because everything is uncertain. Everyone looks like they are even afraid to breath and each second that passes, their lives can change for the worse.
@OfficialMediaKnights

Every 25 years, they hold “A Quarter Quell”, a specialized version of the Hunger Games. On the 1st one, as a reminder to the rebels that their children were dying because of their choice to initiate violence, every district was made to hold an election and vote on the tributes that who would represent it. Zenobia Rivendell won by using her sword and an asteroid killed everyone except her. On the 2nd one, as a reminder that two rebels died for every Capitol citizen, twice the number of regular tributes were to be sent as tribute: two girls and two boys per district, giving a total of 48 tributes. Haymitch Abernathy got his chest slashed open, but he wins by letting the other person throw an axe, dodge it and hit the force field, to fly back in the face. And the 3rd one, to remind all the districts that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the Capitol, each district reaped their tributes from their existing pool of victors (59 in total left).

In the books her and finick were both trafficked around the capital to wealthy citizens whose secrets could benefit snow and if they refused their families would be threatened. Johana's whole family was offed because she refused snows commands. it just adds a whole other layer to the story.

Maybe the most heart-wrenching thing in this one is that after the Jabberjay wedge, Johanna goes off on Snow, yelling at him, and making the rest of the group stare at her in shock. And then she drops the devastating news that the Capitol can't hurt her anymore because there is no one left that she loves. Tears me up inside every time, because Haymitch is in the same position she is.

THIS!!!! I honestly cannot remember if I mentioned that in our full version on Patreon, but if I didn't say it, I thought the exact same thing. People caring more about a fetus instead of actual living breathing children is so relevant to what is happening in the US (also globally). I will never be able to understand how people can turn away from children that are actually here and suffering. It's selective morality and it's so upsetting.

Ehhh...people aren't/haven't heartlessly put people on the front lines of war only to care when one of those people on the front lines is pregnant. Indeed the opposite, throughout all of history men almost exclusively have largely been wantonly thrown into battles repeatedly/cyclically. I think the relevance you're looking for is wasting people's lives and hard earnings in foreign places that have nothing to do with the country/people sending them, at the sake/cost of the people sending them, all for the personal profit and maintenance of power for the powers that be instead of using it justly for/on the people themselves whether "fetus" (Latin: fētus: offspring) or "already born" (aka offspring). Okay first thing. After they announce that it’ll be previous victors you can hear Katniss’ mother breakdown and my heart just breaks for her. All she wants is her family safe after losing her husband. Now she’ll lose her again because Katniss is the only female tribute. Second, these victors have had to do and say crazy things to appease the capitol (at least the ones with family). The capitol isn’t above killing family and making it look like an accident, Johanna and Haymitch can speak to that fact. Third, I believe it was mentioned briefly by Peeta in the books that he remembers their first day of school at age 5 and how he’d fallen for this girl with a pretty braid and the voice of a songbird. And it was Katniss, having the same beautiful voice as her father. So it was never and will never be an act. Which is what makes things so much harder and sadder as the books/movies continue with rebellion rising so desperately.

I read the first book when the first movie came out because I wanted to experience the original before going to see it, but reading Catching Fire is what truly hooked me on the series. I went into it expecting it to revolve around their victory tour and then that was finished within the first three chapters and I had NO idea what to expect for the rest of the book. Fantastic read and these movies are in my opinion one of the best book-to-movie adaptations out there.

I also really love that you two are such smart movie watchers, you catch all sorts of interesting things about camera angles and lighting and symbolism that I have probably only noticed on a subconscious level, and you speak them out so that I have to pay attention to them, which is really fun for me. I've watched these films dozens of times but I don't always pick up on this stuff consciously until someone points it out, so thank you for that.

Katniss Everdeen’s name is a callback to the heroine of Thomas Hardy’s “Far From the Madding Crowd”, Bathsheba Everdene. Bathsheba isn’t even thinking about marriage when she gets her first proposal, and isn’t interested in it when she gets her second from a different man. In both cases, she appreciates the men who are courting her; it’s just that she doesn’t need a relationship in order to be happy. Katniss is similar, but a little younger. She has never thought of her hunting partner Gail as a “boyfriend”, though she has kind of thought maybe someday they’d be married. It isn’t important to her so she doesn’t think about it. She doesn’t understand that Peeta could have real feelings for her because it’s just not where her head is at. She’s not a *reluctant* point on the love-triangle, she’s a *disinterested* one. So disinterested that she doesn’t recognize that there’s a triangle. Or a line. Or a square. It’s just not where her head is at. Bathsheba ends up with the right partner in the end and so does Katniss.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Год назад
This is such a wonderful analysis, thank you for sharing! Though I (Denise) have been a huge fan of the books for a veeery long time, I actually never knew that Katniss was inspired by Bathsheba! And it does align perfectly, as you already stated! It is very refreshing to see a heroine such as Katniss is more focused on her circumstances and duties rather than who she will end up with. Though love is important, it's such a joy to see a character not have their entire development be centered entirely on a love interest - it was but a fraction of Katniss' journey, not the whole!
@crairdin
@crairdin Год назад
@@OfficialMediaKnights Absolutely. If you think about it, the reader/viewer and the citizens of Panem are kind of led to believe that Katniss is deeply motivated or responding to the men in her life, but she's not. Then later, people come to believe she's deeply motivated by and interested in the success of the political rebellion, but she's not. Katniss is always about her family, primarily. I don't know where you are as of today in the movies, but it sounds like you've read the books. So I don't think it's any kind of spoiler to say that Katniss is all about protecting Prim - from the opening scene to the climax of MJ Part 2. None of the feelings that *we*, the reader/viewer try to assign to her, are more important to that and in some cases, she's not even aware of those aspects of what she's doing. One of Collins' most obvious literary references is in the name "Lucy Gray Baird" in "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". It's explained in the book but I don't want to spoil anything for you but that's worth looking up, too, when you get there.

I really wish the movies would have kept the Plutarch's watch scene.... where in the book, at the dance when they're introduced, Plutarch shows Katniss a watch that when you run your thumb over the face, a MockingJay appears briefly. It was a masterful bit of foreshadowing that wouldn't have taken but 10 seconds and they left it out.

Well, we know that Cato injured the girl severely and that Peeta went back. He may have "finished her off" more as a mercy killing, but what honestly makes more sense (consider the way we saw him comfort the tribute that saved his life in Catching Fire) is that he held that little girl's hand until she passed on her own. But I feel like it's more up for interpretation!

I remember when I first watched this movie (I hadn't read the book) that the water cleaning away the painful boils was interesting because... it wasn't lethal, and there was a quick way to remedy the Game Maker's addition. It didn't seem logical for that to happen under the watch of someone (Plutarch) who seemed very smart and good at Game Making. From what I can remember, that was the first thing that seemed unusual to me. After that, the Morphling sacrificing herself happened pretty quickly too, so I felt something was up but had no clue what.

Denise, you have such good taste. What I love about these films is how much they mirror our world and our history. It didn't strike me as much when I saw them a few years ago. Obviously, the Capitol has almost everything from ancient Rome: the floats, the first names, the make-up thanks to which Jennifer Lawrence looks so much like a peplum actress (she really looks like Elizbeth Taylor in Cleopatra)... Also, the adviser and philosopher Seneca was forced to commit suicide and Roman orgies involved vomiting to keep eating. But I also see slavery, especially in the United States, when Gale gets whipped. The conditions of the people in the districts starkly remind us of those of the miners and workers of the industrial revolution and their exploitation by capitalism. But we also find so much of our present: reality TV, video surveillance, peoples repressed by authoritarian regimes, political opponents imprisoned or eliminated, wars, bombed cities, genocides... Also, the actress who plays Johanna is also in Sucker Punch. Have you seen this movie? I must warn you that it is rather poorly rated by IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. I absolutely agree with these ratings in principle, but this film is an exception. I really liked it. It looks like a very beautiful and crazy video game, the story is really interesting and the music is great. I know you have a lot to see. But if you haven't seen it, I really think you might like it and you might want to add it to the list.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Год назад
Sandraaa, yet another amazing comment!! First of all thank youu ❤️. Secondly, yes!! This story has borrowed many elements from the Roman empire (Gladiators etc) but also from Battle Royale as well as take current day issues and interweave them into it! Another interesting aspect of this story is the way the people in Panem are forced to be desensitized to their own oppression by having it be their only conceivable reality. It's also eerie to see how casually the violence of the games are portrayed as entertainment - it is the weaponization of the other districts' oppression. They live in squalor, constantly starved and unable to afford the most basic necessities whilst Districts 1 and 2 have everything. This also is highlighted by how children in those districts see the Games more as a sport, a challenge to train for rather than a death sentence they must avoidz and if they can't, to use them as a means to survive. This sociopolitical commentary of this is incredibly smart and beautifully subtle and it's truly such an impactful story! Yesss, I did watch Sucker Punch and I actually thought it was quite creative/original. And Jenna Malone is a fantastic and versatile actress!!

I will go back and watch the watchalongs on patreon asap but for now i have no patience to wait until i'm less swamped so i must treat myself to these immediately as they come out. I have very disjointed thoughts but I really think this has impacted me even more and given me even more chills than when I first experienced it. Just getting older, I'm 33 now as opposed to 23, and going through more historical events and dealing with my own issues and trauma and etc. This somehow feels even more relevant now, and very very powerful. On a lighter note, that 'I play Battle Royales' comment ended me. As did 'maybe they're just misunderstood!!' I cannot waitttt for the Mockingjay 1 & 2 reactions, really looking forward to them, as per. I always hated how they played up the supposed love triangle angle in the movies, compared to the books where you of course were inside Katniss's head enough to know that she literally just does not have the mental capacity to deal with concepts like who she should be romantically involved with. She's literally in survival mode 100% of the time and she just has no time for things like worrying about who to have as a partner. Obvs she's not the sort of teenager who gets to think, "I wonder who should I should date? This boy or this?" Peeta is a part of her life because they shared something that she never shared with Gale, and Gale is a part of her life because she shares something with him that she never shared with Peeta, but she doesn't think of Gale as a romantic attachment (thats all him, she's too emotionally incoherent to know how she feels about him really) and with Peeta the romance is obviously something she had to play up for survival sake, and the feelings grow from that as she goes, but it’s just not even on her radar... which really says a lot more about living in survival mode, and it's so annoying to me that they skip that part. They were really good at showing a lot of subtle things in these films, so they could have gotten away with showing that as well somehow, but they decided to play it up instead and it pisses me off, because it becomes this narrative of her treating one of the guys badly or treating one of the other guys badly when she's really just trying to make it from one day to the next, and sometimes one hour to the next, and it shouldn't be about who she's dating and whether or not she's playing with their feelings, when she doesn't even know her own. End rant. On the other hand, like you said, they really got into the PTSD much more in this and subsequent films, and I think it's awesome and So Important, so poignant and so realistic. Like, a lot of people really hated that she broke down and cried in this film when she heard she was having to go back into the Games, and it really infuriated me that they got so upset; like we have this concept in our society that if you are supposedly "a strong person", you'll never break down and cry, and that's bullshit, and it's an assumption and a cultural belief that we need to break down and get rid of it if we don't want to lose more soldiers who come back and are falling apart like this, because if you found out that you had to go back into war after you thought that you were discharged, you would absolutely fall apart. There is no way you wouldn't, and her reaction is absolutely realistic and necessary, and I cannot *believe* that people were mad at her and thought it made her "less of a heroic character" that she cried about having to go back into combat. It just said so many negative things about our perceptions in the society and how deadly they are and how toxic they are, and I'm glad this film addresses it so directly. People say it less now, but it still infuriates the hell out of me all these years later.

Finally someone says it! There is no love triangle in the books. Katniss is so mentally broken that I doubt she is even capable of real love anymore. It is quite clear that she mistakes her need for them and her caring for them as loving them, but since it is not real love she cannot ever commit to it and is constantly confused. She doesn't even choose Peeta because she loves him but because she can't live without him
