Katniss And Snow Parallels 

I read something that stated a person's first thought is what they are conditioned to think, the second defines who you are. If we combine that with your video, Snow and Katniss foil each other in the order in which they think. Snow thinks kindness first and then chooses hate and violence to further his ambition. Katniss first prioritizes family and survival, but is willing to choose to sacrifice herself because of her compassion for the marginalized.

I think Snow sees the sibling he wanted and thought he would be to his own sister had she lived in Katniss. That’s why he seemingly respects her so much. It’s like playing chess with a better version of himself and what he could’ve been. Who he SHOULD’VE been. Even Katniss gets her Lucy in the end. That could’ve been Coryo’s life once upon a time.

I see a lot more similarities between Tigris and Katniss. Both are compassionate, both did what it took to survive and help their younger family members survive while trying to keep them innocent. I think if the shoe were on the other foot Tigris would have 100% volunteered for her younger cousin if his name was called in the HG. I also think he would have seen that compassion and empathy would have ended his vision because he grew up with Tigris. I don’t think he saw himself when he watched Katniss, I think he saw a young Tigris. He saw that and knew if the cruelty of the games was exposed, his reign would come to an end in a matter of time. Just my opinion 🙂

I think Snow saw Katniss as the daughter that he and Lucy would have had if they had stayed together. She has Lucy's passion for music and nature but thinks the same as him. Because of this, I think that a part of him genuinely liked Katniss and wanted them to be friends while another part of him genuinely wanted her to die. While Katniss may have been related to Lucy in some way, she had no biological connection to Snow, and since he didn't raise her, he couldn't take credit for any of her impressive qualities. She was a reminder of what he could've had.

Who Katniss allies with in Catching Fire tells me everything I need to know about her character. She chooses the slightly weird outcasts and I love he4 for that. Snow would never!

Hey, hi, hello! I have a theory that a lot of people disagree with, but in my head makes the most sense: I believe Katniss, Snow & Haymitch are all INFJs experiencing trauma differently. That is why Collins makes a point to connect the way Haymitch & Katniss think & also how Snow & Katniss think. INFJs function stack order is - 1. Introverted intuition - Ni (pattern recognition, filing system of human/nature behaviour, etc) 2. Extroverted feeling - Fe (saying feelings out loud, wanting to ensure other people are ok, etc) 3. Introverted thinking - Ti (not sharing her thoughts out loud, but keeping them to herself) & 4. Extroverted sensing - Se (engagement in the real world, what’s really happening, what’s really going on, what people are actually saying out loud or actions they’re doing). These are seriously juxtaposed by someone like Peeta, an ENFP, who sees them all & what they’re doing but has the confidence to do something bold. Hear me out, these are some identifiers for each of them & how it lead to where they are… Katniss: in Chapter 1 of THG we actually get told that Katniss is told to not feel her emotions or ask questions & we’re told that she’s been told she’s wrong a lot, especially about her intuition & feelings, even though it comes out she is largely correct throughout the books - questions are necessary for intuitive dominants to formulate their worldview. This is amplified through her fathers death & her mother not continuing to care for her & Prim. Katniss WANTS to care for Prim (Fe) & knows if she can’t pull it together they will have to go into a group home (Ni) so they must present themselves well. We see this downplay of her emotions/intuition continued by Gale who often belittles her & makes her feel stupid, so she chooses not to say too much & let him rant instead. We see how she connects the dots and patterns with Peeta & the bread & the dandelion & how it jogs her memories with her father (Ni-Ti loop they call this) & that this leads her to action (Se) in going hunting even though it’s dangerous because it solves her problem & gives her something to do. So Katniss has largely lived in her inferior function because she’s learnt her other functions are not safe by her environment. We see Katniss’ Fe outburst when Prim’s name is called & we hear her Ni-Ti loop while she’s platformed and everything going through her head & why she should present herself the way she is. Katniss figures out the only reason Haymitch is withholding water is because she is close enough to it to find it, etc. I could go on, but you get the point. Essentially Katniss’ trauma has made her think she’s invaluable & unlovable, so she finds it very hard to grapple with the fact that Peeta loves her. There’s also the inferior Se outburst in the training center when they’re not paying any attention to her and she shoots the apple out of the pigs mouth. Only an INFJ would do that because of their anger. I would also say while Katniss has been unloved & devalued, she knows deep down who she is and refuses to not act like herself, that’s why she freaks out in 13 when she feels unsafe & the things that keep her sane (eg hunting) are stripped away from her. That’s why she won’t follow their rules, she knows they’re wrong & trapping people. When Katniss is at her worst at the end of Mockingjay, she contemplates unaliving herself by ED. Both ways of escaping the reality she’s trapped in that seemingly have no other way out. Haymitch: it’s notable throughout the books that Haymitch is incredibly quick witted & smart even though he numbs himself with liquor. Haymitch was able to win the games without a district mentor which is no small fate when you think about his arena. He already had a plan going in (Ni) to find the edge of the arena & stuck to it because he felt there was a way to outsmart the Gamemakers (Ni-Ti loop). His whole arena plan hinged on this & also the way that he did not want to ally with tributes or get close to them for fear of having to kill an ally (Fe). That did not stop him from allying with Maysilee when she proved herself worthy (Fe) because he likely felt like he would be letting his district down & wouldn’t be able to return home knowing he’d done that. Haymitch also mourned Maysilee’s death just like Katniss mourned Rue (Fe). We also see Haymitch use his Ni with the force field to win the Games. When his family & girlfriend are murders afterwards, this would make Haymitch believe (after his experience in the arena), that everyone he loves will die & therefore he no longer extroverts his feelings. He continues to keep his intuition & thoughts to himself & is only able to engage through his Se by the time we get to THG 24 years later. That’s why Haymitch comes across so bitter, resentful, not wanting to help because he thinks if he chooses to love someone, they get murdered. To escape the real world (Se) Haymitch drinks. This is likely subconsciously because he knows what they’re doing to others in the Capitol & in the districts & truly does not want to participate in real life, but also cannot bare to see more kids die. It’s his way to escape reality while still being alive. Also fun Se outburst for Haymitch: when he punches Peeta for calling him out & then tells him to let it show so he looks tough. Snow: let’s start at his fathers death & the fact he grew up with a grandmother who was detached from reality, so severely that even he saw it & a cousin who, while kind & empathetic, he never truly looked up to. It’s evident early on in TBOSAS that Snow is unable to accept the world & predicament he has found himself in which is driving him to insanity. He’s definitely wise in that he knows what the Capitol wants because of the propaganda his grandmother believes & has instilled in him & he uses this knowledge to his advantage (Ni) & takes advantage of others in many different situations throughout the book. We also see that it’s his feeling of inadequacy because he wasn’t handed something he felt entitled to that is going to get the better of him. This is evident in the quote: “it’s the things we love the most that destroy us” & the way in which he engages with the idea of love with a district girl which he deep down thinks is vulgar but feels owed in some way because they mutually saved/destroyed each others lives/values. These juxtapositions really make me believe that by this stage of his life Snow was already fully living with NPD (narcissistic personality disorder) which is a way to escape his too messy reality. Snow is always in his Ni-Ti loop, calculating moves & counter moves & often being right about motives (Ni). He also appears to deep down want what’s best (when he was worried about where Tigris & his grandmother would live) for others (Fe) before what’s best for himself. This ultimately comes out through control & NPD much more harshly in THG trilogy. But it’s why he can see through both Katniss & Haymitch. He thinks just like them & they force him to return to a moral compass which he does not want to do. Hence Katniss shoots Coin before him to show him that even in his evil, he does have a choice to choose empathy. Snow inferior Se outburst: shooting towards Lucy Gray & killing all the mockingjays in their last meeting.
