It's not the worst of the bad. It's just really meh. 0s or Not Goods are aggravatingly bad. Katy just stayed in her lane and turned out stale. The reception is exacerbated by her coordination with questionable figure (tm).
Katy Perry fundamentally captures “cringe millennial” energy that was considered quirky and endearing 10-15 years ago that just comes across as tired and embarrassing now. I think it’s clear that she really was just a product of the time, and not the pop chameleon with her finger on the pulse of culture that maybe we expected from someone with as many hits that she had.
Never expected that. Anything she did after "I kissed a girl" felt like a labiratory created, sterile and heartless. It could be enjoyable from time to time but just like a fluke.
Her reuniting with Dr. Luke on this was the warning bell that this was not gonna go well. Can’t wait for Kesha’s re-recording of TiK ToK where she disses P. Diddy and hopefully Dr. Luke.
as if kesha didn’t lie and say katy was raped too pls. on top of that y’all need to worry about pedo gaga kissing on little kids while wearing lingerie.
Let this be a prime example that artists should be allowed to evolve and experiment instead of doing the same thing over and over again till they fade into obscurity
aint no one stopping her - her career is in the shadow of Madonna - so anyone thinking they need to keep doing the same thing instead of reinvention are delusional.
She never survived Lorde. Neither did P!nk, but at least she kind of accepted it. Katy Perry chasing the success of 2012 is making her seem out of touch and desperate. The only reason she’s working with Dr. Luke is because he was involved with her most successful music. When you chase your younger self and try to seem younger than you are, it’s off-putting. It’s giving Jennifer Lopez’s entire career vibes.
@@andre-cmyk I’d be pretty surprised but wouldn’t complain if Todd decided to give Katy two trainwreckords episodes before Metallica. Keep hoping for episodes on lulu and on kiss’ music from the elder
having 'never really over' in a best of list and wishing her 'good luck' at the end of the witness video. and still, Katy really fumbled any underdog goodwill she could've had
Katy really shot herself in the foot by working with Dr Luke again. People would forgive it being a bad album if she hadn't worked with him, and they'd probably forgive her working with him if the album had been good. Instead, she's ruined her, already shaky, reputation by making a bad album with a horrible person
Her working with him appears to be an attempt to get some kind of mainstream success again (hence running back to the producer of her biggest hits) which makes this album feel even more soulless😒.
Then doubling down in the face of criticism by making it unequivocally clear she WANTED to work with him, and have this abuser write lyrics on an album themed around woman's empowerment and experience
I don't think that has anything to do with it. Kim Petras worked with him and she seems to be liked. Also this is Katy's third bomb in a row. Comebacks are extremely rare in the music business so she's probably never going to score a big hit again.
@balldalt that's what I'm saying. People like Kim Petras' music, so they look past the fact that she works with him. If this album was good, it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but it was bad to begin with, so people are going to see the fact that she's working with Dr luke as more of a negative. The album was never going to be as big as her previous albums because of the previous flops, but the fact that she worked with Dr Luke and produced a terrible album did more to cement that legacy. If the album was exactly the same but with a different producer, it would just be another flop, but this is a flop and a bad moral judgment
- Released a widely acclaimed album - Has featured in several generic pop songs - Is in an Eminem song JID’s next album is getting a 7/10 from Anthony Fantano comfirmed
Not only is he in an Eminem song . He got the best feature on that Eminem album and pushed Em to step out of his hot and cold quality and drop his best verse in a decade
As a fan, this album really buried her career for me. Even in her darkest flop albums you can still hear Katy's intentions and appreciate the effort with a smile. This record feels nothing like that, not like Katy's biggest achievements nor her worst work, it feels like nothing.
Honestly, 2/10 is better than I was expecting. Hope Katy Perry gets back on track and reflects on what made this album a failure. From the uninspired songwriting to joining up with very(very!) questionable producers. This is all just too sad & disappointing for someone who used to have so much popularity.
As someone who composes music, creating happy and uplifting songs that don't come off as cheesy or childish is quite a difficult task, unlike melancholic songs that flow when we're sad and are naturally taken more seriously. I'm saying this because Katy Perry's 'brand' has always been that of the uplifting artist, the one whose songs motivate you-radio hits that appeal to everyone from kids to older adults. She marked my teenage years with viral songs like 'California Gurls' and 'Firework,' and it's sad to see her creative process decline. ❌ It's even more disappointing when we look back and see that the 'Witness' and 'Smile' eras, despite being controversial, delivered quality in some tracks. Some people say she has been facing a boycott since the 'Witness' era due to her political stances, and I don’t doubt it - the music industry has a poor track record of relationships between producers, managers and artists. I read in a comment above that her career is starting to resemble the mess that is Jennifer Lopez’s music career. I agree, but I think it’s even worse because J.Lo has the advantage of her 'mi gente' Latino background- being a girl from the Bronx who is deeply connected to her Latin roots (or at least tries to be)-and she has never focused on producing high-quality music. In conclusion, while I feel sad about it, I don’t sympathize. She has a lot of money and had plenty of time to deliver the best pop dance album of 2024. She has far more resources than the girls of the new generation, like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. If she hasn't made a good album, it's because she didn't want to or has accepted that she’s not a great professional in her only occupation. The highlights of the album (for me, but I see that others who listened to it are saying the same thing) are the beat of the song 'Gimme Gimme' and the verse by rapper JID-and rap isn't even in my top three favorite genres. Bad attempt, Katy, and good luck with your next album.
i've been waiting for this lmao, three consecutive flop albums she went from a vibrant chart topping superstar from early to mid 2010s to a struggling charmless self claimed self empowering woman singer
This is EASILY one of the worst pop albums this year. As a long-time Katy fan, I was disappointed with how bland the production was & how cringe some of the lyrics work. Even Harleys in Hawaii alone from Smile is better than 143. If I had to pick a decent song, it was the JID song. Strong 2/Light 3 for me.
I'd argue early PC Music scene ie: Sophie, GFOTY etc. in tandem deconstructed club, and neoperreo set this wave off, as alternative pop now is just the underground from the mid-2010s as the queer to white woman ally pipeline continues. But ya Carly Rae Jepson is based, Id say her and Rebecca Black were more a swan song for the era of that sound.
I read a tweet that said Katy was purposefully making the worst album of 2024 to make Dr Luke a critical and commercial failure…let’s assume that’s the truth!
I genuinely think a 2 is too high. Like nothing feels like she means anything or cares about anything. The tracks are so boring, which is wild cause even I love people like Ava Max. Shes making an almost pro women type album with an abuser as a lead producer. I give this album a 0 with the only pos8tive being Jid
I heard Woman's World on the radio at work a grand total of one time ever since it was released, and no other singles, and we listen to mainstream stations with like 60 songs on a playlist that each play at least once to twice a day. I think it's time for her to start flipping burgers bro
That's like saying she has her own guitar hero songpack (of an era) or just dance game (surely? lol there are so many of them) point being saturation to boomer daytime TV watchers isn't relevancy, judge panel talent shows haven't been relevant for at least a decade (last semi-relevant one was masked singer but that's cause it was a jump the shark moment for the genre of show).
Let’s just keep it real. Taking away that she worked with Dr. Fluke, this album just doesn’t sound good. Woman’s World sounds like an even cringier Stupid Love, Lifetimes sounds like it was made in 5 minutes, and most of these songs have very basic writing to them. Truth was the only song I liked. Why couldn’t she have worked with Zedd or even Kravinsky if she wanted to go full electronic pop?
MAYBE‼️she made this album at P. Diddit's house and so she was just heavily drugged the whole time. Thought one thing was going on but it turned out to be another.
This is nor a positive or negative take: I'm just saying, for all the empty EDM cliche tracks I've been avoiding for the last 10 years, Katy and 143 are good at compiling them all and elevating them to "album/project" worth revising.
She should just be planning on rehashing and at least try to redeem herself for her next record which she says she's working on cos this has literally besmirched her career and legacy tbh. She wasn't the greatest musician but she wasn't this uninspiring. Hope she tones it down for her next work and picks up her guitar
whoever is in charge of this album should've re-think some of the lyrics and added an electric guitar to add some flare because some songs actually have a good production.
