Nice review, and again very pleasant outdoor set....On the whiskies, having only tried this Yushan once in a show I enjoyed it, but I agree with you feel more like seasoned sherry than second fill or first fill sherry...so pleasant but nowhere near the sherry monster that this gorgeous Kavalan is...(I'm a big fan especially of this expression), so keep up the good work ! 1. Neither of these are beyond 10 years (if no more than 5). The climate in Taiwan speeds up the aging process. 2. It’s not quite correct to say the Kavalan sherry changed the name to Oloroso. Kavalan now has SEVERAL different types of sherry casks; Fino, Oloroso, Manzanilla, Amontillado. I’m no sherry expert, but apparently, these are different types of Spanish sherry. 3. Vinho Barrique is a type of Portuguese fortified wine. Your ability to nose and taste different notes is amazing. What’s even more amazing is your ability to find similarities among different whiskeys based on nose and taste.
Hi Jack W thanks very much! Big compliment. Some thoughts on your comments: 1. Yes, much faster extraction of wood/precious content and faster filtering by the char. I’d say there is a slow change that occurs over a decade or two though that tropical climate matured whiskies generally don’t reach. I hope I can try the Amrut greedy angels one day, which I am sure will have the changes I am talking about. I have an almost 10 year old Sherry Solist(before the name change to Oloroso Sherry Solist) which is quite old tasting! 2. I’m just referring to the label change of Sherry Solist -> Oloroso Sherry Solist and Sherry Oak -> Oloroso Sherry Oak which happened a couple years ago. 3. Vinho Barrique - Barrique is a type of cask - yes this used to be ex Sherry wine casks with an STR finish. Now they use California wine barrels I believe but please ask the distillery! Nice comparison, Mark. Where do you get the wee samples? The only sherry kavalan I've tried is a solist version exclusive for the Casa Fuente at Caesars in Vegas. It was so rich and maple syrupy with no bitterness. Stood up to the cigar. Are you a cigar guy? Hope the weather in MB is more pleasant than in ON. Cold, windy, and actually snowing here. Thanks Mark! The minis are readily available in Asia - this one came from a friend before I left. This is a vatted multi cask version at 46 percent and about $100 less than the Solist. Negating strength, you’d have to have 3 or more solists to find one that really eclipses this one. I bet it paired nicely with a good stick! I am but not till the weather improves - we had the snow last week. Finally looking like a nice day... Cheers my friend🥃🥃🥃🥃
With these drams we're talking Unobtainium around here... I can get some Kavalans if I fork over big bucks but I'm reluctant, and I don't ever see any Yushan...
