As always thank you Phil, great video, great information very well presented. My favorite so far are the GlenAllachie 10yo and the A’bunadh. I’ll will be looking forward to finding the other choices, especially the Tamdhu one. Cheers from Montreal.

I agree with you on how good Cardrona Growing Wings is! I was in New Zealand for work earlier this year and tried it at a bar in Auckland and was blown away by it. Was able to get my hands on a bottle, but mine is the Growing Wings 5yr Cask Strength Olorosso Sherry & Bourbon 65.5% edition. I will be opening it soon and going to do some blinds with it for my whiskey nights to see how it stacks up.

Great to see Arran's The Bodega Sherry Cask make the list. Agreed not as heavily sherried as the others but the balance is so good, it's just a fantastic scotch with the right amount of sherry. A very heavy sherry bomb but from an IB is the 13 year Strathmill CS from Signatory!! Outta this world!

My favorite Sherry Bomb whisky is the Aberlour A'bunadh, but I've actually been grabbing my bottle of Tamdhu Batch 5 a lot lately. My newest sherry-bomb favorite is the Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2021. The Kavalan Solist expressions haven't wowed me for the price. I've only tried their Port and Ex-Bourbon casks, but I'm not shelling out the cash for their Sherry version at this point. Another great video, Phil. Cheers!

@FirstPhilWhisky Год назад
Thanks, Kevin! Yeah, I haven't loved the Kavalan whiskies - especially at the price point they are asking. Big fan of Tamdhu Batch 5. Loch Gorm is also an excellent choice; they know how to blend the sherry and smoky notes without either flavour dominating.

Very nice Video. I like sherry whiskies. I just had a dram of an independent bottler that would be on the fare right top corner of your diagram. It’s the most heavily sherried that I had so fare. It’s the “Blossoming Auld Sherried Michel Couvreur”. It’s not my favorite, but it’s so special… A really interesting Dram. One of my favourite wherry whisky is :”Blair Athol 2006 14 Year Old Adelphi RAF Benevolent Fund” (alredy my second bottle 😛). I agree that the Arran Sherry Cask and Aberlour A`bunadh are solid whiskies.

Cooper's Choice - Smoking Sherry (Caol Ila), is a really interesting one, although limited in numbers of bottles so maybe hard to get. Very hot, very smokey, you will think of smoke and fire. I add water to cool it off and then I can taste the sherry flavor we're used to: raisins, figs, fruits, some chocolate, etc. Very rich and oily.

Loch Gorum is one of my very favorite single malts and it is impressive that Kilchoman as a young distillery is putting out product to rival Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Great video, Phil. I have yet to get my hands on the Tamdhu but I'll keep trying to get it. I'm sure I will like it.
@DayKlight
@DayKlight Год назад
for me to be honest, to rival ardbeg atm is not really a challange since their newer cask managment of selling the standing in the corner casks that dont hit the quality mark, (but then want the same or more money as before) is a sad choice.

The Glenfarclas Family Cask line has some amazing sherry bombs. Glendronach Cask Strength line is good too. Sherry bombs are nice but imo the best drinking, most quaffable drams are from refill, 3rd fill, and 4th fill sherry casks. 4th fills are exceedingly rare but they’re just divine.

for sure, Ledaig10 to the left, close to Caol ila12, and Talisker10 to the right, instead of Ledaig10. Also Lag16 is more peated vs Ledaig10-Caol ila12. Blacklable is nearly zero peated, just a little.

Edradour 12 CS is excellent sherry bomb but it has a distinctive “dirty” character so it may not please some of the public. It has that weird machine oil notes mixed with heavily cooked plums made into a jam. One of the best whiskies I ever had, I regret not getting a second bottle as it’s completely sold out atm. If anyone come across a bottle - do not hesitate, it’s a treasure. edit: I’m referring to the one bottled in ibisco decanter, it was single cask as well.

if you can try the edradour, imagine the caledonia, but more sirupy texture more oily, intenser flavours but still tasting a malt note, how you still have a great matly note in a such heavy intense sherry buffles me, amazing whisky, cant say much about their batch variation, the one I got is amazing. To me personally, Edradour and Kavalan play in a different sherry league then aaalot of other distilleries/bottles.

Pretty interesting list. Love the Tamdhu, The A’bunadh and the 105. Also love Uigidel, Loch Gorm but then peat is way more my thing than sherry. The Arran was forgettable, Kavalan unforgettable but not necessarily in a great way and Kilkerran 8 was fine but not special. I’d like to try the Ebradour since it’s mentioned a lot. Love the diagram, very much disagree with the guy who thinks it’s incorrect.

Kavalan makes some fantastic whisky in general, but their sherry cask whiskies are especially great. In ascending order of pricing: Triple Sherry Cask, Oloroso Sherry, Solist Oloroso Single Cask Strength, Solist Amontillado Single Cask Strength, Solist Manzanilla Single Cask Strength, Solist PX Single Cask Strength, & Solist Moscatel Single Cask Strength. I hear prices are pretty crazy around the world for many of these, but here in Taiwan they're quite affordable. For the quality level, the Triple Sherry & basic Oloroso Sherry are pretty inexpensive everywhere. My favorite is the Solist Oloroso Single Cask Strength. All are pretty huge sherry bombs.

My favorite is Macallan 18, distilled in 1972, bottled in 1990. The old Macallan bottlings are the quintessential Sherry Bombs. One could argue that Macallan led the Sherry Bomb wave from back in the 80’s & 90’s. Today, Macallan has gotten full of itself. Their casks aren’t what they were back in the 20th century. And the price points today are simply obscene. I was surprised that no mention of Macallan appeared in the video review or in the threads I’ve seen. In the mid-1980s there was no equal to this venerable old Speyside Distillery.

Even tho it's not a cask strength, you won't be disappointed. Not a big fan of Oloroso sherry, so 105, Glendronach batch 9, Tomatin Sherry CS didn't do much for me. I cant see my favourite Glen Scotia Sherry Double Cask Finish LE... But Tamdhu (may be) a little bit better, I agree! ;)

Just bought the Tamdhu 12 (discounted to $80 AUD) on your recommendation (we’ll kinda) and it’s sooo good man. Thanks for the tip! Next is the Aberlour A’bunadh!!! ( a little more expensive atm though @ $155)

My favorite sherry bomb(s). Kilkerran 8 Cask strength, Glengoyne Tea Pot Dram, and kind of cheating because it's not an official release but the Adelphi Ben Nevis 5 yo (this might be #1). Phil I'll be visiting family in NZ later this year, Auckland to Wellington and then to Queenstown. Any whisky destinations you'd recommend? Was thinking Cardrona while in Queenstown? Thanks in advance!!!

I wish I could get Kilkerren 8 here in NZ.😢. Fantastic. There isn't a lot. Cardrona is probably the best as destination. Waiheke whisky is great, but the distillery is still in the works. But you can try their whisky at the Heke on Waiheke island. It's a beautiful island with many vineyards too - if you're into wine.

Glen Garioch 15 was and always has been the no 1 sherry cask strength. I can't understand how it's not in here. :)

Hey Hannes, that’s a great bottle. Can be hard to find though for some.

I was recommended it, and bought two, but I must say that it is extremely new-makey, almost tequilaish....;- /

Edradour Caledonia! probably the most Taste-per-£ I've had in my mouth for a long time. By far. If you haven't tasted yet you simply have to.
