Great review. Im glad you got a good cask bc the one I had basically was a cask strength port that was extremely sweet. If I never had this before and you blindfolded me I would swear this was a super strong port. This will be on the shelf a long time...............

Nice. There are a few of the Port Solist sitting nearby me $200. I tried reaching out to Larry awhile back but no response. These Kavafan bottlings sound amazing.
Great review. I’m a sucker for a Port finished single malt so I bet I’d love this Kavalan. I like the concertmaster port finish a lot but have never pulled the trigger on the Port Solist bc its a bit pricey. Maybe I’ll have to spoil myself someday
Whisky In The 6 I was afraid you’d say that. 😂. Probably a good thing I can’t get this special version. It’s hard enough resisting the temptation of the regular port Solist.
HI Rob, I almost got a port solist at changi airport (best prices ever seen) but the cashier told me the bottle would be taken away in my arrival to Japan. This will be my next kavalan for sure! Cheers!
If you can get a hold of it at Changi, go for it. They don‘t have Kavalan all the time. First time I was there, they had the entire range in stock. Only three months later, no Kavalan at all. So you‘ve got to be lucky. Bought a Solist Sherry for less than 90 USD
W6, I have the Kavalan sherry oak and its good, but I paid about $100 or less. It seems like the average bottle cost is about $100 and several Solist bottles are in the $500 range or higher. We have several bottles in our store and they don't sell. I personally think their overpriced. Great review.
Enjoy the channel. Picked up a Soloist Port at craft cellars. Poured a dram. Balsamic note, sweet and thick, and little else. Maybe a poor cask. Did you find the Kavalan bottles opened up once cracked?
Sad that I missed out on both the Solist Port and the Sherried for Canada. 1 minute they were there and the next they were gone. Hopefully the next wave I will grab 1.
I had the Sherried for Canada Solist and it didn't blow me away. It was available here for about a year. I have a Concert Master and it's OK, but when it comes to Port finish, I think I prefer the Quinta Ruban.
Thanks for the heads up Quig. Looks like I saved $180 plus shipping on the Sherried for Canada I don't buy Glenmorangie in Ontario as it seems the prices are about 50% higher here for them than say Nova Scotia or Alberta.
Wine casks are pretty much never charred, they're more towards medium toasted. Some do "rechar" the barrels however but this is a gamble as recharring can give a lot of rubber notes to the whisky.
I feel spoiled after reading the comments. I drink this as well as the other solists all the time because it's readily available where I live in Taiwan and reasonably priced. About the cask consistency, it varies a lot. I'm drinking a ~10 year oloroso sherry now that, despite passing neck pour and sitting 3 months, still taste strongly of raisin and prune. Very little opening up with water - it's that prevalent. However, I've had some wonderfully balanced and complex Kavalan oloroso solists; same with the other solists- it's hit or so so. Check cask number or have someone select it for you as KavaFan does.
Just re-reviewing your impressions on the Kavalan Solist Port to the Amrut Portonova before their all gone off the shelves. This is my second Kavalan just opened tonight in preparation for my B day this weekend and the Portonova has been open since 12-15-2020 and has opened up into one of the most amazing whiskies I have experienced to date. I though I needed to compare the two ( even though open dates are way off) so I can get a couple more before their all gone. I see you have dome reviews on both Rob. How do you compare the two side by side............Cheers!

vincent de rover so I will say that port in this video is much better than all the others. The Fino is just ok for me. Not the biggest fan. It is important to note that these are all Single Barrel so they vary greatly. i would take this Port over all of them but they aren’t around anymore.
I bought 2 of the Port from Larry. First bottle I loved so much i regret not buying more than 2 of them. The second bottle I opened up (while I still had some left from the first one), was quite a disappointment. It smelled little mould and was not the same experience as the first one. Even if the numbers were 126 and 127. It was like a totally different cask. If I can buy better kavallen whisky from food supermarkets then something doesn't feel right. I guessed something was wrong with the bottle so I returned it to Kavalan distillery 2 weeks ago and they are going to check if something was wrong with it.
I had both side by side comparison and my friends who also tried both said the same about it. By the way, I got message yesterday from Kavalan in Taiwanese. The people in the test report of my returned bottle said it was "not a significant difference" which made me quite surprised. I feel it is a significant difference. Then Kavalans range must be quite high for acceptance?
i only had samples but if i remember correctly i even liked the port solist better than the vinho barrique. definitely good stuff! yet, i am not sure their price tag is justified. they cover their youth well... but its still there, imo.
What’s the difference between this and the greeb label kavalan solist port cask? They’re both around the same age and proof but the green is cheaper. Thanks!
