I've got a 2008 that has about 50k that is 2up 95% of the time. Love it, as fulltime RV'ers it has been ridden in around 30 States and Baja, one of the best all around bikes ever built.

Thanks for the great very fair review. The KLR is the "sit down adventure bike". I love my 2022. It's the perfect bike when you are out riding and think "I wonder where that dirt road goes?".

Thanks for reviewing the mule Jimmy. Kinda like an old man that doesn't move very well anymore but appreciates being mentioned every once in a while.

I bought the 2023 KLR 650S version. I'm short and old. I bought much beefier crash bars, footpegs, USB power, Tusk aluminum panniers, socket for my heated jacket, phone mount all for less than the adventure model. I really like my bike.

KLR was my first bike. It’s a great bike to inform where you go next - either bigger premium ADV, or down to a dirtbike.

Their really isnt any other bike in its category. Love what Kawi is doing lately, with the KLR and KLX. Motors and chassis are great, just update enough to modernize it and keep the price low still. That also keeps the decades of aftermarket parts relevant to make it suite your needs.

Rode mine 5000 miles on two rides. Once rode from Cedar City, Utah to Butte, Montana in one day. Weighs 500 pounds so at 76 years old I wont ride it on dirt trails.

Kudos for a well-presented review of the KLR for what it is vs one that harps on what it’s not……..

If only Honda could have done this to the XR650R, back in the day....
@DirtBikeTest

You know I agree. The XR650L could have been so much better with the 650R platform. I still have a 650R (with an accessory electric start!)

Good realistic review, keeping it real reviewing it in context of the bikes design and typical owners philosophy of use

Right on Jimmy!! You can ride just about anything. And a shameless plug to recommend your riding class. I am practicing slow speed and braking drills I learned in your class EVERYTIME I swing a leg over my bikes!! I am so happy you showed my shortcomings and gave me tools to improve as a rider so I can get better. Thank you Sir!!

Going on 4 months waiting on parts for the new 1290. They simply are not available and nobody has any idea when they will be. I honestly thought about running out and grabbing a KLR to have another ADV bike to ride while I wait (I owned a 2014 1/2 before). I will probably grab a Tuareg instead to tide me over while I wait (it was the only bike I could think of that would have even worse parts availability).

This is not as uncommon as you might think, especially for those that can leave the ego at the door... or the start of the dirt road.

@@williamb.6918 The wait is a real struggle still waiting on parts for a royal enfield himalayan such a rare bike in our area & dealer support is almost non existent but got a KLR so I'm sure the RE will be on back burner
@williamb.6918
@williamb.6918 Год назад
@@franmitch3589 I got tired of waiting and went out and bought the Tuareg 660. Ironically there are a few enthusiast dealerships that stock fairly deep for those bikes. I was shocked to find someone who snapped their rally tower was actually able to find a dealer with parts on hand.

I thought you review of the KLR was very fair. I've had one for many years, have done a bunch of adventures with it, and I do have to remind myself to not ride it like a smaller dirtbike. The bike is better than the sum of its parts and has a very willing personality. Do a few things to sharpen the feeling you get back from the bike (tires, fork brace, pegs, smaller front fender to catch less air), respect its weight, and it will take you anywhere you want to go.

Find video! The Kawai PIG 650 will get the job done but like you said take it slow and just enjoy the journey What is some of the talk about how the windscreen doesn’t do a good job ? Also what’s the talk about the Doohickey ? does that applied to the new model as well ? Thx

The more I throw into this bike (2023) the more it just takes it. I have never had less buyers remorse in anything else. If you are thinking of buying a 3rd Gen KLR stop thinking, drive to the dealer & make the next step....buy one.
@tylermtpleasant9177

Now does the KLR’s still require the Doohickey installed ? I owned a 98 and loved mine.

What did I expect from the love child of a tank and a tractor? Just what I got...and wanted. They say it will suck on the BDRs, but we’ll find out, I guess. Loving it so far, despite its “limitations”.

Does the fuel injection increase the mileage any?
@DirtBikeTest
@DirtBikeTest Год назад
I can not give an accurate answer to this since I did not have an accurate mileage from the previous version to compare it against. Additionally, I was riding in very high-speed roads for most of my time with the bike and this is where the smaller ADV bikes suffer since they are really wide-open. I was getting the bike down to +/- 30 MPG when it can easily get 50+ when not hammering the throttle. I do believe it would be much more efficient at slower speeds especially if the throttle response is any indication.
@jameshuggins4300
@jameshuggins4300 Год назад
@Dirt Bike Test thanks for the reply. I have an older version I used to get 50+ until I put hard cases and it dropped to the low 40s
