One of our members, Kay Garner, discusses her story and how cavernoma have impacted her and her life. Kay has a spinal cord cavernoma at T2, which caused C7 complete paralysis when she was 26.
A cavernoma is made up of abnormal blood vessels and can be found in the brain and/or spinal cord and looks like a raspberry.
1 person in 600, in the UK, has a brain cavernoma without symptoms (asymptomatic). This equates to roughly 90,000 people - enough to fill Wembley Stadium. A spinal cavernoma is rarer than a brain cavernoma.

Thank you Kay for sharing your story. It's amazing how positive you've remained. My sister and I both have cavernomas and my spinal one was removed last year. For our rare condition it's nice to hear other people's journeys.

Hi. I was very interested to hear your story. I had a bleed between T3 and T4 and they discovered it was caused by a cavernoma. The bleed caused me to have a very weak left leg and pins and needles in my right leg, also known as Brown Sequard Syndrome. My strength has returned somewhat in my left leg after several months. They are planning to remove the cavernoma to avoid a bleed in the future, which could paralyze me. I commend you for the strength you have shown. keep the spirits up.

It’d be lovely to hear how Kay is doing now. Did she go back to college?
