Kayak Fishing for squid in Port Phillip Bay Melbourne Australia on a Hobie Pro Angler 14 Kayak. I demonstrate a few simple squid fishing tips and then catch some big calamari. There is no better way to chase a feed of calamari then fishing from a hobie kayak squid fishing. It’s a fun and rewarding form of squid fishing melbourne.
Make sure you watch until the end as things start a little slow but then a small window of chaos catching upgrade after upgrade with the last squid having a 41cm hood. I do get a little excited in this one. If you enjoy the video, then please subscribe to the channel. Glad to help, funny enough I reckon that's the 5th or 6th time Ive rescued someone in the last 12 months. Us fellow kayakers need to look after each other out there, things can go wrong pretty quickly. Last year i rescued someone, there must of been 20 people closer to the person then me and not one of them went over to lend a hand. Very sad at times. Was great to meet you guys, hope to see you out there again soon.

Thanks, 100% agree. I'm glad you had some help when you went overboard. I'm amazed that on a few occasions i've seen someone tip over and others in the immediate are not bother to help. It can be a real challenge to tip your kayak back over and get back on it. Can be exhausting and scary when there is no help around. I was hoping to help send a positive message out there. I'm often fishing solo and would help others would help me if i needed it. Thanks heaps for your comment !!

Thanks for the positive comments. Yeah lately have been fishing mainly campbells cove, werribee and altona way. Plenty of squid, pinkies and flathead in that whole area. 99% of the filming is done by myself often have to use the camera in selfie mode to make sure im in the frame and that its straight etc. Its one of the major downsides. however I have a new GoPro 8 on order and this has a new camera mod that allows you to see what your filming without selfie mode so that will be another big improvement to the channel very soon.

@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
Thanks for the positive comments Alastair. Its a really good question you have. I have worn a handful of traditional non inflated PFD's but I always find them so uncomfortable whther on the boat or kayak. Even some of the quite expensive ones. I have resorted to just using an inflatable PFD but I don't think its anywhere near as safe and is a little concerning. I guess I'm lucky with the hobie as it has so much available storage so i prob don't need that with a PFD. Its something I'm very keenly looking into a good quality one thats non inflatable but light and comfortable. I actually spent some time looking around BCF and online earlier today but didn't find anything. ill keep researching and let you know what i find. Have you come across anything worth checking out ?

another great vid Alan. Nice squid. What brand were the red and gold jigs. Amateur question. Is a UV jig transparent/opaque ?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
Hi Tony, The jigs used was Rui squid jig in the hulk colour. They are fantastic and only $10 delivered, Rui has a good store on eBay. the other was an Asari egiKing which cost $13 from hooked on bait and tackle. UV is something they add to the cloth which makes it stand out when its in the water. Been around for a few years I find the UV foils seem to work better then rattles and other stuff. I hope that helps, let me know if i can assist with anything else. Cheers

What water depth do they like to hang out in? And do you have any tips to stop getting the jig snagged in sea weed. I've been out 4 times now and caught nothing. Is that normal?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
I usually find them between 2 and 5 meters. You can catch them deeper but typiclly im looking for weedy areas with that depth. Easiest way to try and unsnag or jig is to go past where you have snaged up and try and yank it out from the other side even if you have to move the boat or kayak. The last 1 month the water temperature has dropped 2 degrees so fishing for most species including squid has been really challenging. what are have you been fishing ?

The easy answer is that's what happens when you buy cheap and unstable kayaks. You very rarely see guys capsize when there using a stable kayak. Many of the retail outlets here sell cheap kayaks that a very unstable and they sell many of them. I did the same the first time I bought a kayak. I now have a hobie PA its so very stable. That particular area also has quite a bit of boat and jet ski traffic it was a boat passing by the got him of guard.
