+lojo.fishing glad to hear it! I love the challenge and excitement that comes from exploring new water or trying to figure out a new species. It’s not always easy (like this first day), but even the “lame” catches become exciting! Throw a dart at a map of your county or state and just go fish somewhere new. Might surprise ya.
this is what keeps me mentally stable during the work week entill i go fishing 1 day during the weekend so thank u for such amazing n inspering content
Very interesting video. You would probably catch the heck out of those Bonito fish with a fly rod and a Clouser minnow or needle fish fly. You have a great sporting attitude that is fun and pleasurable. I’m a mainly catch and release kind of guy. I prefer a fly rod but will fish with anything. This fall I’m figuring out catching steelhead on worms in the Rogue River. Keep up the great work. To infinity and beyond forever, Tom Purtzer
From Liverpool myself. Fishing is pants here compared to the US. Watching your vids has made me have ago myself, hopefully I could be the Robert Field of the UK (probably not!). Anyway here's a video I made it's hardly citizen Kane. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GqkKNwWNmwE.html . Gaz
Your videography keeps getting better. Hooked sea lions twice at La Jolla. They would see a kayak and follow you around all day poaching your mackerel. One ate 8 of mine and just when a school of yellowtail popped up got lip hooked. 300lb bull going eye to eye six feet from the yak. Broke it off and missed the yellowtail. The other one got hooked Deep and pulled me so fast on buttoned down 30 my buddy lost me. Hooked Deep and painful. Finally got all but 50’ of line back and cut it. Bonito are good to eat if you bleed them right away and keep them cool. Marinade helps. You can also eat the raw as Sushi with Teriyaki sauce and Wasabi.
+Erik Lun I have multiple videos out of Corpus bro, just older stuff. I’ve fished there about 40 times. That’d be more like going home than going on a trip haha
A sea lion?!?!? That’s insane dude. Me and my father in law watches a heroin get a top water bass lure on a guys line one time he had a hell of a time. I used the YAKFISH code for my fist MTB subscription my first box cost me less than $5. Thanks. Episode 2 you’re next on my list!
Very welcome man can't wait to do some yaking don't think I'll reach the big water but you never know ,,learning alot from you so hope to try next year hit the lake after the pond and try for the bigger fish ,,,say it again you ocean yak fishermen are second to none man 👍🎣
3 way swivel for halibut, keeps your bait always in the strike zone. 8-12inch. line to the weight and 2-3ft leader. 80% of the time, it works every time lol. i used to use carolina but it just doesnt work nearly as well for the butts.
Robert Field that’s where I got mine, will try for more when up there next year working on my cabin. Rock fish, halibut, and salmon... best fish for eating and can all be had in the same place at the same time... all while soaking the crab pots...
Sea lion hook should rust out pretty quickly in salt water environment, right? Enjoying your Field Trips, each one looks like fishing trip of a lifetime.Glad you're sharing your experiences, thanks
Yeah, it should rust out, and they're also smart and flexible enough to use their flippers to try and work it out, too. I think he'll be just fine, just a painful week or two for him. Sucks, but not sure what I could've done. Glad you're enjoying the videos, Troy. Thanks for watching!
What drone you using for the overhead stuff. It seemed pretty loud, curious if its something the go pro audio enhances or just loud props. I'm practicing with a mavic pro and find its video in 4K is pretty awesome. Again your video does not disappoint. Fish Village was just added to my list. Probably a bit cheaper to hit before a guy heads to Panama.
+Denver Deschenes that was the Mavic. All drones are pretty loud. In that one scene with Mike and his Calico it was flying right above us, so my DSLR picked up the audio big time. Fish Village puts together some awesome trips!
Don’t worry Robert the hook will rust and eventually come out it happens to us at one stage with animals in the fisheries so yeah don’t feel bad for it because it happens
+preston jimenez yeah the PA would be a pain to get in and out of the boat. The Outback performed great out there. You may be able to borrow one from Pure WTersports
Not bad for a first day. How did you like your fight with that sealion. Thats was an epic battle, Lol. Nice to see your videos. Keep them coming. I'm sure the bite will pick up. This Thanksgiving weekend is going to be nice, for our type of fishing. Stay safe on the water.
on your red conventional rig I noticed the guides on that pole past the first two base guides appear to be turned 45 degrees as if it was a two piece rod connected together with the end half turned 45 degrees to your right.doesnt this put abnormal stress to the pole and also possibly on the line? just curious.
Do you use your lifejacket from NRS in L/XL or XL/XXL? I bought me the L/XL and they are just for persons up to 75KG (165LBS). PS: Which Lowrance do you use?
+hans peter that’s not true I don’t think. The Chinook life jacket is rated for higher than that. And the sizes don’t change the flotation, just the strap lengths. So the L/XL and XL/XXL have the same exact flotation. I wear the L/XL. I use the Lowrance Elite 7
The Pacific Bonita or Bonito if you will. They are not separate species, just separate pronunciations. lol I was hooked on kelp bed fishing for the Calico Bass. I had a 12' zodiac inflatable with a 15 HP outboard. I fished the kelp quite a bit and have caught some very nice ones. I often caught Sand Bass and Spotted Bay Bass and they were all related to each other in the taxonomic charts. Fishing for Calico Bass was a big pastime of myself and my young bride. She loved fishing and hunting. Hard to find a girlfriend nowadays who likes those things.
+Drew Speight I ALMOST had a chance this past weekend in Louisiana, I was with the Jackson guys but we didn’t get to take it out before I left. Not sure when I’ll be able to.
Robert, love your videos! I need to buy one Trout rod and reel for small to medium fast water river fishing using spinning lures and spoons. The trout I catch are 15" to 21". What rod and reel and fishing line do you advise me to buy? I am grateful for your videos.
Good video man. Looks like a blast. You know if they would accommodate a pro angler for that trip? Can you post what that company was for the lures you got. Try g to get some new things for calico.
Great videos Rob. We get Bonito in Australia also but we call the other one that looks like this fish but more tuna. We call it a Mac Tuna here. Great fun but crap eating. PS You should come to aus.
I’d love to come to Aus, but I don’t make enough money to just galavant around the world wherever I want unfortunately. When an opportunity presents itself, I’ll jump on it for sure
Fuck dude I love ur vids I watch every single one u post I wish I could be just like u man , you are living my dream I just acquired a used hobie 2011 I think and I'm trying to get there man hope u come back to Texas so maybe we could meet up haha every time I watch ur vids it makes me want to go out even more and I can't wait till the weekend haha good luck bud
+CBHOOKUP thanks for the kind words bro! I didn’t start doing this stuff til about 5 years ago, so I’m still an amateur. If I can do it, you can. Just takes a little passion and a lot of hard work. You’re welcome to join me when I get back to Texas, probably not til next fall though
All u need is a go pro, make sure if I only have one it’s a head Cam set up. Also don’t add music when your realing in a fish most people want to hear the drag.
Thanks Justin, and welcome! There’s bonitO that I catch in this video, they don’t get too big. I’ve caught bonitA over in Florida that do get upwards of 30-40 pounds. Similar species and both very fun fights
Great job again Robert, I thought you were going to be on the second islander trip, I was on the second trip and we did pretty well with yellowtails and tons of calico, sheepheads. If everything goes as plan I will be joining Michael ponce in panama next summer, can’t wait
Should be free that spot doesn’t seem to productive and the target fish aren’t anything u can’t catch 1-2 miles off shore. 3 days 750 is a great price I just wouldn’t pay that to get those types of fish.
marcus larwa I agree. I used to live in Santa Barbara county and frequently caught bigger than usual halibut, white sea bass, calicos, sand bass, bat rays, shovelnose and leopard sharks, cabazon, ling cod, yellowtail etc, without spending anything but gas money. All you need is a two-man inflatable with a small motor and a handfull of lead headed jigs. In fact, I've even had nearly as good results from shore.
